Herring is being set up to be canned. They most likely signed him to a three-fight contract and wanted to ditch him after that first loss. Another loss to Nog would give them a handy excuse.

I don't know....maybe. I'm sure Dana was pissed after his first fight...especially for what he's getting paid. He looked 100X better against Imes. I thought they might try to keep building him up after that fight. Maybe Herring asked for Nog? Who knows...

Dana White Confirms Signing of Mauricio “Shogun” Rua

Posted by UFC Junkie on May 24, 2007 at 4:42 pm ET

UFC president Dana White today confirmed a recent report that the UFC has signed PRIDE superstar Mauricio “Shogun” Rua (16-2 MMA, 0-0 UFC).

On Tuesday the official Web site for Chute Box announced that Rua, winner of PRIDE’s 2005 Grand Prix Tournament, had been signed by the organization and might even debut at UFC 72 next month.

White confirmed the signing during a pre-UFC 71 conference call with the media today, but he said he wasn’t sure of the details of the contract and wasn’t certain when Rua may make his Octagon debut.

However, White did confirm that he considers Rua a top contender for UFC light heavyweight champion Chuck Liddell’s belt. Additionally, he stated that Liddell is only a few fights away from “cleaning out the whole division” and that he considers Rua one of the fighters standing in his way of doing that.

Based on those comments, one could reason that Rua may not have to wait long for a title shot. After all, it’s not as though the Brazilian hasn’t faced the cream of the crop already.

The 25-year-old has fought for PRIDE Fighting Championships since October 2003 and has racked up victories over such notables as Quinton Jackson, Ricardo Arona and Antonio Rogerio “Minotoro” Nogueira. His resume contains victories over a virtual who’s who of 205-pounders.

Of course, all of this talk about Liddell rests on the outcome of Saturday’s UFC 71 main event. But either way, the UFC wins. If Liddell holds onto his belt, that sets up the long-anticipated fight between Rua and him. And if Jackson wins, their rematch becomes a perfect main event for a future show.

Dana White: Diego Sanchez Nearly Retired Prior to UFC 69

http://ufcjunkie.com/2007/05/25/dana-white-diego-sanchez-nearly-retired-prior-to-ufc-69/

Diego SanchezWith today’s UFC 71 weigh-ins, I can’t help but remember the infamous weigh-in events from UFC 69 last month in Houston.

The day before a much-publicized main-card bout bout between The Ultimate Fighter 1 cast mates and (now bitter rivals) Josh Koscheck and Diego Sanchez, Houston fight fans got a preview of just how real the hatred was.

With a tiny stage and Sanchez’s temper boiling over, the usually-calm Sanchez shoved Koscheck. Sanchez tripped over the scale and fell backward, and as Koscheck stated, only UFC announcer Bruce Buffer’s quick reflexes kept him from flying off the stage.

The incident — which can be relived through a UFCjunkie.com YouTube video — had nearly everyone excited for the following day’s actual fight. Unfortunately, all the pre-event hijinks overshadowed what eventually became a lopsided and perhaps unspectacular unanimous-decision win for Koscheck. As I’ve stated before, he won the fight more with brains than braun and implemented a seemingly fool-proof plan.

Although Koscheck took the brunt of the criticism, Sanchez was far more inactive than his opponent. However, according to UFC president Dana White, there was a perfectly reasonable explanation for Sanchez’s sluggish performance.

During yesterday’s conference call with media members, White said that the organization actually planned to announce Sanchez’s retirement from the sport during the UFC 69 weigh-ins. Early tests indicated that the 25-year-old was suffering from Hepatitis C, a blood-borne, infectious, viral disease that often tears down a person’s liver.

Before the fight, though, subsequent tests suggested otherwise.

As White explained:

“We kept testing him. The doctors were baffled. They eventually decided that he doesn’t have Hep C, but they didn’t know what was wrong with him, so he goes in and fights that sh—y, horrible fight.“

Soon, though, they learned what the problem was: a serious staph infection.

Sanchez woke up the day after the fight and had a hole in his thigh “the size of a coffee cup,” according to White.

Despite the seriousness of the problem, White said he expects Sanchez back in the UFC soon and looks forward to his fight.

Even with the recent defeat, the now 17-1 fighter (6-1 in the UFC) remains one of the welterweight division’s top contenders. Sanchez is also one of the organization’s most marketable fighters and could become a key centerpiece to the UFC’s move into the Southwest and Mexico.

White recently stated that the UFC would put on a show in Mexico in early to mid-summer 2008.

RYAN BENNETT RADIO TRIBUTE TONIGHT
Thursday, May 31, 2007 - MMAWeeklyRadio.com

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ryan Bennett was the co-founder of MMAWeekly.com. On May 31, 2006, our good friend and mentor died in a tragic car accident that involved not only him, but also his wife and four young children.

To be sure, Tonya and the kids have struggled both physically and mentally throughout this past year, but with the strength and support of a strong family and a true allegiance of friends, they persevere for they were the heart of Ryan’s life. Not a day would pass that he wasn’t filled with stories about his family with a huge smile on his face.

