Tito hasn't done anything in a looooooooooooooong time. If you're going to have his mouth you have to back it up. I would love for him to stay even though I root against him but it's not going to happen. He would be awesome for MMA if his talent matched his mouth.
Rumor has him having massive back problems.
Either thats true or he simply has not evolved with MMA.
Didn't Joe Silva say not too long ago that injuries have wrecked his career?? I do feel that has happened as Tito is not nearly as explosive as he once was. His last good win was against Forrest and he was injured in that fight as well. I do feel he has evolved as his standup is lightyears better than it once was and Tito is very hard to submit but his takedowns are not what they were i feel because of injuries. I am sure this is it for him in the UFC, hopefully he wins although i am thinking he is probably going to lose. I am betting he will have a re-match with Frank Shamrock soon and maybe 2 or 3 more fights before he retires. Tito has had a great career and he should go into the UFC hall of fame but that may not happen thanks to Dana asshole White.

Yes I believe so
And Dana will put him in the Hall of Fame. Part of Dana's job is to stir things up and he knows exactly what he is doing even though he will make a few mistakes along the way.

even though he will make a few mistakes along the way.
You mean like fucking up the Randy/Fedor fight
Putting AA on the undercard
Debuting Brock against a submission specialist
Things like that
You mean like fucking up the Randy/Fedor fight
This one is extremely complicated and I think it is short sighted to only blame this on Dana.
Putting AA on the undercard
Huge mistake and he has admitted this. If Arlovski does indeed fight for Affliction I would say this is the biggest mistake of his career.
Debuting Brock against a submission specialist
I thought it was a good fight and a smart matchup...Every pre fight poll I saw had the projected winner at nearly at 50%. A matchup doesn't get better than that does it?
It answered a huge question about Brock right away. He can hang with the big boys.
That loss in no way hurt Brocks career.
And Joe Silva made that matchup, not Dana.
But take that list....assume all of it was wrong and multiply it by 100 and the guy has done way more right than wrong. MMA would still only be regional show in America without him.
And look...the longer this goes on the less I like him. You simply have to ignore what he says and just focus on what he gets done which like I said, is more right than wrong.

Top TV Execs Criticize CBS's Decision to Air MMA
Posted by Adam Swift at 11:09 AM
The most high profile push back against EliteXC on CBS was launched this week by Sumner Redstone, the highly influential and respected chairman of CBS and Viacom. According to a report by the The Hollywood Reporter:
"Les usually asks my opinion," Sumner Redstone said Wednesday when asked about the four mixed-martial arts fights that will begin airing soon on CBS. This time, the Viacom and CBS chairman said, Moonves did not.
Redstone said the deal, struck with Elite Xtreme Combat, probably was a mistake, not because CBS won't turn a profit from it but because it is not "socially responsible" to air the typically bloody bouts on free, broadcast TV.
"I'm a lover not a fighter," Redstone said. "I don't like the sport."
The comments were made during a panel discussion on the sports industry at the Milken Institute Global Conference. Redstone and Moonves have had a rocky relationship in the past, so perhaps some of Redstone's criticism can be attribute to their personal conflict. However, Ed Goren, President of FOX Sports, was also critical of MMA on network television, telling the audience "we don't need money that badly."
It is important to note that the UFC's rumored negotiations with FOX are with the entertainment division and not Goren's sports division.

