At the beginning of the season, after Elson had a couple of good games, people were laughing at you becuase in the pre-season you were mad at the FO for taking on Frankie. You also claimed, given who are bigs were (and are), that Oberto should start, or at least play the most minutes beside Tim.
I bet currently there is not one poster that thinks Elson should play more minutes than Oberto just as in December-January there were few posters that advocated for Oberto to get more minutes than Elson. (fuck, even spurs brazil showed signs of hapiness in the game blog when last night Oberto stepped in the court!)
This is just another reason why I trust you opinion much more than 99% of those of other posters. Usually your forward-looking calls are right. Most of the posters here judge players soley on their last nights production.
Props man, you deserve it.

However, if we get to rd 2, I still think we oughta see what Francisco can do against Dirk. The Nuggets, his ex-team, are his nemesis, but that doesn't mean he's completely useless.

Oberto's been a beast this series. He's upped his game and the Spurs desperately need that -- especially how he's fighting for rebounds and tips -- it's just awesome. So that's good and all.
Fracesca Elson is all Nazr out there. Gets beat out of every defensive position and every rebound. Ginobili's a better rebounder than he is.

I don't like Oberto D but Oberto is much better than Elson playing under pressure.
He won everything with Argentina NT.
I hope he keep playing well
After Game 1 of the season against Dallas, there was a thread where every man and his dog was bowing down to Elson, praising him for his effort against the Mavs.
I didn't buy it, and told everyone not to get to excited about Elson and I think more than a few posters got onto me about...

I hope that Elson can turn it around versus teams he matches up better with. He could be important down the line, but right now this is the Elson I watched play in big games over the last couple seasons.
If the Spurs can get by the Nuggets and play teams that have quick bigmen, Elson will be better than he is right now. Against a bruising team like the Nuggets, Elson is pretty much worthless.
And regarding Oberto, as I said all season, he was good when his head was into the game. Sometimes he didn't mentally show up for regular season games and played bad. Hopefully that was just due to the fact that Oberto has never played an 82 game schedule and hit some sort of rookie wall.
But playoff time, Oberto is trustworthy because he has a track record in big games of playing very well.

Funny how many people here make judgments on a guy based on his most recent performance. Elson sucked last night, but it probably isn't final proof that he sucks. He's definitely struggling, but I haven't seen any Spur's A game in a while.

Elson would have maybe 1 or 2 good games against the Mavs/Suns (both would probably be 6-7 game series), which is 1 or 2 games above his average playoff series performance. So yes, Elson would technically do well against the Suns and Mavs.

Why is it that every guard that gets here is given at least one season to acclimate to the Spurs system, but if a big man doesn't come in and turn into DRob in 82 games, he's a bust?
I'm not saying that it will necessarily work out, but we've given the benefit of the doubt to every guard to come in here during the Tim Duncan era, but everyone has already deemed Elson a scrub.

Because he's 31.
He's not a 20-something year old guard getting a chance and needing to learn the system ala Stephen Jackson.
He's not a 20-year-old Jackie Butler.
He's 31.
He had maybe five good games all season. And seems to be getting worse.
I know he excites Spurs fans because he throws down a two-handed dunk every once in a while. And he tries to act bad ass when he pulls down an uncontested rebound and sticks out his elbows, bends his knees and spins around trying to do something to draw attention to himself to act like he accomplished something.
But he's just not a very good basketball player.
He's a 5 and 4 guy who can't stay on the court because of foul trouble.

If he has one good game, it'll be one more good game than Nazr and Rasho had last postseason. That's a tall order for him, though.

Nazr had 18 and 8 in Game 1 of the playoffs last season. Nazr had 15 and 15 against the Nuggets in Game 1 in 2005.
Elson has 8 points in his last 9 playoff games.

Nazr made a three in garbage time, which means that game didn't count. He was out there during garbage time. (Translation: Oh yeah, I forgot about that one, but my point is almost as valid. :))
IMHO, I thought Nazr and Rasho could have worked out. Rasho is the defense and Nazr was the offense, making them into 1 good center. We also had Oberto and possibly could have gotten Scola/Javtokas. And prospects overseas Mahinimi, Skanidize. I think there was no need to trade Rasho for Bonner, we haven't seen him contribute in the playoffs yet. I think we still could have gotten Butler and kept Naz,Rasho, and Oberto, but so far Elson hasn't produced what Rasho and Nazr could have produced. As well as the fact that Oberto has been playing light years ahead of him.

If a guy is going to be here just to rack up regular season wins and then relegated to the end of the bench for the playoffs then there's no point in paying him that much money, or IMO having him on the roster. If Elson is remotely useful, even in spot duty or situational rotations during the later rounds of the playoffs, he's a better deal than Rasho or Nazr.
^ You never know. We might see that as well this year too. Pop might just run small against the Suns and Mavericks again and drop Bonner, Elson, Butler on the bench. Even though Elson, I THINK, can stay with Dirk, Pop would have Horry or Bowen on him. The thing with Nazr was though he got dog treatment after he shot that 'gloatful' three and it carried through the rest of the Kings series. Eventually Rasho was booted to the bench as well.

I was perfectly happy having Rasho stand in the lane with his hands up, block shots, commit fouls and allow Duncan to help from the weak side.
Nazr always had good games against Phoniex, another running team, but I've never seen him play against the Mavs or have any stats on that.
But with Rasho his fundamental D could have been of use to us.

That is the main reason why Rasho was traded. He's actually a pretty good regular season center. But he, like Elson, just isn't built for the playoffs. Rasho and Elson both have matchups where they can be effective in the playoffs, but overall they both aren't versatile enough to be playoff starters against every team in the playoffs.
For that reason, I'd compare Elson more to Rasho and Oberto more to Nazr. Oberto and Nazr can both be put out there versus most teams, but have shortcoming to their game that can limit their productivity.

Rasho was pretty fucking good in the playoffs for Minnesota, and wasn't terrible the one year that he played in the rotation while he was here. Since the Spurs lost to a team that shot layups last year, I still say he would have been the perfect solution. The Spurs are still in the rare situation that they should not be changing their lineups or their basic strategy for anyone else. Last year was a mistake by the coaching staff. Rasho was overpaid as a zero minutes per game bench player, but it doesn't mean he couldn't have been useful. If Pop had benched everyone who played like shit in game 2 against the Mavs he wouldn't have been able to field a starting five.