The family is still struggling to cope financially as Tonya has had to endure several surgeries with another planned for later this year. The Ryan Bennett Memorial Fund was set up to help ease this burden and is still a wonderful way to honor Ryan.

Although it has been one year since Ryan’s passing, it is not a day for mourning. Today, May 31, 2007, is a day not to mark Ryan’s death, but a day to celebrate has life. For celebrating life is something that Ryan did each and every day that he was alive.

This one year of time has given us the opportunity to truly reflect on the man that Ryan was and the man that he is, living on through all of us who knew him. He was a husband, a father, a son, a brother, an uncle, a friend, a mentor, a jokester, a leader, an inspiration… Ryan was all these things and so much more. If the true measure of a man is how he is remembered when he is gone then Ryan Bennett was truly one of the greatest.

In tribute to the life of our friend, MMAWeekly Radio tonight is broadcasting a special 2-hour radio tribute to Ryan Bennett. Joining co-hosts Damon Martin and Jeff Cain for the entire broadcast is Ryan’s original radio co-host Frank Trigg. There will be a few surprises, a few trips down memory lane with clips from “The Hitman” on the original MMAWeekly Radio, several fighters and friends will be live on the line to talk about Ryan, and more as we celebrate his life.

Be sure to tune in early for tonight’s 2-hour broadcast at 5pm PT / 8pm ET LIVE on MMAWeeklyRadio.com.

You didn't...but your shot at "BTT guys" and Crocop makes it look like you're defending the decision to put Filho in the WEC. What was your point exactly? We all know that anybody can lose a fight...that does mean he shouldn't be in the UFC.

You don't have to agree with my opinion that Filho is better than 90% of UFC fighters, but he IS the #3 MW in the world and has no business in the UFC minor leagues. I just threw out 90% as a number...it's probably higher than that actually. I don't really see how you can argue otherwise...especially if you want to talk about his division only. It's an OPINION, not an assumption. There are no guarantees. Bottom line: Filho in the WEC is a joke. He'll get VERY little exposure to US fans there. It's pointless and combined with the report that Franklin turned down a fight with him at UFC 72, it screams of Dana protecting Franklin. Meanwhile we get Leben vs Starnes on PPV cards...

Everybody and their dog (I wonder what YOU said when he signed??) ASSUMED that Crocop would roll thru the HW division as it existed at that time. Few picked Gonzaga to win that fight (you didn't either).

Did anyone make him sign with the WEC? Did he not do this by his own volition? If Dana was protecting Franklin, then why was he approached with Filho as an opponent in the first place? You could interpret it as Dana protecting Franklin, where I can interpret it as Zuffa trying to give the WEC some talent in their stock. I don't know either way, so I won't make a definative statement.

Everybody and their dog (I wonder what YOU said when he signed??) ASSUMED that Crocop would roll thru the HW division as it existed at that time. Few picked Gonzaga to win that fight (you didn't either).

First, I never said Cro Cop would have rolled through the division. And if you remember my friend, I was one of the few on this and most other boards that picked Couture to beat Sylvia, and again picked Couture to beat Cro Cop and defend his belt, should they have faced each other in a title bout. Filho going to the WEC after Franklin told Dana he wouldn't take a fight with him at UFC 72 = Dana protecting him, IMO. All the rumors prior to that were that Filho was coming to the UFC...

I'm all for stocking some talent in the WEC. But not top 5 fighters...POINTLESS.

When CC signed, Randy wasn't even a HW again. And he wasn't a HW that had just dominated Tim Sylvia especially...

You did pick Couture over CC after UFC 68...mostly for the sake of supporting him... ;)

I know all of the odds would be against Randy, but I'll go ahead and pick him right now just for the sake of supporting the most decorated and respected MMA fighter of all time, along with me believing he has a chance of winning.

Crocop will be back...maybe they'll give him a couple warm-up fights in the WEC so he can work his way back to the big show. Maybe we'll get to see Randy vs CC yet...

That statement was about the 90% number that I threw out...

Here's the UFC stable of MW's...
http://www.ufc.com/index.cfm?fa=fighter.AllFighters&did=3

50 total...call it 40 since I'm sure there are some not under contract right now.

Filho wouldn't be in the top 4 (10%) of the division?? Silva, Franklin, Marquardt, Okami...??? He's right there with those guys at a minimum.

This was the statement I took a shot at

He'd roll thru the division IMO...

Filho going to the WEC after Franklin told Dana he wouldn't take a fight with him at UFC 72 = Dana protecting him, IMO. All the rumors prior to that were that Filho was coming to the UFC...

I think if it was Dana's intention to protect Rich, he wouldn't have offered him as an opponent in the 1st place.

I'm all for stocking some talent in the WEC. But not top 5 fighters...POINTLESS.

Not if Filho is a lock for the belt.

When CC signed, Randy wasn't even a HW again. And he wasn't a HW that had just dominated Tim Sylvia especially...

Did you ever find where I proclaimed Cro Cop would get the belt? I never thought it was a sure thing, like so many did. In fact, I was hoping he would face AA on his road to earn a possible title fight.

