LONG BEACH JAM DIAL IN TO NBA TALENT POOL

LONG BEACH, CA - The American Basketball Association (ABA) Long Beach Jam franchise announced today the signing of 6-foot-4 guard, Derrick Dial. Dial joined the team at training camp today following his recent release from the NBA's Orlando Magic.

Dial, 27, brings solid NBA experience to the Jam. Prior to his work with the Orlando Magic, he played 25 games for the New Jersey Nets during the 2001-02 season (2.9 ppg, 1.8 rpg, 1.2 apg). The Nets released Dial and he was picked up in Jan. 2002 by the ABA Southern California Surf team, where he put up a league-leading 27.4 ppg, pulled down 7.3 rpg and dished 6.9 apg. He was called back up to the NBA in March 2002 and played seven games for the Toronto Raptors (4.0 ppg, 1.6 rpg). Dial played for the San Antonio Spurs both during the 1999-2000 season (5.0 ppg, 3.3 rpg) and the 2000-01 season (2.6 ppg, 1.2 rpg). Dial also brings in a high level of overseas experience having been an all-star for Peristeri Athens in the Greek league in 1998-99. In addition, he played for the famed Virtus Bologna of the Italian Series A league last season. With Bologna, Dial averaged 13.9 ppg, 5.0 rpg, 2.1 apg and 1.2 spg during Euroleague competition and 15.1 ppg, 6.1 rpg and 1.8 apg in Italian Series A league play. Dial, a Detroit, Mich. native, played college ball at Eastern Michigan University from 1994-99. During his senior season, he netted 20.9 ppg and pulled down 6.7 rpg. His career accomplishments at EMU include averaging 15.5 ppg and 5.7 rpg, finishing third on the all-time scoring list with 1891 total points, and eighth in career rebounds with 692. Dial became only the second player at EMU to score more than 1800 career points and grab more than 600 career rebounds (former NBA player Kennedy McIntosh was the first).

"Derrick Dial has proven his skills at the highest levels worldwide," said Steve Chase. "We are confident he will produce for us and look forward to helping him get back to the NBA."