UFC tackles long-term growth issues
by Dave Meltzer on May 03, 2008 at 9:05 am ET
The success of the Ultimate Fighting Championship over the past three years has always carried with it one major question: Is this a long-term sport or a short-term fad?
After all, when what was essentially an underground sport suddenly becomes popular based largely on a reality show on a cable station, it's easy to question its longevity.
But as we've passed three years, it's looking more and more like "fad" is not the right word.
Short-term, most signs are very strong, particularly on recent pay-per-view numbers. But there are questions that remain before mixed martial arts can be declared a permanent, significant part of our sports culture. Can MMA create new headlining stars? And how will the UFC manage to improve its television profile?
On pay-per-view television, the company's most important revenue stream, the last five outings have produced three of the company's top 10 shows.
The run started with the Dec. 29 event with a Wanderlei Silva vs. Chuck Liddell top match (with a strong No. 2 match with Georges St. Pierre vs. Matt Hughes); the Feb. 2 show featuring the debut of Brock Lesnar vs. Frank Mir; and the most recent April 19 show with St. Pierre vs. Matt Serra. It's the company's best run since late 2006, and that's throwing in a much-criticized price increase from $39.95 to $44.95 per show.
This surge in pay-per-view revenue has come during a time most believe the country is in recession.
The UFC does not release pay-per-view numbers, but all three events are believed to have fallen in the range of 525,000-650,000 buys. Dec. 29 and April 19 both did $5 million in live gates, ranking No. 3 and No. 2, respectively, in company history.
At $5.1 million in U.S. dollars, the St. Pierre vs. Serra set the Canadian record for the largest combat sports live gate in history, beating the record set by Sugar Ray Leonard vs. Roberto Duran in 1980.
Another good sign is that aside from Liddell, who was established as the company's biggest star when he beat Randy Couture just as UFC and Spike TV began their partnership, the company drew big numbers with new drawing cards.
Lesnar, who made his name first as a pro wrestler, was in his first UFC match and the show was marketed as almost a "What if a world champion pro wrestler fought for real?" type of event. He garnered more interest for his debut than any fighter in UFC history. But there are certainly questions whether or not he'll be a long-term drawing card.
Was it a one-time curiosity, or will people be interested in his second match, on Aug. 9 in Minneapolis, when he faces Mark Coleman, an aging MMA legend?
UFC also had the belief that Lesnar drew from a different audience than they usually attract -- specifically, pro wrestling fans -- which again brings into question whether that fan base will buy a second time.
People who didn't see the fight and heard about Lesnar losing in 90 seconds by submission to Mir may now consider Lesnar a joke. Most who saw the fight would have a different opinion since Lesnar, a former NCAA champion heavyweight in college, looked as impressive as anyone could look in a debut match with a quick submission loss.
The raw, athletic talent that some didn't want to accept because he came from the entertainment world was clearly evident. Lesnar made a mistake based on inexperience. Even if UFC is able to market the match around Lesnar looking for redemption and create an aura around Coleman's last shot, this time Lesnar has to win. If he does draw again, it's going to be difficult to promote him in a headline position with two straight losses.
If Lesnar doesn't work out, the match was still a success because Mir came out with more notoriety and popularity than at any point in his career. The former champion is now the probable next challenger for interim heavyweight champion Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, in a match that should take place in late 2008.
You can certainly make a strong case that there are more worthy contenders from a win/loss standpoint than Mir. But barring an injury or something unforeseen, such as Randy Couture and UFC settling their legal differences, that win looks to have given Mir a shot at regaining the title he once held.
The success of St. Pierre is another strong long-term sign. At the age of 26, he figures to have significant longevity as a welterweight champion or leading contender. While Lesnar's ability to be a championship-level heavyweight is a major question, St. Pierre has looked unstoppable and whatever mental questions there were about him last year were seemingly answered when he withstood a tremendous amount of pressure in dominating Serra.
Of course, everyone thought that of St. Pierre in late 2006 after he beat Hughes for the first time. Then Matt Serra walked in, knocked St. Pierre out and opened up a whole line of questions that it seemingly took St. Pierre a year to fully answer.
Short-term business indicators are also good. The only negative this year is that while Lesnar did big numbers on pay-per-view, they had to heavily paper the Mandalay Bay Events Center, drawing barely 7,000 paid.
The probable answer is that Lesnar drew from the WWE audience, which is used to buying pay-per-view, but those fans aren't as used to coming to Las Vegas and paying UFC ticket prices for a live event.
Any worries it was a sign that Las Vegas, the company's home market, was burning out have been alleviated since the next show, on May 24 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena, has only a few hundred tickets left, as does London on June 7.
At this point, expectations for the July 5 show in Las Vegas is that the bout between Quinton Jackson vs. Forrest Griffin for the light heavyweight title will do high-end business. The two are building the match weekly as opposing coaches on the reality show, and light heavyweight championship has been the company's marquee division largely from the day it was created.
But there still exists a huge long-term question.
As strong as the UFC brand name is today, to remain that way, it needs a television vehicle. Without a television show that draws a significant audience to pump up the pay-per-view events, interest in those fights will quickly wane.
"The Ultimate Fighter" show has worked in that role up to this point. But as it starts filming its eighth season in a few weeks, it's fare to wonder if the shows format isn't getting stale. After all, there are only so many ways to frame 16 fighters in a house, watching similar training sessions, sound bites and fights in a gym with no spectators, before it gets stale.
Ratings have slipped the last few seasons, and the April 30 show hit a low point with a 0.91 rating and 1.2 million viewers. Whether the show can ride a few more cycles over the next few years, it's television, and thus, it's guaranteed that it will not last forever.

