Lakers push Smush out the door

Broderick Turner

EL SEGUNDO - The Lakers already have made one decision, and that was to let Smush Parker know he won't be back next season.

"Smush is not someone that we are going to actively seek out to come back and play with us," Phil Jackson said Friday.

Parker started 162 straight games for the Lakers before he lost his job with two games left in the regular season; he didn't play much in the playoffs. His attitude had been questioned by the staff and his teammates.

A free agent as of July 1, Parker regressed in his second year in LA. He shot worse from the field (.436) and free-throw line (.646), and his points (11.1), assists (2.8), rebounds (2.5) and steals (1.5) all were down.

Anybody interested in a tall athletic lanky PG/SG with playoff experience and a bad attitude?

Anyone remember when he said that he expected to play all the time? I think it happened when Jackson benched him.

Not this Laker fan. You get what you pay for. He could be a solid backup PG though.

Good call. He has the tools to be a good PG, but he's lacking the IQ to make it happen. I'm sure some team will pick him up.

Like P&G said, Smush could be a very good backup point guard for some team. He can play when motivated. He's just an idiot! Phil lost him during the Jason Kidd talk. He knew he was the odd man out. Instead of being a professional about it and show Phil why he belongs in a Laker Uniform, he rebelled. He copped a serious attitude with the team and Phil. It was inevitable.

Have fun in the Euroleague Smush! At least Farmar has some promise, Smush is awful.

From a playing standpoint, he proved you wrong (I said he was a scrub, too). It's his fifty cent head and his bad attitude that are the reasons he's out.

Actually, Kori, you also said he was a fringe NBA player at best. Not too shabby to last as long as he did while being only a fringe NBA player at best.

I think he'd be a good match in Denver. He can start at point and allow Iverson to continue to play the 2-guard on offense but still defend the point guards as Smush take on the bigger, more athletic 2-guards on defense.

What do Spurs fans think? Is Smush someone who would respond to Pop's discipline? Cause we could use an upgrade at back up PG next year...

There's no way in hell Smush lands a starting job next season. He has a better chance of not making a team at all than being brought in as a starter.

Point guards with size will always be attractive, but it may be that Bob Hill put Smush into a permanent adversarial relationship with coaches. No need to pursue him though. There are a couple of big point guards in the draft including 6'9" Sun Yue, whom I demand we draft if he's still on the board at #58. 6'5" Tony Bland has rounded into a pretty dependable point guard in the D-League over the past two seasons as well.

I still think he's a fringe player:lol Just because a team is desperate and uses him doesn't mean he's good enough to be a regular rotation player in the NBA.

Wow, when that "fringe" player essentially played two seasons as a starting point guard for a playoff team.
