HUTCHINSON, Kan. - Behind a 1-2 finish from junior Pablo Martin and senior Ryan Posey, Oklahoma State’s men’s golf team claimed its league-leading fifth Big 12 title on Tuesday at Prairie Dunes Golf Club.
The Cowboys entered the day with a five shot lead over Texas A&M and carded a 7-over 287 score during their final round to finish with a 26-over-par 866 tournament total and seven shots clear of the Aggies.

Martin and Posey fueled the Cowboys as each player carded an impressive 2-under 68 in tough scoring conditions to claim the top two spots on the leaderboard.

Joining the duo in the top 10 was senior Tyler Leon, who tied for ninth place.

For Martin, the victory was the fifth of his career and marked the 42nd time an OSU player has claimed medalist honors at the conference tournament. The Malaga, Spain native finished with a 1-over 211 total to finish three shots ahead of Posey and become the fifth Cowboy overall and first since Hunter Mahan in 2003 to be crowned Big 12 champion.

“This is a good feeling. I haven’t won in college in quite a while. I had some good finishes but I haven’t been playing very good in college tournaments,” Martin said. “This week I was able to relax and enjoy this place because it such a beautiful course. And the team wins, so that is the important part.”

Martin entered the final round tied for third and put together a roller coaster round that included seven birdies and five bogeys. Standing at 2-under through seven holes, he closed his outward nine with a pair of bogeys before alternating birdies and bogeys for the first six holes of the back nine. The 2006 national player of the year capped his performance in impressive fashion, making birdie at the par-5 17th and knocking his approach on No. 18 to within a foot to set up another birdie.

For Posey, the runner-up finish marked his best as a collegian and was his second consecutive top-10 finish after tying for sixth place at the U.S. Collegiate. The Dallas, Texas native opened play on Monday with a pair of 73s to stand in a tie for sixth heading into his final round.

On Tuesday, Posey posted eight pars and a birdie to turn at 1-under 34 and recorded birdies on Nos. 10 and 15 to match Martin for the squad’s low round of the tournament.

Leon began his final 18 alone in fifth place after a pair of 72s on Monday before carding a 77 to finish tied with Colorado’s Michael Baird for ninth at 221.

Sophomore Trent Leon moved up six spots and posted a top-20 finish of his own, wrapping up play in a three-way tie for 17th place. The Dallas, Texas native fired a 4-over 74 to finish at 15-over 225.

Fellow sophomore Jonathan Moore rounded out the OSU five with a final round of 83 to tie for 30th place at 229.

The Cowboys will be back in action when they look to defend their title at The Maxwell in Ardmore, Okla. on May 12-13.

This is even sadder then if I was to make a post talking about the NU women winning the national championship earlier this year (and last weekend in beach volleyball, too...)