A very petty and childsish move by the UFC to take ratings away from EliteXC but genius business anyway. I don't think this will hurt them to much but it was take some away. Maybe half a point?

On the night Elite Xtreme Combat makes it network television debut on CBS, Spike TV and the UFC will counter with a night-long broadcast schedule of Chuck Liddell programming.
"EliteXC: PRIMETIME" airs from 9-11 p.m. ET/PT, and Spike TV's homage to Liddell begins at 8 p.m. ET/PT and runs for three hours.
The night includes the premiere of "Ultimate Iceman: Chuck Liddell," an hour-long documentary that chronicles the career of the UFC's former light heavyweight champion both in and out of the cage.
Spike TV will follow with a "Liddell vs. Silva: UFC Unleashed Special Edition" that includes Liddell's December 2007 main-event fight with Wanderlei Silva. It'll be the first time the UFC 79 fight airs on cable TV.
The night actually kicks off with "Ultimate Knockouts 4," which features Liddell's most memorable bouts.
CBS, meanwhile, will run its first "Saturday Night Fights" event the same night. Kevin "Kimbo Slice" Ferguson and James Thompson headline the event, and EliteXC middleweight champ Robbie Lawler defends his title against Scott Smith.
Hardcore Championship Fighting is officially out of business, CEO Keith Crawford has informed Sherdog.com.
The news comes after a period of great optimism for the Canadian organization. HCF was expected to announce this week that it had been purchased -- a move that Crawford hoped would put the promotion among the few legitimately vying for the No. 2 spot behind the UFC.
HCF had made waves since it started promoting last July, signing such high-profile fighters as Antonio Rogerio Nogueira (Pictures), Renato Sobral (Pictures), Gegard Mousasi (Pictures) and David Loiseau (Pictures).
Crawford would not speak on the record about the causes of HCF's demise. However, he said that both he and former partner Dave Houshiar will continue as MMA promoters, each with his own event.