You did pick Couture over CC after UFC 68...mostly for the sake of supporting him... ;)

Morton KO'd in MMA debut; suspended after refusing to provide urine sample

Johnnie Morton's transition from the NFL to Mixed Martial Arts didn't go as planned for the former wide receiver.

Morton

Morton, 35, was knocked out just 38 seconds into the first round of his match against Bernard Ackah on Saturday night and then was suspended by the California State Athletic Commission after refusing to supply a urine sample for drug testing.

Morton wasn't available to comment on the fight or the suspension, the Los Angeles Times reported.

Morton was fighting on a K-1/Elite XC Dynamite!! USA card at the L.A. Memorial Coliseum. He was put in a neck splint and taken to California Hospital in Los Angeles for observation but was able to flash a victory sign to the crowd before leaving the ring on a stretcher.

"How many people who would do what he did, stepping into the NFL of MMA and putting it all on the line," Morton's trainer, Mike Guymon told the Times.

Morton only trained for two months for his MMA debut, but Guymon said Morton was ready for the fight.

"When you want to jump into something, you jump into something," Guymon told the Times. "I've been fighting for 10 years and I still don't feel like I'm prepared."

Ackah, however, doesn't think Morton's ready for the big time yet.

"He needs more experience," he told the Times.

Morton had four 1,000-yard receiving seasons in his 12-year career with the Lions, Chiefs and 49ers. He retired from the NFL after the 2005 season.

He dropped gloves and leaned right into the punch, basic boxing 101 mistake. He's lucky he still has a head attached to his shoulders. If he faced a true stiker he might be in a coma. This is the danger of all of these chaotic MMA start ups going on right now.

I know K-1 is far from a start up but what business did Mortan have in the ring? So they run like one.

If anything, the Morton fight should be a cautionary tale about the respect the sport demands from its competitors. It says a lot that a world class athelete like an NFL player, who's accustomed to getting hit, can get destroyed so severely and easily.
You guys are right though. It's ridiculous that Morton would get a match on such a large show with no experience and so little training. I hope this kind of thing doesn't become a trend.

News and notes

• The UFC is still trying to hammer out a deal with Pride heavyweight champion Fedor Emelianenko. Talks are said to be going reasonably well but there have been some hangups. The biggest issue has been dealing with all of the people he's affiliated with. His representatives want special concessions, and there is a push to get some of the fighters who train with him contracts as well.

He's supposed to fight in a combat sambo match in Sept...that shit won't fly with Dana I'm sure. It was surprising to me that he was fighting in a sambo match a couple weeks before one of his Pride fights. Combat sambo is full on just like MMA for the most part. Agree. Although Fabricio Werdum did fight in Abu Dhabi, I know thats not as tough as MMA or for your example, Sambo, but it is still very possible to hyperextend or tear every ligament imaginable. I was really surprised by that. And correct me if I am wrong but I believe it was one of Dana's standard 3 fight deals for new but veteran fighters.

Combat Sambo is different than Sambo (ie, sport sambo). It's Sambo plus striking...with headgear and pads on the legs.

From Wiki:
Although it was originally a single system, there are now four generally recognized versions of Sambo:

Sport Sambo (Borba Sambo) is stylistically similar to amateur wrestling or Judo. The competition is similar to Judo, but with some differences in rules, protocol, and uniform. For example, in contrast with Judo, Sambo allows all types of leg locks, while not allowing chokeholds.

Self-defense Sambo, which is similar to Aikijutsu, jujitsu or Aikido, and is based on self-defense application, such as defending against attacks by both armed and unarmed attackers.

Combat Sambo (Russian: Boyevoye Sambo). Utilized and developed for the military, this is arguably the root of Sambo as it is now known, and includes practice with weapons and disarming techniques. Competition in combat sambo resembles older forms of judo and modern mixed martial arts, including extensive forms of striking and grappling.

Special Sambo - developed for Army Special Forces and Rapid Reaction Police (Militsija) teams and other law enforcement formations. The "Special Sambo" version differ from team to team due to different tasks and aims, however the base of any special system developed in that field is of course Sambo.

http://www.mmanews.com/ufc/Josh-Koscheck-Posts-Huge-Rant-About-UFC-Pay.html

UFC and boxing ppv dollars?

UFC Prez Dana White is always quick to pull out the “boxing promoters are crooked” line during his frequent discussions about boxing. I would argue that the UFC Czar is just as crooked.

Why did Chuck Liddell and Rampage Jackson only make about $500,000 for their recent UFC 72 showdown. UFC 72 did about 1 million pay per view buys at $40 a pop, Zuffa made 40 million alone in ppv dollars. Not to mention the live gate, over seas viewing rights, and sponsors that ponied up money for this fight. Why do UFC fighters get such a small piece of the pie in a sport that’s supposedly on the upswing? With the rise in of popularity of the UFC why aren’t their fighters paid MUCH more.

