View Full Version : How important is Game 2.........

Considering that there are 4 days in between Game 2 and Game 3. We all know how well the Spurs tend to play with a lot of time off (not well).
Is this break a good one for the Spurs or a recipie for a sluggish Game 3? Is Game 2 as important as Game 1 was?

Win the game and really put the Suns in a hole. This Suns are too good and too explosive. One bad defensive game in this series and it can spin right back into the Suns' favor.

If Suns go down 0-2 in PHX, the series is over.
Game2 is do-or-die for Suns.
The Spurs know it, the Suns know it, Stern knows it (and hates it).
Suns are great, except when they play the SPAM/playoff Spurs.

For us --> not
Ergo, most of the pressure will be on the Suns, no?

Very important because we make this series similar to the 05 series against the Suns, and that, as everybody knows, will assure a Spurs victory.
(whatever the fuck that means. I'm drunk right now, celebrating :drunk )

Suns lose game 2 and they are looking at a possibility of getting Swept....
Spurs lose the game and they are looking at 3 more games to play in our house...
ya, definitely do or die for the Suns.

I agree with all of the other posts.
This is the most important game of the year for both teams.
We have to think just like Doug Collins talked about in 05 when Denver won game 1. He said that you have to expect the opposing team to come in and take 1 game in your building. You must treat this next game as a game you must have when you don't have homecourt advantage (as we didn't when we started this series).

Every game during the playoffs is important.
But not every game is equally important.
This failure to recognize this distinction led to Dallas trying to play every game of the regular season (except the last week) with the intensity of a game 7 playoff series. You can't do that and win the title. Witness Detroit last year and Dallas this year.

It's not a given but if the Spurs go up 2-0 and the Suns have to win twice in SA...it could really shorten this series.

Celebrating what?
Nothing to celebrate. This just means that we are in the series and competitive.
Is it not quite possible that Phoenix could come in here and steal a game?
It seems very possible.
Rule of Product: Multiply the probability of each outcome.
(e.g. if 60 % chance Spurs win game 3 and 60 % chance Spurs win game 4, there exists only a 36 % chance Spurs win both games 3 and 4).

Muy importante! Very Impotant!! Le plus important!! The Suns will go mental if the SPurs pull it off. Pop knows he has to get his players ready for the big joust Tuesday!!

In fact, the tree diagram would show us that it would be a fait accompli (spelling help ).
First team to four victories. It gives us four victories.
Voila.

More important to Phoenix, obviously. They lose and you can start printing WCF playoff tickets in SA.
It was too bad that Nash got hurt and was not able to play the last minute, but whether that made a difference or not, that is unclear. So, Nash will come out with fire on Tuesday and he will probably make sure they win, one way or another.
I really like the guy and if SA loses to them, I will root for him to get the ring.....How sweet would that be to see Mark Cuban have to chew on that for a few years? :lol

If the Suns blow the Spurs out in game 2, expect to see Oberto and Elson on the bench for the remainder of the series.
Right?

The Spurs should play Game 2 like they're down 0-1 instead of up one.
The fact is, the Suns are just as capable of winning in S.A. as we are of winning there. And you'd rather give yourself every margin of error in this series as you can....Get greedy, Spurs!!!

Put it this way - I think the Spurs win in five and I expect that they drop this next game or the one after.
Is it important to win? Yes, of course it is.
You never want to lose any advantage in the playoffs, because it means you have to work that much harder. The sooner we are out, the more time to prepare for the next round and the less your chances of injury or loss are.
On the other hand, if we lose - not a big deal, because the worst that happens is a tied series headed into SA. That's pretty good for playing one of the best teams in the league on their homecourt.

yea but the same rule applies to the suns :
40% to win game 3, and 40% to win game 4 = 16% chance to win both games 3 and 4

Unfortunately the Spurs have always had a bad habit of letting their guard down in game 2 when they went on the road and got a game 1. Hopefully this year is different.

LOL. I calculate the series the very same way. Seriously though if we can take game 2 then there's the very real possibility of a sweep looming. Wouldn't that be something?

Have they? Pop and the core of this team have only had a few series where they didn't have home court.
I actually think they do a pretty solid job of not settling simply for stealing (or taking back) home court, but trying to get a cushion as well.
Obviously we have the Suns series in '05 where they got games 1 & 2. In some series where we had home court and lost it - Spurs took games 3 & 4 this year from denver, games 3 & 4 in '05 from Denver, games 3 & 5 from Jersey in '03 & games 3 & 4 from Dallas in '03.
I actually think the Spurs play better on the road. They're perfect so far in the playoffs.
Bunker mentality baby.

Game 5 is huge for both but it's a must win for PHX. Suns loose, the series is most likley over and The Spurs take a commanding 2-0 lead coming back to SA.

I won't be concerned if SA loses game 2. Kinda pissed, but not concerned.
The Spurs have been a good road team for years. I have every confidence they'll take game 2.

basically the only time home court matters is during a elimination game... the spurs already proved they can win in phx that coupled with the spurs mental toughness will I believe give them the series in 5..

HUGE game for the Suns. They can't afford to drop this, not only because of homecourt, but can they really beat SA 4 out of 5? Not possible.
If the Spurs win this game, our only enemy will be complacency. The Suns' spirit will be shattered. They will know they threw their best punch and we shrugged it off twice.
I have a very good feeling about this series, but I'm not sure if we win Game 2. That will be the Suns BEST effort. If we beat them twice on their home floor, they will be so demoralized that they might not put up much of a fight in San Antonio.
Game 2 will probably be the most difficult of the series for us to win, unless it goes to 7. Phoenix will be doing their best to avoid a 2 game hole going into SA.
Pop, time to make the switch for Bowen back onto Marion. That move, hell, any bold coaching move will stun D'Antoni into inaction and give us an edge.

The Suns are one of the best offensive teams of the last 20 seasons. The Spurs did a pretty damn good job of guarding their pick-and-rolls and the Suns still scored at will. With the Spurs not helping off of three-point shooters, it's literally impossible to stop their pick-and-rolls.
If Suns come and get Game 2, they still have a decent shot at taking the series. However, the Spurs can all but end it if they can get this game.

05-07-2007, 11:45 AM
I had the original post about this being an easier series than Denver. The Suns will come out totally motivated and take a lead, then Spurs will methodically win it again and break their hearts.. Spurs 100, Suns 92 (they are not going over 100 T night!)
Then back to SA to get at least a split, and win this in no more than 5. Lock it up.

Of course every playoff game is a "must-win", but for a home team that has dropped the 1st game, the probability of taking a seven game series after losing the first two on your home floor is rather low. The Spurs could make this a really short series if they take Game 2. I expect an all out effort from the Suns to win Game 2, because defeat would mean "Cancun"...