UFC light heavyweight Matt Hamill will be the subject of an upcoming movie entitled "Hamill" about his early life and wrestling career.
Hamill, who entered the UFC via the second season of "The Ultimate Fighter," discussed the flick in a recent interview with UFC.com's Thomas Gerbasi.
The movie, which stars Eben Kostbar, has been criticized by the deaf community because it features a non-deaf actor. Hamill confirmed that two casting calls for the film were canceled due to protests but sticks by he decision to support the actor.
Kostbar, who's appeared in a few television roles and in some smaller-budget movies, is fluent in American Sign Language and has wrestling experience -- and he helped co-write the script for the movie -- but he's been targeted by a segment of the non-deaf community that believes a deaf actor should be picked for the starring role.
"I was really shocked by the reaction," Hamill told UFC.com. "I thought the movie would receive positive feedback from the deaf community because this movie is based on a deaf athlete and the life surrounding his deafness. It hurt at first, but I've come to realize that this is a small portion of the deaf community. With positive things, comes the negative things. If anything, it has kept me grounded."
The movie, which is being promoted as "Million Dollar Baby" meets "Rudy," will feature subtitles throughout the film in hopes the it'll appeal to deaf and hearing audiences.
"Hamill" is set for a 2009 release and is being filmed this fall in Los Angeles and Rochester, N.Y. The low-budget movie is produced by K'Dee Miller and will be directed by Joseph McKelheer.
Hamill (4-1 MMA, 4-1 UFC) last competed at UFC Fight Night 13, where he posted a second-round TKO of Tim Boetsch. He's recently been working with Matt Serra and UFC vice president of regulatory affairs Marc Ratner to gather political support to legalize MMA in New York State.
wow....thats cool. I am assuming this is an independant movie.
Dana White Calls Tito Ortiz 'A F---ing Idiot. One of the Dumbest Human Beings I've Ever Met'
As he prepares to fight Lyoto Machida for what could be the last fight of his career at UFC 84, Tito Ortiz said this week that he would consider returning to UFC if its president, Dana White, would apologize to him and show him respect.
On a conference call to promote UFC 84 today, White made clear that that's not going to happen.
"Tito is a f---ing idiot," White said. "He's one of the dumbest human beings I've ever met. Everything that comes out of his mouth makes no sense."
White added that he doesn't think UFC needs Ortiz because he doesn't think Ortiz can beat any of UFC's top fighters.
"I put up with his s--- when he was a good fighter," White said. "He's not anymore."
White said he hasn't been impressed with any of Ortiz's last five fights, which include two wins over an aging Ken Shamrock, a split decision over a relatively inexperienced Forrest Griffin, a loss to Chuck Liddell and a draw with Rashad Evans.
"He's not in anybody's Top 10," White said. "I have no interest whatsoever in being in the Tito Ortiz business. ... I've never wanted to see anyone get their ass kicked worse than I want to see Tito get his kicked next Saturday night."

Good read ---
EliteXC "Primetime" seems to be living up to its name.
Ticket sales for the historic May 31 event on CBS have reached the 5,000 mark, according to the Prudential Center's box office in Newark, N.J., with a boost anticipated in the final two weeks leading up to showtime.
With additional tallies expected from a strong contingent of local fighters on the undercard, New Jersey Athletic Control Board Deputy Attorney General Nick Lembo estimates the show is on track to becoming the second highest paid-attendance MMA event in the Garden State to date.
UFC 78 "Validation," held last November at the same venue, drew 11,828 paid attendees and earned $2,101,360 in live gate receipts, according to figures released by Zuffa. A Cage Fury Fighting Championships event attracted 7,138 paid attendees to the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, N.J. in June 2007.
In a teleconference held Thursday, EliteXC Live Events President Gary Shaw confirmed the newly-built Prudential Center is currently configured to hold 12,000 spectators on May 31.
Local draws like Nick Serra, brother of former UFC welterweight champion Matt, and former New York Jets offensive guard and All-American wrestler Carlton Haselrig, as well as circuit fighters like middleweight Chris Liguori (Pictures) and bantamweight Zach Makovsky, could draw another 3,000 spectators, estimates Lembo. Many of these athletes are selling tickets on their own through family, friends, and their gyms.
"The one factor that might affect live attendance numbers would be the event's ready availability on broadcast television," said Lembo.
"Primetime" is the first of four EliteXC events scheduled for CBS's Saturday night slot in 2008, and could be watched by millions gauging past ratings in that time slot.
Kevin "Kimbo Slice" Ferguson, and the curiosity surrounding his rise from Internet tough guy to bona fide MMA athlete, is expected to draw fresh viewers previously unfamiliar with the sport formerly relegated to cable television.
Ferguson's starring role has not come without criticism.
UFC president Dana White, who was in negotiations earlier this year to air the UFC on CBS before EliteXC nabbed the coveted spot, has been unfavorable of the network's choice to use the 2-0 fighter.
"To have CBS, a big network like that, move forward with a guy like Kimbo Slice headlining it - there's no secret, that's what I tried to stay away from," said White during a teleconference on Thursday touting UFC 84 "Ill Will" on May 24. "Kimbo Slice isn't a mixed martial artist. This guy was fighting in your backyard three months ago, and now he's going to be headlining on CBS. Personally, I think it sucks."
EliteXC's Shaw was quick to defend Ferguson, along with the remaining May 31 roster, which includes a handful of athletes that have fought in the UFC before.
"In the UFC, nobody can be bigger than Dana White and the UFC," said Shaw. "In EliteXC, everyone can be bigger than Gary Shaw, at least not in the waistline, but in notoriety and [they] can be bigger than our brand. It's supposed to be about the athletes."
If it is all about the athletes, EliteXC has done its best to pick and choose them to cater to fans' preferences. All five main card bouts on May 31 feature strikers, including a quartet of middleweights who all relish in the stand-up game.
Scott Smith, who will challenge EliteXC middleweight champion Robbie Lawler (Pictures) for his title, goes by the moniker "Hands of Steel" for a reason. Eleven of his thirteen victories have come from knockout or TKO.
"There's no secret to my game," said Smith during Thursday's teleconference. "I'm not going out there to try to out-point him. Every combo I throw is going to try and finish the fight. If I land a clean shot, I can knock anyone out."
Smith, whose past performances have graced more than a few highlight reels, voiced strong sentiment regarding the gravity of his role on May 31. It was shared by his opponent Lawler, as well as fellow middleweights Phil Baroni (Pictures) and Joey Villasenor (Pictures), who will face off in a featured bout.
"Every time I talk to people that watch an MMA fight for the first time, they get hooked instantly. People just don't always want to buy it on pay-per-view," said Smith. "This is going to be on free television. We're going get millions of people watching this that may have never watched MMA before and they're going to be hooked. We're going to get a lot of new fans, and I'm honored to be a part of it."