I’m not saying there aren’t boxing promoters that don’t short change their fighters, but boxers can make alot more money over a career than a UFC fighter can. Shannon Briggs was paid 1.8 million for his meaningless title defense against Sultan Ibragimov last weekend. GO ahead UFC fans, defend your boy Dana White.Additional Details

Nice try, as demand for the sport builds up so should the fighters salaries. I’m not buying that one. Zuffa is keeping as much as they can of the 100 million they made for UFC 72. They should be ashamed paying two of their top fighters $500,000.

Best answer

White and the UFC basically want to pay the fighters like a third rate sport but at the same time want to claim to be a legitimate sport. The average UFC fighter doesn’t even make a middle class living it is ridiculous. Even the elite MMA fighters are way behind other professional sports.
White wants to say that Mayweather wouldn’t make it in the UFC and he is right Mayweather wouldn’t step in the UFC ring for the peanuts they pay. Why would he take about 1/20th of his normal pay?

UFC fans are in serious denial about this issues. They will say things like well athletes shouldn’t make that kind of money. Well somebody is making it so why should it all go to the promoters? Or they will say that it takes time but again the revenues MMA is generating is huge so it is a matter of changing the structure not time.

UFC fighters need some kind of union to make a larger share of the pie since it is the fighter that literally rolls the dice with his future health and even his life not the promoters.

LEONARD
06-06-2007, 03:00 PM
The pay is definitely low overall, but Chuck and Rampage shouldn't be the target if somebody is trying to make that point. They'll both end up in the $2M-$3M range if the PPV buys is along the lines of UFC 66 (Chuck and Tito both got around $3M before it was all said and done).

Evan
06-06-2007, 03:37 PM
Not to alibi for the UFC but they more than any other sport re-invest the money back into the growth of MMA so its not like there is piles of money stacked in corners of their head office.

But the fighters certainly should share more of the money.

As far as a union...it will never happen. Not ever.

Following his destruction of Chuck Liddell at UFC 71, Quinton Jackson was immediately introduced to his next opponent, Dan Henderson. The Ultimate Fighting Championship introduced Henderson, the current Pride 185-pound and 205-pound champion, as its latest marquee acquisition and the first challenger to Jackson’s light heavyweight title.

Yesterday on CBS 2 in Los Angeles, Jackson confirmed that his fight with Henderson would take place later this year when the UFC returns to England. Speaking to reporter Jim Hill, Jackson noted, “I have to fight September 8th in London with the champion of Japan [Henderson]. He has the belt that I was trying to go for that I never got.”

UFC 75, planned for September 8th, will be the promotion’s third event of the year in Europe. Although the UFC hasn’t yet officially confirmed the event, Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic has mentioned that he will be fighting on the card, and other rumored participants include Michael Bisping, Alessio Sakara, Jess Liaudin, and Dennis Siver.

"Despite Report, Stover Might Fight Morrison"
http://www.sherdog.com/news/articles.asp?n_id=7837

Following a report Friday evening by the Arizona Republic in which Tommy Morrison's former agent said the boxer is HIV positive, John Stover told Sherdog.com that he remains undecided about fighting Morrison in a mixed martial arts bout Saturday at Cliff Castle Casino in Camp Verde, Ariz.

"Today [promoters] assured me on and on that [Morrison] tested negative and they said he's been tested 15 times over the past few years and he tested negative each time," said Stover, a six-foot-two, 340-pound fighter out of Pine Ridge, South Dakota.

"I don't know what to do other than believe them, because why would they lie to me, especially about something like that?" he continued. "Because if he and I were to fight and he was positive then that would be a felony. What do they call it? Attempted manslaughter."

According to the report published on the Republic Web site, Morrison's former agent Randy Lang said Morrison, 38, has tested positive for HIV antibodies.

"If they have proof of that test and then they're trying to push this thing through, then of course that needs to be exposed," Stover's manager, Mike Bridge, told Sherdog.com late Friday.

Since being driven out of boxing after a positive HIV test in 1996, Morrison has repeated claims that the test conducted by the Nevada State Athletic Commission was a false-positive, and he is free of the virus that causes AIDS.

Jay, Oklahoma's Morrison stayed out of the ring for 11 years before attempting to return to boxing this January. A hand injury ended that bid, and his license application to the Arizona State Athletic Commission was subsequently pulled back before blood work could be returned.

On Feb. 22, 2007, Morrison fought John Castle in a four-round bout after West Virginia licensed him based largely on documents that Lang said were fraudulent, or tests in which blood samples were switched.

Lang said he stopped working for Morrison three days after the Feb. fight because the boxer and his promoter, Peter McKinn, who is running Saturday's fight in Ariz., misrepresented the results of tests conducted in front him and Arizona State Athletic Commission Executive Officer Joe Montano.

McKinn told the Republic that he was never in West Virginia during Morrison's licensing process and that all documents supplied to the commission came from Lang.

Calls from Sherdog.com to McKinn were not immediately returned.

Stover, a self-diagnosed brawler with a penchant for bloody fights, told Sherdog Radio on Friday afternoon that he was under the impression the fight, intended to be Morrison's MMA debut, fell under the jurisdiction of the Arizona State Athletic Commission.

"I came into this with what my promoter told me," he said.

