View Full Version : Why Doesn't The AT&T Center Give Out Black Towels.....

davi78239

Or Black Shirts for everyone to wear during the game like other teams in the playoffs? We should have a black out or given freakin Black towels to waive in the air as we get loud as hell!!!! Similar to Golden State's atmosphere and what we saw at the Utah game tonight. Man that would be so cool! Are the Spurs too cheap or what?

Like I said, in the past they have given out black towels other occasions they have given out silver towels. Spurs logo on one side sponsor on the other. We don't have to contact anybody on the Spurs. We could just e-mail, or call the local media, whatever and request that they spread the word. But if you want somebody with the team just ask Kori. I believe she's fairly involved with this forum since she runs it.

rayray2k8
05-10-2007, 12:19 AM
We have to ask the fans to participate in this.
Someone e-mail to WOAI or KSAT or whatever and encourge fans to support their
team by sporting all black.
Although the idea sounds cool, it would also look like we're going to a funeral. :lol
But what would we call it??

As Timvp is quick to do his required Peter Holt ripping its a standard practice in sports.

You need a sponsor for it.

UTAH had Zion Bank buy all the shirts.

The Warriors had someone.

The Heat had American Airlines I believe.

Find a sponsor in SA and you could do a blackout.

Then you get into needing a million different sizes each so that they fit.

They should pass around large cardboard squares which are completely black.

The crowd at each end could form a wall of black so that the player shooting a free throw could only see one color. Then, right before he shoots, the crowd throws them down and yells, "BOO!" :lol That would be priceless.

Also, huge beach towels flowing back and forth across the crowd to create a "rippling" effect would be cool to see. And daunting.

And hey, since we're the Spurs, how about free plastic Spurs that make a "clang" sound? That would be a very unique noise to create in an NBA arena, were it allowed.

I dunno what the big deal is. The bottom line is that good Spurs tickets are dirt cheap compared to some other NBA tickets that I've bought. I'll take that over a free towel any day.

And all you need to do is take a walk down Commerce toward the Mercado and there are plenty of stores with "semi-official" Spurs shirts and stuff for less than $10.

GrandeDavid

With all the sponsors the Spurs have, they should be able to find someone willing to do this.

And as for the issue with sizes- just make them all large or extra large- they only have to fit for the game. Smaller people can tie them if need be.

People sell bootleg t-shirts on the street corners all the time, but not right outside the arena. Plus, you'd have to sell over 18,000 to get the effect it sounds like people are asking for.

If so many people that think a blackout would be cool, why do the Spurs have to provide the t-shirts? Just wear black. Sounds like a lot of people just want free stuff.

No- people want to ensure the effect and the way to achieve that is to hand out shirts. If Golden State, Utah, Miami, and Toronto can all do it- surely the Spurs can, if they wanted to. I have even been to arenas where shirts were handed out and it wasn't even the playoffs. Compared to other organizations and arenas, the Spurs giveaways and in arena time out games really suck.

I finally got to see a game in SA in Dec 2005 v. the Heat. It was a great experience. However, I was very surprised at how subdued the crowd was. When I yelled at the ref or at a Heat player, people around me looked at me like I was some kind of weirdo...I didn't sense any real passion for the team. There was applause for the players during introduction and for great plays, but on the whole I was quite disappointed at what I felt was a lack of enthusiasm for a great team. Maybe it was an off night I don't know but it struck me as odd. It was definitely not what I expected.

Just telling it like it is. Many people in San Antonio have no clue about the things that NBA teams do in other cities and in other arenas. It is the benefit of being a one-horse town. Compared to other NBA franchises, the Spurs marketing sucks. The Spurs have gotten cheaper and cheaper when it comes to giveaways because they keep losing long-time corporate sponsors. Wonder why? People are not asking for something out of the ordinary standard of other NBA teams- or even something expensive. But the Spurs are still extremely small time when it comes to professional sports marketing. But the local fans "buy it" so it works because most don't know any better.

FWD I am CC '91. How bout you.

I was in CC '94, but I transferred out after my sophomore year. We were there at the same time in Fall 90/Spring 91. Though I transferred (for reasons that had nothing to do with the institution) I still consider Morningside Heights to be my Alma Mater. Had way too many good times there.

It looks like they're giving silver Spurs flags to everyone at game three. Not quite a shirt but at least they're trying huh?

Silver flags is lame. Either do it right or don't bother.

I wish I was on the marketing team for the Spurs. I have some fun ideas and would love some funding and equally creative, fan oriented people to brain storm with.
Would be fun!

The Slovenian flag comment is not too far off. I think it would be neat to have international theme nights, say once a month, that highlight the home country of each of our international guys.

They could maybe have someone sing their national anthemn in addition to ours, like they do in Canada and have time out entertainment/ games and or give away related to that country.
I haven't worked out all the details yet- just some preliminary thoughts.

I would definitely want to institute the t-shirt idea for play offs.

That is all I can tell you off the top of my head. I am at my other job and tired.
But I am certain I could come up with some neat events, especially with a team to help. :)

Sorry you had to leave. And yes, New York is the place. Do you go to the games? Maybe we can discuss the Marlin or West End some day.

Marlin -- my, oh my. Now that brings back some fuzzy memories. I was more of a regular at Cannon's, but I spent a few delightful evenings crammed into Marlin. Hot Bagels or slabs of pizza on the way home!!

I do go to the games. We'll have to find an opportunity to catch up.

I remember Cannon's. Remember getting a slice at Koronets. Can you believe Columbia bagels no longer exists. Did you ever partake of the free unlimited wine( should I say libation?) with your meal at either of the cottages?

What the At&T needs to do is cut out the canned music, sound effects, and PA cheerleading during the game.

Look at how loud the GS crowd is and how they do it on their own.

Spur fans have gotten lazy.

SO much to respond to.
1. You do marketing to bring in more money. do you think the Spurs need to market right now to sell out a playoff game?? NO! They would only do it for the fans. what we do need is a motto to back out team... Ive seen you guys mention the "mud pit" "blackout" and "Dirty". I Think we need more then this to bring the team and the fans together. A motto for the entire playoffs! I dont have a suggestion, but im sure you guys can do way better them me.

2. Stan Kelly...I just CANT STAND when the spurs are doing poorly and he tells the fans, "a little help" That makes me steam...why let your own team know they need help. how about," How about that 6th man!!!" something we can cheer for.

3. Last year playoofs has some DJ from some local radio station who worked the crowd into a frenzy. does anyone know who this was?? of if he is being used in this years playoffs????

4. Music....how about the song from eminem about having one shot you better not miss your oppertinity. I dont know all the words..but the song sure works you up.

5. Black shirts....its already been said,,,SPONSORS, but I doubt they have the time to get it done by tomorrow...

Spur fans have gotten lazy.

Most of these same fans were at game 7 of the 05 finals. Of course they're lazy. Once you've been to the mountain top, the climb can sometimes seem like a formality.

All I can tell you is... have faith in your Spurs marketing team.

Sorry, but I can't have faith in complacency or mediocrity.