Sakuraba-Manhoef, Jacare-Mayhem Announced
Options: Email Article | Printer Friendly
Friday, May 23, 2008
by Tim Leidecker (
[email protected])
With a little over three weeks to go until Dream 4, its promoters officially announced the four quarterfinal fights for their middleweight grand prix on Friday. In a press conference at Kazushi Sakuraba (Pictures)'s Laughter7 dojo in Tokyo, Japan, Dream event producer Keiichi Sasahara revealed the bouts that were voted on by the fans.
Once again taking center stage in his unprecedented fourteenth main event for Pride, Hero's and now for Dream, it will be Sakuraba himself who squares off against dangerous Dutchman Melvin Manhoef (Pictures). Fans had originally voted for the long awaited dream bout between Sakuraba and Kiyoshi Tamura (Pictures), but the U-File Camp fighter withdrew from the tournament due to a dislocated finger.
Taking Tamura's place will be Manhoef, who qualified for the final eight with a first round TKO over Dae Won Kim (Pictures) in his May 11 reserve match. After enjoying a couple of favorable matchups in his stint with Hero's, the explosive Manhoef will be step back up in the type of competition "The Gracie Hunter" faced during patches of his Pride career.
The second quarterfinal on the June 15 card will be contested between Armenian all-rounder Gegard Mousasi (Pictures) and Korean judoka Dong Sik Yoon (Pictures). Mousasi is coming off a surprise first round submission win over jiu-jitsu black belt Denis Kang (Pictures), while Yoon took a unanimous decision over fellow judo player Shungo Oyama (Pictures).
Both fighters are currently in top form, with Mousasi winning seven of his last eight straight fights inside the distance, including victories over Cuban judoka Hector Lombard (Pictures), French kickboxer Gregory Bouchelaghem (Pictures) and Brazilian muay Thai specialist Evangelista "Cyborg" Santos. Yoon has been a winner in his last four bouts, finishing three with his patented armbar.
Ronaldo "Jacaré" Souza, the 2005 ADCC world submission grappling champion in the under 87kg (192 lbs) division, will take on Jason "Mayhem" Miller, who is a Brazilian jiu-jitsu brown belt under Marc Laimon. The Brazilian "alligator" dominated debutant Ian Murphy (Pictures) en route for an easy first round submission, while "Mayhem" thrashed pro-wrestler Katsuyori Shibata (Pictures) to book his place in the quarterfinals.
The fourth and last battle is a rematch between Croatian striker Zelg Galesic (Pictures) and Japanese kickboxer Taiei Kin (Pictures). Both fighters previously met at the final Hero's event in Korea last October, but the contest ended in an anti-climatic doctor's stoppage after a mere thirty-six seconds when Galesic cut Kin's eyelid with his toenail. Now they are going at it again in what promises to be a stand-up battle.
In addition, the fourth and final quarterfinal fight for Dream's lightweight grand prix was formalized for June 15, between grappling prodigy Shinya Aoki (Pictures) and Olympic wrestler Katsuhiko Nagata (Pictures).
The final round of the 155-pound tournament will take place on July 21 at the Castle Hall in Osaka, while the finals of its middleweight counterpart will be waged at the Saitama Super Arena on September 23.