Informed that blood, heart and eye exams were not going to be administered because the bout was taking place on Yavapai-Apache Nation land, which falls outside the jurisdiction of the Arizona Commission, Stover said, "I'm not ready to commit suicide or something like that."

The heavyweights finally met Friday evening during weigh-ins for the controversial bout. They shook hands and took pictures before Morrison left.

"It's kind of flip-floppy right now," said Bridge. "We'll wait to see what tomorrow brings. [Stover's] kind of freaking out about it because we're getting mixed signals.

"As far as I know, the fight's still on."

http://sprawlnbrawl.blogspot.com/2007/06/account-of-morrison-fight.html

"Despite a set of last-minute rules revisions tailored to Morrison’s fighting style – no grounding, and Morrison allowed to wear boxing footwear – Morrison failed to offer a performance that captivated those in attendance, appearing initially sloppy and befuddled by MMA rules that did not lead to immediate breaks. In fact, Tommy Morrison handily lost the fight’s first minute.

For the entirety of the fight’s last 90 seconds, and for eight minutes after that, however, the victorious Morrison wheezed, coughed and gasped for air – appearing more sickly than triumphant.

It was an interesting night all round – with the Arizona Republic’s esteemed boxing writer Norm Frauenheim initially removed from ringside because of a report published Saturday morning about Morrison’s probable HIV-positive condition – and with Morrison’s initial entrance to the ring delayed longer than any MMA fans could recall an entrance ever being delayed."

There is going to be so many of these joke MMA events from here on out as everyone tries to cash in.

Not to be morbid but the first MMA paralyzation and death is right around the corner now. It will happen when two guys fight that have no business wearing 4oz gloves. Everyone is trying to fast to get into this and so many are not qualified.

We had two of these in one week, K-1 with Morton and that piece of garbage with Tommy. It will only get worse.

You're probably right...and then the media will over-react and the UFC will be getting heat again.

And when it happens, we will then see just how good Dana is with the media and we will see how much pull he has with the NSAC. He may very well succeed in forcing some nearly impossible "licenses" qualifications on having mma fights that smaller shows can't pull off thereby eliminating a lot of shows unless their at some Indian reservation.

An interesting article on Sherdog this morning...

Jackson: PRIDE Offered Bonus to Lose
Tuesday, June 12, 2007
by Sherdog.com Staff

Prior to making his PRIDE debut against Kazushi Sakuraba (Pictures) in July 2001, Quinton Jackson (Pictures) said PRIDE executives offered to pay him a $2000 bonus if he lost by knockout or submission and did not tap.

Speaking with MMA Today before his UFC light heavyweight championship winning performance, Jackson said he signed to fight for $10,000, but alleged that PRIDE executives, whom he said "screwed" him over, offered $12,000 if he was finished in the ring by the Japanese star.

"I'm never the type of fighter that would lose for money," Jackson said. "I don't do that. But they told me, 'If you win this fight, you get $10,000.' But they told me -- these are like the two people from PRIDE who got fired recently, I don't know if the president of PRIDE knew about it -- but they told me themselves: 'If you lose by knockout or submission and you don't tap, you get $12,000.'

"I said, 'But what if I knock him out?' and they said 'You get $10,000.' Then I understood what was going on. This was my first time fighting in the big show in Japan and I learned sometimes they wanted the other guy to win."

After slamming the smaller Sakuraba several times and nearly lifting out of the ring over the top rope, Jackson, who took the fight on short notice, finally succumbed to Sakuraba after getting caught in a choke.

"I knew it was going to be tough for me to win that fight, so I went out there and gave it my best anyways to get my $10,000," Jackson said.

DSE recently relinquished control of PRIDE when it sold the company to UFC owner Lorenzo Fertitta.

Evan
06-12-2007, 10:38 AM
Not surprised. Tito has alluded to the same problem. If I remember right I believe he said if its a decision and its a popular Japanese fighter you aren't winning.

Now I wonder if the UFC asked him to say this, I wonder if they are simply going to bury PRIDE and keep the video library. Zuffa can’t afford to be associated with something that has fixed fights, especially in their infancy. The longer it goes on without PRIDE having the show the lesser chance they have of being successful in Japan ever again. Clock is ticking on them.

LEONARD
06-12-2007, 12:08 PM

And immediately following UFC Fight Night, the UFC 72 Countdown premiers at 11pm ET, trailed by a rerun of The Ultimate Fighter.

Also premiering tonight is the Countdown to Shamrock vs. Baroni on Showtime at 8:30pm ET. Frank Shamrock vs. Phil Baroni headlines the June 22nd Strikeforce event on pay-per-view.

Bodog Fight also airs a new special episode on Ion. Tonight's episode features four previously non-televised undercard bouts from the Fedor Emelianenko vs. Matt Lindland pay-per-view including fighters Julie Kedzie, Amar Suloev, and Ray Steinbess.

Not to be left out, mixed martial arts continues its takeover of the Versus network tonight with replays of Tapout at 8pm and 11pm ET and a replay of World Extreme Cagefighting 28, featuring Urijah Faber vs. Chance Farrar, at 9pm ET.

