Mark Prior and a 3 year stretch where he went 35-17 with an ERA of about 3.5. He finished 3rd in Cy Young voting in 2003.

Kerry Wood had a 5 year stretch where he went 59-41 with an ERA of about 3.4 including the rookie of the year award.

Both always had very high strikeout rates, even in injury years.

They will be seen as never reaching their potential, but neither was a never-was.

112 pitches is only about 7 more than the recommended number depending on who you talk to. And in the historical context of baseball, it's not that much at all. And, when you take it account how fundamentally sound he is, he should have been able to go longer than the average pitcher.

It's very likely that Prior's arm was just going to go one way or another. Loose tendons, bad connections, week muscles, who knows? Dusty Baker probably didn't help things, but you can't say with any amount of certainty that he was the cause of them either.

The Orioles could not have been more careful with Erik Bedard's arm coming up through the minors - and he still needed Tommy John before becoming a mainstay at Camden Yards.