Here’s more from TMZ.com:
“MJ rolled up to the event in a wheelchair, just in time to watch Tito Ortiz get smacked around … that is, if he could see anything through those ridiculously blacked out shades.”

Come on, it's Dana...
Fall 2007
"I'll have Fedor by November after he gets done with his Sambo tournament."
"We're in negotiations with Fedor, the number one Heavy Weight on the planet."
"We're confident we'll have Fedor by the end of the year."
"Fedor and Randy will be the biggest fight in MMA history."
Oct-Nov
"Fedor sucks! He's not even a top 5 HW"
"Randy would smash Fedor easily. He's overhyped and untested. He hasn't fought anyone in the last year and a half."
"They're full of shit (Fedor's managers) and that's the bottom line."
"His managers are F..ing liars!"
"Fedor is a fraud...he isn't even a top five fighter!"
Early 2008
"Fedor is a farce"
3/3/08 after UFC 82 press conf - "It's the hatred of me that makes Fedor ranked #1"
3/5/08 - "People think he's the best—I don't, not even close. I like Randy, I genuinely like to think he's a good guy. As much as we've gone back and forth on this, I would sign Fedor and do everything possible to get Randy in the octagon with him. I'd do anything, because a., it's a great fight and b., I think Randy would smash Fedor."
-----------------
"Brock Lesnar and K-1 is a circus act!"
Aug 2007 - Dana - “I am pretty much going to guarantee you right here that the UFC will get him. Lesnar should have started with us, but we’ll be happy to have him. We are all booked up through 2007, but we would like to have him start after the new year.”
"We're excited to announce the signing of Brock Lesnar!"

I got this from a recent interview with Ken Shamrock -
MD: Alright, well there are some other things I want to talk about as well. In recent news you have had a little bit of a war of words with your brother Frank Shamrock and lately it seems you have both shown an interest in fighting each other. After Frank's recent loss to Cung Le overall how much is there a chance that a fight with you and your brother will take place?
KS: I think that will be something that will be worked out definitely. I mean its not about winning or losing anymore, its about fighting fights that I want to fight and Frank has made it over and over again with his disrespect towards me and the family that had raised him and helped him become who he is today. So as long as Frank keeps expressing that and keeps on expressing the will to fight me I am definitely open to it. Just because he lost to Cung Le makes no difference to me I'll still put a fist in his face.
It sounds like there's some real bad blood there. Doesn't sound staged one bit. Who wins?

I'll ask an mma (kind of) question for anybody who knows the story. A couple of days ago I was watching the Fight Science: MMA special on NatGeo. As anybody who watched it knows, it featured Dean Lister, and this got me to thinking; a couple of years ago I heard Ryan Bennett mention what a nice guy Dean is and how his ex-wife was a total b*tch and that she had really screwed him over. I'm thinking either Evan or Leonard would know the story that I don't behind that statement.
She was a super model or something and he was completely absorbed into his marriage and if I remember right she cheated on him. Completely wrecked his life and he was going to stop fighting. They were both pretty well known so I am sure he was pretty mortified.
(I'm pretty sure thats what happened)
Wow Ryan Bennett…hope his family is ok.