************************************************** **

Even before Anderson Silva captured the Ultimate Fighting Championship middleweight belt with a brutal knockout of then champion Rich Franklin, it was clear that the friendship between Silva and the Nogueira brothers was very strong. Silva lives in Curitiba, Brazil and used to go to Nogueira’s house in Rio de Janeiro all the time to train.

After Silva won the middleweight championship, he was able to put UFC President Dana White and Nogueira in contact with each other and a contract followed shortly thereafter. On May 11th, Nogueira stated, “I received the invite to fight at the UFC when I came to the U.S. to corner Roan Jucăo at UFC Fight Night. I have followed Anderson and Eddie’s [Soares, Anderson’s manager] advice to sign the contract with Dana White. So I am very happy with the situation.”

Nogueira signed the UFC contract without the help of BTT saying in an interview with Marcelo Alonso of Tatame, “I’m 30 years old and able to negotiate my own stuffs. I know what is good to me.” But he didn’t discount his training. “BTT is an excellent place for me to train.”

That was about a month ago. It appears that things have taken a downward turn since then. The next issue of Tatame will focus on the division at BTT.

Specifically addressing the situation with Nogueira, Murilo Bustamante of BTT commented to Tatame, “I am more than a month in trying to clear things up, to talk to him. If he is upset, he should come to me. This would be the right way to do things, besides that, we’ve been friends forever. He should give me a chance to clear things up in the name of our friendship.”

For his part, it appears that Nogueira isn’t in any rush to take Bustamante up on his comments. Also speaking with Tatame, Nogueira stated, “I don’t wanna talk about it. Let them talk. Murilo stated that he doesn’t know if BTT will have me back. I will let them think for a while.”

And at that, it doesn’t appear that a resolution is soon in the offing.

While there was some speculation that Nogueira may be going to the newly formed Black House team to join Anderson Silva, Vitor Belfort, and Ryoto Machida, among others that is not entirely clear. Nogueira has trained there with Silva, but does have an entire training structure in his house where he lives with his brother Antonio Rogerio Nogueira, Jeferson Feijăo and professional boxer Lino Barros.

Royce shamed the family name!!!!!!

Thursday, June 14, 2007
by Josh Gross ([email protected])

Mixed martial arts icon Royce Gracie (Pictures), best known as the slender gi-wearing Brazilian who twisted oversized competitors into knots during the early days of the Ultimate Fighting Championship, tested positive for traces of Nandrolone, a commonly used anabolic steroid, following his decision win over Kazushi Sakuraba (Pictures), June 2 in Los Angeles, the California State Athletic Commission revealed Thursday.

Gracie (14-3-3) has been suspended from June 2, 2007 through May 30, 2008, and is fined $2,500, the maximum penalty by the CSAC. The 40-year-old member of the legendary fighting family has until July 13 to appeal the suspension to the CSAC.

Calls to Gracie's representatives were not immediately returned.

Anderson Silva and Big Nog sparring...going at it pretty hard, Silva with no headgear.

http://www.tatametv.com.br/videos/029.htm

Basically one of the coaches explains that they're working on Nog's stand-up, and that he wants to go for a KO in his UFC debut against Herring, taking the fight to the ground will be his last option. The guy in the background making the noises is deaf, he's Bebel's nephew(BJJ coach for BTT).

Who is this Uriah Faber kid?

I have been watching WEC pretty damn regularly, and the fights are pretty damn good.

He seems to be fighting some good competition, but he is just trashing them with ease.

Too bad UFC doesnt have a featherweight division.

Urijah is amazing at his weight and I would love to see him take on some of the Japanese in his peer class.

A bit of levity for your day:

"I happen to f*cking hate golf. Golf is the most useless f*cking sport of all time. It's a waste of f*cking time. It's a waste of f*cking land. It's a waste of everything. Homeless people are sleeping in the streets, and these rich dicks are out there golfing. Give me a f*cking break. They ought to build houses for the homeless on all the golf courses."

-Dana White. Not the funniest quote, but since I hate golf I laughed my ass off.

McCullough on MMA

Options: Email Article | Printer Friendly

June 27, 2007
by Paul Concannon (Photo by William Cherry) ([email protected])

With his impenetrable jaw and endless punch volume, Wayne "The Pocket Rocket" McCullough featured in some of the most title thrilling boxing bouts in recent memory. After a career spent mixing it up with the likes of Erik Morales and Naseem Hamed without so much as a backward step or splash to the canvas, McCullough knows a thing or two about what makes up the mettle of fighting men.

Wayne still loves his boxing through and through, but along with his passion for the sport that made him famous, he shares an equal and endearing zeal for the booming sport of mixed martial arts.

With the UFC's recent expansion into Europe with shows in Manchester, Belfast and later this year, London, along with ever-increasing popularity of home-grown MMA promotions such as Cage Rage, McCullough will soon play his own official part of the UFC's development on these shores.

Boxing versus MMA? The former WBC bantamweight champion and Olympic silver medallist feels there is little point in choosing, when you can have both.

