View Full Version : Future of Dallas/SA Rivalry

I was thinking, and after the choke job to GS last night, will anyone here ever take the Mavs seriously again? Say the first game we play them next year, even if the Spurs lose do we care? Will Mav fans still take trash during the regular season? I know a Dallas-SA matchup anytime not in the playoffs will just be another game from now on because I dont think their time will be the same as 06 ever again after what they just suffered through.

of course there would still be a rivalry as long as both the teams are from texas and from the 06 playoffs...same thing if the spurs lost in the first round to the nuggets...i still wouldnt disreguard them as an elite team...and i know any smart spurs fan would say the same about dallas

Rivalry ? Let's compare jewelry. Be afraid.
Legend has it, we almost swept your asses 2 years ago when we eventually won our 3rd Championship.

How many times have the Suns lost in the NBA Finals? Twice? Remind me again how many times they've won it? I can't tell from this stat sheet I'm looking at. You see, sometimes it's hard for me to read about other teams' histories what with all the glare from those three championship trophies shining in my eyes.

We had a reason to hate the Lakers and the Mavs. The Suns aren't really THAT hateable. In fact, I actually like the Suns (Nash, Amare and Marion count among my favorite non-Spurs players). So there's no real rivalry here that can compare to the Mavs or the Lakers. Sorry.

Earlier in the year I said SA/Dallas was the top rivalry, but now at the end of the season where the truth came out again, it now seems the only real rival the Spurs have had are the Lakers:
1999: The Spurs beat the Lakers 4-0 to close out the Lakers in their final playoff series at the Forum in LA.
2001: Lakers sweep the Spurs.
2002: Lakers close out the Spurs in their final playoff game at the Alamodome.
2003: The Spurs become the first team to beat the Lakers while at their new home, the Staples Center, ending the Lakers 2000-2003 title run.
2004: The rivalry ends, With Fisher's 0.4 shot closing out the 5 year rivalry. Shaq leaves town, and the new Lakers begin.
For five NBA seasons from 1999-2003, the Lakers and Spurs were the only NBA champions, and eliminated each other whenever each team won the title except for 2000 with Duncan out. The most significant title was the 2003 elimination and end of the Lakers dynasty.
The Mavericks can't be included in any rivalry if they haven't won an NBA championship. Last year's Semifinals win over SA was a mistake, as they clearly shouldn't have advanced and were the wrong team to advance (Only a mediocre 8-10 in the playoffs since that Game 7 victory in SA)
the best thing i can say is in 24 hours there have been 6 pages worth of threads in the NBA news forum after the Mavs lost last night.

Dallas is a different type of rivalry, because LA always had what we wanted - or we always had what they wanted. Dallas is a rivalry, but not as heated or intense... but I still hate them.

You wish the Suns could claim the Spurs as a rival, your team is not even worth mentioning in a discussion about rivalries. The Suns have never done anything to even threaten us in a playoff series, they're no more of a rival to us than Seattle is. :wakeup

Suns will never be that same type of heated rivalry, even if they were to beat us--which I still am not all that worried about going into this series-- because there's a lot of overlap in terms of respecting players' games from fans on both sides. I love it when Spurs play the Suns, because our big 3 > their big 3.
(Except the Suns homers hate Manu, but half of them will admit vocally they want him in their jersey.)

that reminds me of a joke:
http://www.netfunny.com/rhf/jokes/88q4/8772.3.html
Three bulls -- a big bull, a medium sized bull, and a small bull -- were
standing by a fence one day, chewing grass and looking out over the
fields. The big one says, "See all of them cows out there? Half of
'em are mine." The medium sized one responds, "See all them cows? A
third of them are MINE." The little bull pipes up, "Hey, all the rest
of them cows are mine."
After a while the bulls notice the farmer drive up with a
truck and unload another bull -- the hugest Brahma bull these other
bulls have ever seen. The big bull stops chewing and says, with a wide-
eyed look, "He...he can have a third of my cows if he wants 'em." The
medium sized bull trembles a bit when he says "He can have HALF of my
cows if he wants them."
Then the two bigger bulls notice that the small bull is
snorting, bucking, pawing the ground, and putting on a ferocious act.
"What are you doing, fool !?" they say. The small bull replies, "I
want to make sure he knows I'm a bull!"

Ok, let's see....
Did the Spurs play 50 games in '99 while everyone else played 82? NO!
Did the Spurs have to win less than 15 playoff games in '99 to win the title? NO!
Did the Spurs barely escape with a championship in '99? NO!
And most importantly...
Would any of the fans of the other 29 teams say "1/2 title" if it was THEIR team that won the '99 championship? NO!
Quite simply, the Spurs didn't have any special treatment or unfair advantage during the 1999 lockout shortened season. They played the same amount of games as everyone else. They also DOMINATED the competition in EVERY SINGLE ROUND of the 1999 playoffs.
San Antonio v. Minnesota: 3-1
San Antonio v. Los Angeles: 4-0
San Antonio v. Portland: 4-0
San Antonio v. New York: 4-1
10 straight playoff wins in 1999.
Championship banner in the rafters.
But feel free to play that broken record all you want, Brazilian Blurr. Even a "1/2 title" for San Antonio is still infinitely more than Phoenix has.

true i was thining about the Colts. so many years of choking then they finally get a dominant defense and the best record in the league but lose the first playoff game to the Steelers. next year they fly a little under the radar and win it all.
there's not much different between this years Mavs and last year's Mavs that shouldve won the Finals. this years Mavs had the spotlight on them all year and clearly couldnt handle it

yeah, but now the pressure never goes away. regardless of what they do in the reg season, every playoff series will garner a lot of attention and worries that, regardless of the opponent, the mavs may wilt, and the players will think about it and be reminded of it.

Very interesting comment. Now, Cowboy fans like myself look at the Eagle fans just like Spurs fans do to the Mavs. Cowboys fans will tell you who our biggest rival is and that is the foreskins and always will be those sons of bitches. But at the same time, we hate the hell out of the Philly fans because of their fans. But they have never won shit in the superbowl era. They've only won 7 division titles with 5 coming this decade. BUT Cowboy fans do love beating them and do call them a rival but behind the skins', niners', packers', and steelers. What do the aformentioned teams have in common btw.

Wouldn't the Giants be a rivalry equal to or greater than the Eagles?
What about the Redskins?

Wouldn't the Giants be a rivalry equal to or greater than the Eagles?
What about the Redskins?
Most Cowboy fans outside New York never really hated the Giants but that's starting to change a bit. But we never really had a huge dislike towards the Giants. We never faced them in the playoffs consistently nor did we have any bad blood history between them. Dallas vs Philly and Washington, on the other hand, is obviously VERY VERY different.
But let's put it like this.
Washington fans hate Dallas
Dallas fans hate Washington
Philly fans LOATHE Dallas moreso than Dallas and Washington hate each other combined
Dallas practically doesn't give a shit about Philly because of their lack of hardware
Dallas number 1 rivalry will always and forever be the Washington Redskins. In fact, here is their rivals in order.
1. foreskins
2. Niners
3. Packers
4. Steelers
5. Eagles (only because of the fans, though)
32. Texans (you're just really insignificant) :lol
Washington players and Dallas players really get into the rivalry alot. We love beating the shit out of each other. But Dallas fans and Washington fans really don't care about Philly much.