Wow that would be awesome if Affliction was free. Has anyone seen the new trailer for UFC 2009? It looks crazy.
That deal fell through awhile back. I don't know if the details as to why were ever reported. The deal was to show the undercard live, and the main card on pay-per-view. The full card would be shown, in full, a week later. I believe that's the case, but Evan or Leonard can chime in here. IIRC, they had problems working deals out with other groups (Golden Boy was rumored to be apart of the show, but De La Hoya came out later and said it wasn't going to pursue MMA at this time. I also believe they were trying to get a deal with HBO, which I believe the Golden Boy deal stemmed from. Because the HBO deal fell through, the Golden Boy affiliation also fell through. Geez, I feel like this is a book already. But, because the HDNet deal didn't work out, they needed other backers and that's how "The Trump." came into play. Others can add details or correct me where necessary.
Cung Le will probably hang them up soon...that sucks.

I was watching some UFC most butal fights, actually sequences. And hat was fights from the past - from first till 12 or so UFC turnament.
Damn that was brutal as hell. No gloves and you could basicly do eveything. Soccer kicks stomps, headbutts, hiting to the back! , hitting with open fist.
Street fights more then anything, and less techinqe.
What was also noticable is Big John McCarthy was oficiating almost every fight! And he had worse job then todays refs.

From mmajunkie:
Rich Franklin (23-3 MMA, 10-2 UFC) will move to the UFC's light heavyweight division to fight Matt Hamill (4-1 MMA, 4-1 UFC) at UFC 88 in September.
On Monday MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) first reported that Franklin had been tapped for the Sept. 6 event, and today, we learned from sources close to both fighters that bout agreements have been distributed and are expected to be finalized this week.
The fight was first reported earlier today by MMARated.com.
UFC 88, which features a main event between Chuck Liddell and Rashad Evans, takes place at Phillips Arena in Atlanta. The Franklin-Hamill fight will likely be the night's co-main event.
Franklin, a former UFC middleweight champ, has been fighting in the 185-pound class but had already lost twice to current title-holder Anderson Silva. As we reported yesterday, he had been approached about moving up a fight class to create some new fight opportunities.
Hamill, who is a fellow Cincinnati-area native like Franklin, provides just that.
Hamill, an MMA newcomer who found his way into the UFC via the third season of "The Ultimate Fighter," was forced out of the competition due to injury. Since then, though, he's racked up a 4-1 record -- with his only loss being a very controversial split-decision defeat to Michael Bisping at a UFC 75 event in Bisping's home country.
Most recently, Hamill defeated Tim Boetsch via second-round TKO.
Meanwhile, outside of those losses to Silva, Franklin is 11-0 with 10 stoppages in his past 11 fights. He most recently scored a second-round TKO of Travis Lutter at UFC 83.
Franklin last competed at 205 pounds at The Ultimate Fighter 1 Finale in April 2005. He called it a "special case" since the first-ever Spike TV broadcast would reach millions of viewers and could catapult his popularity.
His move is not necessarily permanent, according to a source close to Franklin.

They are if you're a big giant who can barely fight thereby taking away every possible chance he has at winning.
So does that include Sylvia?
And my usual disclaimer...I blame Fedor's management...not Fedor.

In all seriousness, the rules will somehow be slanted to favor Fedor. I have zero doubt that was in his contract...something...be it ring or elbows I guarantee it will come out eventually that his team demanded it.
Tim has two things in his favor
1. His odd size creates all kinds of problems
2. Its been a long time since Fedor has fought someone his size and talent level. Look at Tims fighting history..how many MMA fighters have fought better opponents time and time again like Tim? Name a fighter across any weight class.
I absolutely love Fedor but I believe his team has screwed him up with the way they have handled his career for the past few years. These guys have to face relative peer talent consistently to keep sharp and he has not done that. His last few fights are garbage.
Tim will win this fight, mark.it.down and I will not change my prediction.