Hi Wayne, tell us a little about your connection with the UFC?

McCullough: Well, I have known (UFC president) Dana White and (UFC owner) Lorenzo Fertitta since ‘94-‘95, when Dana was heavily involved in boxing and Lorenzo was part of the (Nevada) Boxing Commission. I did go quite a while without seeing Dana, but we re-acquainted back in 2000 and it was then that he told me he was involved in the sport of MMA. I was glad to see that as he's a guy that works hard; he did when he was involved in boxing, and now he's doing the same for MMA not just in here in the States, but internationally now, too. I understand that the crowd in Belfast (for June 16's UFC 72 card) was the biggest ever in the Odyssey Arena's history, that's pretty amazing.

Wayne, what specifically will you being doing for the UFC, will you be required to do commentary?

No, not as such; Dana White asked me to get involved with respect of being a European face of things while the UFC expand into Europe. Like I said, he's known me since my boxing days -- before I was a champion and afterwards too -- and one of the things he told me was that being a world champion never changed me. But like I said to him, why should I change? In truth, his success in MMA hasn't changed him either, though he did use to have hair!

So, are you aware of what will be involved?

No, I was supposed to sit down with the UFC in Belfast (to talk through the details) but in the end, a fight I had in Dublin that weekend fell through, so, as it turned out, I stayed here in the U.S.

What happened?

Well I was supposed to fight in Dublin, and then attend the UFC show in Belfast later in the evening. About half a dozen guys turned fight down fights against me so they brought a Mexican guy who had a so-so record, so I wasn't overly happy about him as an opponent. But that's not the point. OK, I was supposed to be leaving on the Wednesday of the week beforehand but the promoter couldn't confirm the guy was leaving Mexico, so I thought I'm not going over if they can't guarantee me an opponent. Then we heard there was potential visa issues, and rumour had it that the guy didn't have a passport and had never fought outside Mexico, so that said, it was hardly the right mental preparation for a fight apparently just nine days off.

Did you get a chance to see the UFC show on TV? If so what were your thoughts?

I knew Rich Franklin (Pictures) (former UFC middleweight champion) was in a tough fight but he came through. I knew he would have a tough time with Yushin Okami (Pictures), who's one of those guys with immense natural strength, but he (Okami) gave away the first round, and despite a tough third round, Rich came through it in the end. It was good to see Forrest Griffin (Pictures) get back on track with a win, too. He's never in a bad fight and takes a few to land his own. He's in a war in almost all of his fights.

Griffin's style is likely one you can relate too, then?

Yes indeed, and Forrest also mentioned he was Irish, which I had no idea about beforehand.

What do did you make of the inclusion of local fighters Colin Robinson and Steve Lynch on the Belfast show?

Well, the funny thing about that is I had no idea there even were any Irish MMA fighters. That's why another thing that shows me the UFC is being promoted the right way: last week two Irish guys fought on an MMA event over in Belfast, and I was able to read about them over here in the U.S.

In your estimation, can boxing learn from the way the UFC promotes its shows?

Well, let me give you an example, in my last fight (a WBC super bantamweight title bout Oscar Larios), I was on the same card as Bernard Hopkins against Jermain Taylor on a show promoted by Oscar De La Hoya's Golden Boy Promotions right here in Vegas. Now here I was, the co-main event in a rematch of a world title fight, fighting in a city I have live in for 14 years, where I am well known, and there wasn't even a picture of me on the poster. Here in my garage I have a big welterweight boxer called Fransisco Santana working out as we speak. In his last fight in Vegas with Goosen Tutor Promotions they weren't going to put him on the card, I said to them, put him on the card. Of course nobody in boxing will be really interested until he is like 20-0. My wife Cheryl manages him and she contacted some of the top journalists in America to do a piece on Francisco, and it was no problem, one guy even did a whole Q & A with him, and all she had to do was ask, as a result he got more publicity than the main event. I guarantee Goosen wasn't going to do that for him. My point is that in the UFC, when a kid is starting off, he can be 4-0 and he's already get that publicity. Next up for Francisco is a spot on the Antonio Margarito-Paul Williams (WBO welterweight title bout) -- but more often than not, he would have to 20-0 before anyone paid any attention.

Why do you think that is?

The problem with boxing is that you need to win an Olympic medal. I won a silver medal so people knew who I was over here (in the US). If you don't have the medal you won't get TV good exposure. In MMA there is no Olympics and that's the difference. If I didn't win an Olympic medal I wouldn't have been a fighter, I would likely be a regular guy back home. Take Amir Khan, he's getting a big build-up because of his silver medal, without that he wouldn't be getting anywhere near the same level of exposure.

It seems amazing that you didn't make the poster for a double-header world title bill you were featured on.

Exactly, I had loads of friends turn up for the show who were there to just see me fight, they left after my bout with Larrios, so, if De La Hoya had done that bit more, realistically, he could have sold an extra 4,000 or so tickets for the show on a card that ultimately had disappointing box office turnout.

When did your interest in MMA begin?

