Amaré Stoudemire called the San Antonio Spurs a dirty team Thursday and directed most of his words toward defensive specialist Bruce Bowen and sixth man Manu Ginobili.
Hours after the Suns center learned he had made First Team All-NBA, Stoudemire unleashed frustration at what he said were attempts by Bowen and Ginobili to hurt him during the Suns' Game 2 win in the Western Conference semifinals.

Bowen's play irritated him most. In the third quarter, Stoudemire felt a kick to his left Achilles tendon as he leaped inside. He came down awkwardly and said his foot was sore the rest of the night. He got medical treatment before practice.

Stoudemire said he wasn't sure Bowen had kicked him on purpose until he saw the replay.

"It was a wide-open play," he said. "I saw the replay and Bruce Bowen came up behind me, measured his feet and kicked me purposely in the back of my Achilles. That was a dirty play.

"I hope the NBA looks into in and takes a look at Bruce Bowen. In Game 1, I told Bruce to calm down because he might get somebody hurt out there. He had a 'don't care' type of attitude. And it showed in Game 2, when he kicked me purposely in my Achilles. I almost came down wrong and he almost caused an injury. He's known for doing that. I just hope the NBA and the commissioner takes a look because it's definitely a dirty play and that's not something we need."

Stoudemire said the Suns are sending game film into the league office for review. Game 3 of the best-of-seven series is Saturday in San Antonio.

"I'm not worried about it," Suns coach Mike D'Antoni said. "I don't think it's a big deal. . . . The league will look at it. Whatever they decide, fine."

Stoudemire has no doubt Bowen meant to kick him.

"For a player to be behind me, there's no way you can try and go for a block and kick me directly in the Achilles," he said. "There's no way. I've dunked on guys. I've been dunked on, so I know how it is to play hard out there. That wasn't a case of someone playing hard, it was just a case of trying to injure someone, plain and simple."

Stoudemire said he didn't react immediately because he didn't want to hurt his team with a technical foul or suspension.

"We're trying to win a ball game," he said. The series is tied 1-1.

Stoudemire said he had told Bowen to "Calm down" in Game 1, because he felt Bowen was playing recklessly.

"He was just kind of out of control," Stoudemire said. "I mean, Bruce Bowen's normally under control, but he ran directly into me. I said, 'Man, you're going to get somebody hurt out here. He was like, 'Shut up." I was like, 'Man, I'm just giving you some cautions. You're going to get somebody hurt.' But he wasn't hearing it. . . . Bruce Bowen, who's a two-time champion, should have more class than that."

Stoudemire was upset with Ginobili for grabbing his knee while falling. He said Ginobili had kneed him in the crotch earlier this season.

"The Spurs are a dirty team," Stoudemire said.

The Suns need something to feed off of coming to San Antonio. They know playing the REF card usually has it's rewards the next game, and they'll need all the help they can get in the AT&T Center for the next two games.

how can amare have the nerve to call out bruce bowen and say the whole team is dirty...maybe he does not recall what reputation raja bell has earned with the kobe bryant rock bottom last year...and not to mention the karate chop to manu in game 1...if he really wants to call out a leg trip compared to a blow to the head.. automatic one game suspension..this could actually be in the suns favor..bringing attention of dirty play to the series which puts the magnifine glass on bell and bowen...ill take my chances bowen does the best staying out of trouble

To really put this shit to bed, watch the video again. Bruce does appear to kick Amare, but, if you look closely, Bruce NEVER LOOKS DOWN. I guess he has incredible aim.

The real reason Bruces right leg moves toward Amare is because Bruce is trying to stop his forward momentum. He doesn't want to foul Amare on an obvious dunk. Have you ever run sprints from baseline to baseline? How do you stop yourself and get ready to run the other direction? You do what Bruce did in this video.

Good Job STAT. You're just doing what you're supposed to do and telling it like it is. The Spurs are old, dirty and boring. The Suns are young, clean and exciting. Not as good as the Mavs, nobody can touch Dallas, except for the Warriors + 3 blind, bribed mice, but good job Amare. Tim Duncan is an overrated fluke and his nickname should be STAB -- Standing Tall and Boring.

