Back in the Summer of 2004, as the Lakers were looking to trade Shaq, I remember having a discussion with a friend of mine, where I said that the best trading partner for the Lakers were clearly the Mavs. At that point the Mavericks still had Finley on his huge contract, and had to decide about resigning Steve Nash. Even without resigning Nash, the Mavs could have offered some combination of Finley/Stackhouse/Terry + Howard/Harris + Dampier + Future Pick/Filler for Shaq, which I think would have given the Lakers more depth and youth, and the Mavs an inside presence. The resigning of Nash makes things even more interesting, completely reshaping the landscape of the NBA today, with Nash on the Lakers w/Kobe, or on the Mavs with Shaq and Dirk.

So, given the way things turned out over the last three years, Lakers and Mavs fans, would you go back and do a deal like this now, knowing what you know? What would the NBA look like today? Thoughts?