Whenever I fought here (in Vegas) in 2002 a friend of mine, Jim Molloy, had mentioned the UFC to me a few times, so going back some three years ago I went to first UFC card in Vegas to see Tito Ortiz (Pictures).

How did you feel it compared to attending a boxing card?

I had a great time at the event. It was so different from boxing. They filled the arena from the first bout to the last, in boxing the arena is often half-empty before and after the main event, but the arena was full from the first fight to the last. This is what boxing doesn't do, a four-round or six-round fighter from the game just doesn't get the same level of exposure that guys get in the UFC.

Whether it's their first bout or last, each fighter gets a big build-up, there's an opportunity for them to do some talking on the big screens, so even if you know nothing about them beforehand, you get an opportunity to hear a bio of them and their thoughts on the fight, which gives the fans an opportunity to find out more about them, raising the interest about the fighter and the fight.

Comparatively with boxing undercards, do you feel there's a quality issue (when compared to MMA undercards)?

Well, on one of the recent UFC events, it was so well matched four underdogs from five fights came through and won their bouts. In MMA a guy can be 10-4 and still be a good fighter, even a top prospect. Wayne, the general consensus is that top quality matchmaking isn't happening often enough in boxing, what do you think?

Well take the recent Oscar De La Hoya versus Floyd Mayweather Jr. fight. That was a huge event, matching two tops fighters, but in reality, it was a disappointing fight, though having said that the recent Miguel Cotto versus Zab Judah was a throwback bout, like (Diego) Corrales and (Jose Luis) Castillo I. I said to Dana White that boxing and the UFC are different sports. Unfortunately, boxing is killing itself. In boxing we have guys wanting 15 million before they will step into the ring. That's not my style. I am a throwback. I came back from my couple of years off and was boxing for 40 grand a fight. I came back because I love to fight.

As someone who knows about both sports Wayne, you must be aware of the misconceptions that come from followers of both sports, in fact the boxing vs. MMA debate runs from the bars and guestbooks to the very front line of the boxing media, with the majority of barbs being shot from boxing, including negative comments on MMA from top level boxers like Mayweather Jr. Could you comment a little on that for me?

I think boxing is afraid of MMA. I don't get why so many people cannot make the separation between the two sports, and the two sports can't support each other; they are two different sports. I am one of the few boxers who actively supports and speaks out for MMA. So many boxers run MMA down, but MMA fighters don't disrespect boxing.

On the same subject, some of the less-educated uttering we hear and read about includes boxer A would easily beat MMA fighter B and vice versa -- if you had the opportunity to educate people in that regard, how would you describe a likely outcome between a top level boxer against a top level MMA fighter fighting each other at there own sports?

They are different sports; it is like comparing soccer and rugby. In MMA you can punch, kick, elbow and grapple. With MMA, the gloves are half the size of the gloves in boxing too. I'm an old street fighter, and I love those smaller gloves. It's a pity I wasn't bigger. I'm too small; if I were big enough I would learn jiu-jitsu and wrestling and take part. They (MMA and boxing) are two different sports and you can't compare the two things. I'm never going to say one is better than the other. They are both different, and the rules are different. If a boxer went in there to box a UFC guy, he likely knock him out with one punch, but what happens if an MMA gets hold of me? I am done!

It works both ways. Boxing is just going to be a step up for the UFC guys when it comes to striking only. Chuck Liddell (Pictures) is one of the best guys on his feet in MMA, you know, he trains to fight on his feet. If you turn that round I have no experience except for being a street fighter when I was younger, I'm not going to I know how tough they (MMA fighters) are. I understand what it takes to be a professional boxer, not an MMA fighter. I'm a football fan. I support Liverpool! I love boxing, and MMA is a separate sport. Why can't I support MMA and boxing as well?

What do you see as a good way forward to educating boxing people about the concept of MMA elements like jiu-jitsu, Muay Thai and wrestling?

Get and try it -- instead of talking about it, try it and then respect it as a different sport. Even with something like watching WWF wrestling, people are quick to condemn that, but would you try it? Those guys are hurting each other and many people don't understand that.

Wayne you are sat home on a Saturday night, and you have a choice of PPV options, you could watch say a De La Hoya vs. Mayweather or perhaps a Couture vs. Emelianenko -- what would you choice be?

Truth is, I'm not going to chose one over the other, when I look at the likes of Mayweather. He has so much skill he doesn't need to be involved in brutal fights, he's a smart business man and skilled boxer, so when I see him, I look at his skill; I don't turn him on for fight-of-the-year type wars. When you get fights with the likes of Liddell, Couture, Ortiz, those guys are trying to kill each other. Boxing hasn't treated me bad; some people in boxing have, but not boxing. I'm an old school boxing fan, I love fighters like Henry Armstrong, Roberto Duran, Jake Lamotta. I am 37 -- I have boxed now for 30 years, and I will be looking to fight again in August, I still love the sport and love to fight, but I'm a 100 percent supporter of sports, not just boxing and not just MMA. I love both of them.

You can ask my wife, you give me that choice: I'll buy both of those pay-per-views, and spend the whole night flicking between the two (laughs)!
