For the last 3 years, League Pass covers only the regular season.

There's no way the TNT/ESPN playoff broadcast contacts would allow competition from League Pass.

So, basically only the Lakers/Phx series and the Miami/Chicago series are going to be on regular TV? That sucks.

You'd think they'd care more about San Antonio, Detroit, and Dallas, as they are the only teams with a prayer of winning a championship. Oh well.

What to Watch: Fiesta, Spurs cause channel jumping

Express-News

Because of a scheduling conflict with the Fiesta Flambeau parade, both KENS and KMYS will share over-the-air broadcast rights to the Spurs first-round playoffs games in high definition.

Sunday's Game 1 and Wednesday's Game 2 both go to TNT and Fox Sports Net Southwest. Two different teams will call the first two TNT's game: Game 1 will use Kevin Harlin for play-by-play with Doug Collins as analyst and Game 2 will have Matt Devlin call the game with John Thompson handling analyst duties. Dei Lynam will work both games as TNT's sideline reporter.

Fox Sports Net Southwest will use Dave Barnett (play-by-play), Sean Elliott (analyst) and Andrew Monaco (sideline reporter) for all of its broadcasts. Additionally, FSN Southwest will have 30-minute pregame and postgame shows on Spurs' game days regardless of who's broadcasting the game.

Normally, KENS would carry first-, and if they advance, second-round away games. Not only is KENS the "official" station of the Spurs, they're also the "official" station for Fiesta. The Flambeau parade, the largest illuminated night parade in the country, airs at 8 p.m. on April 28 with the Spurs game scheduled for that same night at 7 p.m. To avoid a conflict, area viewers can watch Game 3 over the air on My Network TV affiliate KMYS (channel 35, Time Warner cable 7) with Bill Land, Elliott and KENS' Joe Reinagle acting as sideline reporter. This trio will be the announcing crew for all games on KENS & KMYS.

Sinclair Broadcasting, KMYS' owner, should be excited multiple times over because this will be its first Spurs playoff game. It's also KMYS' first high-definition game – all of the regular season games KMYS had were broadcast in standard definition only, while network programming was broadcast in 720 progressive HD. The home Spurs games on KENS were produced in 1080 interlaced HD, but both stations have worked out the kinks for that broadcast. ESPN will also televise Game 3 to a nationwide audience.

Lastly, Game 3 airs during the May sweeps TV ratings period and Spurs games usually generate the high numbers station owners dream about.

While some Games 4 through 7 national TV partners and times are to be determined, here's some educated guesses to what may happen.

Locally, KENS has the rights to broadcast Game 4 at Denver on April 30 with TNT the likely national partner. That game could start as early at 6 or 7 p.m. or as late as 9 or 9:30 p.m. ( :angel too late already?)

Two other playoff games are scheduled for that Monday night – a Game 4 Eastern Conference matchup with Cleveland at Washington and a potential Game 5 Western Conference showdown with Utah at Houston. If all three games are played, look for the Cleveland-Washington game on NBA TV at 7 p.m. and because Denver and Utah both play in the Mountain time zone, the Spurs or Rockets could fill either time slot.

The determining factor could be how intense both series play out or how much one game may be more "sexy" to air than the other. Experience tells me that Houston-Utah would be the late 9 p.m. game because both teams are in cities that are in larger media markets ranked by Nielsen Media Research (Houston is the No. 10 market and Utah is No. 35; Denver is No. 18 and San Antonio is No. 37). If there is no Houston-Utah Game, expect to stay up late for a 9 p.m. Spurs tipoff.

If necessary, FSNSW and TNT will both televise Game 5 on May 2 from San Antonio. Two other games could happen that night, both Game 5s – Washington at Cleveland and the Los Angeles Lakers at Phoenix. If all three games happen, look for the Wizards-Cavs dumped at an early time slot (6 p.m.-ish) on NBA TV with Spurs-Nuggets at 7 p.m. and Lakers-Suns at 9:30 p.m. as a TNT doubleheader. If only two of these series are still hanging around, the Eastern Conference game would be the 7 p.m. and whatever Western Conference game is left would be a 9:30 p.m. tip. If only one series is still going on, regardless of conference, look for a 7 p.m. start or an 8 p.m. tipoff at the latest.

Game 6 would be on May 4 at Denver with KENS and either ESPN or ESPN2 airing the game. There could be up to four Game 6s on this night including Toronto at New Jersey, Cleveland at Washington and Phoenix at Los Angeles Lakers. The worst-case scenario is the Spurs could land an 8:30 p.m. ESPN2 or a 9:30 p.m. ESPN slot if all the other series go up to a Game 6. If they're the only game going on that night, the game could be a 6:30-7 p.m. start.

Finally, if the series goes to a Game 7, more than likely ABC (more appropriately ESPN on ABC) would take this game for a national 2 p.m. time slot on May 6 if this is the only series still going. There are four series that could end up with Game 7s on this day – they would include the Nuggets at Spurs, the Los Angeles Lakers at Phoenix, Washington at Cleveland and New Jersey at Toronto. The outlook is, if there is only one series left, look for a 2/2:30 p.m. ABC tipoff; if two series are left, expect a ABC doubleheader with noon and 2:30 tipoffs; if three series are left, the two most attractive series would likely go to ABC with a single night game on TNT. If all four series extend to Game 7, expect two games on ABC and two on TNT.

If the Spurs go this far and are not an ESPN on ABC game, FSNSW has permission to telecast the game along with TNT.

Two more scenarios exist: 1, the Spurs could sweep Denver in four games. 2, The Spurs could lose all four games.

Either way the first round concludes, if the series ends after four games and you have read through all the broadcast scenarios presented – to quote Emily Litella, "Never mind."

If you can't get to a TV, there's always radio. All of the Spurs' radio games are on WOAI-AM 1200 with Bill Schoening announcing. A Spanish-language broadcast also is available on KCOR-AM 1350 with Paul Castro announcing. Sirius Satellite Radio will also provide extensive coverage on channel 127 as the NBA's official satellite radio broadcast partner.

Program changes: With Dallas' 1-0 overtime win on Thursday, Game 6 has been added to the Fox Sports Net Southwest schedule for 6 p.m. Saturday. Unfortunately, the Arena Football League game featuring the Dallas Desperados vs. Georgia Force scheduled at live 6 p.m. will now move to a same-day tape-delayed midnight broadcast.

ESPN has added an NBA Eastern Conference playoff game to its Saturday schedule (New Jersey vs. Toronto at 11 a.m.) that bumps the Indy Racing League event from Japan from 11 a.m to 2 p.m. The IRL Firestone IndyCar 300 airs on a same-day tape basis from Twin Ring Motegi, a 1.5 mile oval 60 miles northeast of Tokyo.

The Houston Astros-Philadelphia Phillies game that was rained out on April 15 has been rescheduled. The game is now scheduled for 6 p.m. Monday (April 23) and can be seen locally on KCWX (channel 2, Time Warner Cable channel 4).

The Wednesday to Saturday break should be good to get up to Denver and get a practice in before having to play in the altitude.
I've always wondered how you could possibly calculate the advantage that the altitude gives all Colorado teams, especially by the time the last few minutes of the games roll around.

Season conditioning helps, of course--and a day or two in the rarified air of Denver may ameliorate the immediate effect--but I know that many sports trainers and mountain climbers advocate a long period of acclimation to altitude when strenuous physical activity is planned.

Anyone have any definitive info?
