Schoening mentioned he was experiencing some chest pains stemmed from the Mavs game last Sunday and is under observation.

Bill said he had a little hear arrythmia probably due from him getting hit in the carotid artery in the neck or throat. They did a procedure on him and are going to continue to watch it for a few days. I hope he gets well soon. Poor guy

Here's the press release:

SAN ANTONIO – Earlier today Fabricio Oberto felt abnormal sensations in his chest. After seeing a cardiologist it was determined to be a heart arrhythmia which is believed to have been caused by minor trauma to the chest (which occurred in the Spurs-Mavericks game on Sunday).

This evening Oberto underwent a procedure which restored his heart to its normal rhythm. He is in stable condition and returned home after the procedure.

His condition will be monitored for the next few days. Barring unforeseen complications, Oberto will be cleared to play in Game 1 of the Spurs-Nuggets playoff series.

Oberto arrhythmia (http://www.realgm.com/src_wiretap_archives/45708/20070418/oberto_has_heart_arrhythmia/)

Sounds like they got the electrophysiologist in there to shock his heart.

Outside Duncan, Oberto is probably the bigman I trust the most going into the playoffs. Elson has had an up and down season and had perhaps the worst playoffs of any player in any season in NBA history last year. Horry is playoff proven, but hasn't shot well enough. Bonner doesn't play enough defense. Butler and Ely don't have enough minutes as Spurs to put them on the floor in the playoffs.

Oberto knows how to win big must-win games and his peaks this season (for example, game versus PHX) were higher than any other bigman.

Get well soon. The Spurs will need him.

timvp
04-18-2007, 10:44 PM
The procedure sounds similar to the one LaMarcus Aldridge underwent. Aldridge was cleared for basketball contact with a day or two, but the Blazers held him out for the rest of the season.

Aldredge had/has Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome, a potential very serious condition where there are aberrant conduction fibers. Chances are he had ablation of those fibers and that will put you out for a while.

Oberto doesn't have that. More likely he had some atrial arrythmia, may have had cardioversion (shock) to restore the normal heart beat.

Supposedly he was good to go in a couple days. If they were in playoff contention, they say he would have missed one game at most.

Hopefully Oberto can get back on the practice court by Friday because the Spurs are going to need him.

San Antonio Spurs center Fabricio Oberto on Wednesday underwent a procedure that returned his heart to a normal rhythm after feeling abnormal sensations in his chest, the team announced.

He is in stable condition and was able to return home after the procedure. The Spurs expect him to be available in Game One of the team's first-round playoff series vs. Denver this weekend. "He had a procedure (Wednesday) and went home. We're going to check his heart rate and rhythm for the next couple of days," San Antonio coach Gregg Popovich said. "If everything stays under control, it looks good that he might be able to practice on Saturday."

Was there any indication what contact caused the problem? I hope it wasn't that play where JHo jumped into him on the screen and drew the foul.

Dont worry, he might be cleared to play in the playoffs. Hooray for Oberto!!!i don't really think Oberto will be available soon enough to play in the 1st round, IMO-based on the "procedure" he went through. I don't know but, this is a heart problem we're talking about.

But there's Butler and he showed us i the last couple of games he can help this team if Oberto's not ready yet.

my sentiments exactly. Denver is a tuff place to play for ppl who DONT have any problems. so if he plays i doubt it will be too many mins.... but i think the smart thing to do is save him for round 2.