I am sure it has caused serious damage in the past.
You're taking a MMA fighter with big time strength and allowing them to stomp at some point its going to crush someones neck or smash their nose into their brain.
It would eventually have happened. Hell even crushing someones eyeball and blinding them in one eye...that's not good and its not needed.

MMA outside the UFC sucks and that’s a very bad thing for the sport. The best thing that can happen is for Kimbo to lose so EliteXC can get back on track and stop focusing on him and DREAM to start filling out the arena in Tokyo…not Yokahama or Osaka. That’s critical..they need to succeed in Tokyo.

FEDOR EMELIANENKO has injury concerns ahead of his fight with Tim Sylvia, according to UFC superstar Michael Bisping.
Russian legend Emelianenko, 31, squares up against former UFC heavyweight champion Tim Sylvia in a fight for new MMA promotion Affliction on 19 July.
But speaking exclusively to SunSport, British star Bisping, 29, claims The Last Emperor will go into the bout with 32-year-old American Sylvia at less than full fitness.
Bisping said: “It’s going to be good to see if Fedor is still the man but I’ve heard on the grapevine from inside sources that he could be injured.“But this is time for Fedor to step up. Everyone knows what Tim Sylvia is all about but Fedor’s had an aura about him for a long time.
“The guy was devastating in Pride but he’s had a long lay off now and his last couple of fights have been against smaller guys.
“It’ll be interesting to see if he’s still got what he had in Pride - which I’m sure he has - because the guy’s probably the best fighter in MMA history.”
Emelianenko will be the favourite going into the heavyweight clash, but Bisping warned the Russian of the threat Sylvia poses.
Bisping added: “Tim will give anyone a hard day, he’s a very, very experienced, underrated fighter and has knocked out a who’s who of MMA.
“But he’s gone a little bit stale lately – he’s trying not to lose as opposed to trying to win which has given him a boring style.
“In the past he was knocking people out left, right and centre. If he gets back to his roots and goes out like that then who knows, maybe he could surprise a lot of people.”
But Bisping admitted: “I think the fight will play out similar to when Randy Couture fought Tim Sylvia, but I’m picking Fedor to beat Tim.”

Jeremy Jackson, who appeared on season four of "The Ultimate Fighter," was arrested late last month and charged with seven felony offenses, including two counts of forcible rape.
The 26-year-old Jackson was apprehended on June 30 in Oxnard, Calif., and is being held in a Ventura County jail, with bail set at $1 million.
Officials with the Ventura County Sheriff's Department confirmed the arrest and charges with MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com). Events surrounding the arrest were not made available.
In addition to the two counts of forcible rape, Jackson was charged with kidnapping to commit another crime, first-degree residential burglary, assault with a firearm, dissuading a witness by force or threat, and criminal threats. At his initial arraignment, three additional charges -- all felonies -- were levied against Jackson, which included two counts of sexual assault and one count of sex crimes (aggravated circumstances).
Jackson is due in Ventura County Superior Court again Wednesday, at which time he is expected to enter pleas to the charges.
Jackson's appearance on the fourth season of "TUF" was short-lived. UFC President Dana White kicked him off the reality show after he violated rules by leaving the fighter house to meet a woman.
He was invited back to fight on the season finale and suffered a neck injury in a submission loss to Pete Spratt.

Jesse Taylor is in trouble again....411 mania/mma
During an interview last Thursday, former Ultimate Fighter contestant Jesse Taylor may have ruffled a few feathers within the UFC with his comments towards Quinton "Rampage" Jackson's recent run-in with the law. Apparently Taylor said "What goes around, comes around, I guess." in regards to the comments that Rampage had made to Dana White about his concerns with how Taylor would represent the UFC. However, on Friday, Taylor seemingly backtracked a little with his comments:
"I feel bad for the guy. Being on top of the fighting world and then not being there is going to destroy you. I think it was tough to handle for the guy. I wish he gets better, I didn't know he was in this situation. He's in a lot worse situation than I was in."
UFC management is said to be very angry with Taylor's first comment about Jackson. Rampage is very tight with management and is not a guy you want to make negative public comments about. Don't be surprised if Taylor is released this week.