I wish the Spurs were serious about filling that hole at the 2-guard spot. You could really use a good one against Phoenix. I have to say, in all fairness, I give a slight edge to Manu over Rolando Blackman, former Mavs great, but then again, Rolando is 47 years old. It's a tossup for sure, but if you put me on the spot, I would grudgingly take Manu over Blackman for tonight's game. Or I might not, again, between the two, it's a close call. Of course, in his prime, Blackman would've destroyed Manu.

Mavs > Spurs.I wish the Mavs were serious about not tying the noose so tightly. They could really have waken up and slipped their heads out before they jumped and choked against Golden State. I have to say, the Mavs are no strangers to choking, they really did last year as well, and to this day have zero championships. I give a slight edge to the Mavericks because they are extremely dominant in the regular season when it matters the most, but when it comes to the playoffs they don't know what to do. Spurs > Mavs.

The Warriors and the referees did what the Spurs could not. Dampier and Diop own Duncan, who is an overrated fluke. The Spurs three titles were flukes because the first time it was half a season and the Spurs got all the calls against the Knicks, and then the second time the League was tired of the Lakers dominating so the refs screwed them against the Spurs. Same thing when you guys "beat" the Pistons. The Mavericks own you since we sent you fishing last year and we took the season series 3-1.

But for the record, Manu holding his legs wasn't a dirty move it was a smart move, whenever a player fouls someone who has a dunk opportunity it's always a smart move, this was much the same because Manu had no other way of stopping Amare because he was on the floor, it's not his fault the ref didn't see it...

Yes, and he was suspended for his actions, which was the correct thing to do.

And for all of the yapping about Bowen, that's one thing that he and Raja don't have in common. Of the two, only Raja has ever been suspended for something done to another player. Like I said elsewhere today, compare the league's disciplinary history with Bowen and the same history with Bell, and then tell me who the dirty player is. It's not like the league is going to go out of its way to protect Bowen -- a guy who defends the marquee players in the league night-after-night.

And, again, I still wonder why the Spurs are being called the crybabies in this series.

Nashfan
05-10-2007, 05:23 PM
Makes him sound like a little girl. However, I think if it were the other way around, we'd be complaining as well and wanting someone like Raja Bell to get suspended.

The Spurs didn't work the officials on the Terry suspension. They submitted tape to the league, but Spurs players and coaches weren't screaming out in the media that Terry was a thug or anything like that.

The most ridiculous part of this entire thing is the notion that NBA officials can somehow be influenced by things that are said in the media. I know it happens, but there's no way that it should.

I am not gonna get into whether it was intentional, Bowen is dirty, or whatever. Lord there is already about 5,345 threads on that already.

What I will comment on is the Suns fans "crying" about the play in question. My thoughts are we now have our superstar back and healthy after a loooong time of wondering if Amare would even be close to the same after the microfracture suregy. I think the fans are still in this "coddle Amare mode" hence the uproar.

If Bowen did this to say James Jones or someone I don't think it is an issue.

It's one thing to elbow a man to his face like Karl Malone used to (still dirty) but the dirty undercutting that Bowen does just shows what a complete coward he is.

If anyone thinks this isn't a clearly intentional kick, it's just denial.

Bowen is a disgrace to the NBA. Why the need to resort to stepping underneath players and blatantly try to injure their ankles, knees, and feet?

We've seen this with Jamal Crawford.

Dumbass that series went to 7 games! Tim Duncan has 40+ points and it went down to the wire! You didn't win easy and with a few calls that went Dallas' way is why they went to the Finals! You have nothing to be proud of as your team choked to an old-ass Miami Heat! However, since your team choked twice, you can have your Conference Championship banners as we will enjoy another Championship while your team went fishing by a number 8 seed Golden State and can only watch us win yet again! :clap

If Bruce was a man, he wouldnt kick a Ray Allen on the ground with his back to him or kick Amare in the back of his achillles with his back turned to him. He'd pop them in the mouth.

Some fans on here would think it was unintentional even if Bowen came out and admitted it was on purpose.

How can anyone look at that video and see it as anything but an intentional kick? You gotta be kidding.

How about Leandrinho undercutting Tony. I know Leandrinho is going to Tony's wedding this summer, so for the life of me I will assume he did not purposefully try to harm him. But it was a dumb move that could have hurt Tony badly.

But staying on topic, I'm thinking Bruce was just trying to tap Amare's achilles to make sure it was nice and firm and not in need of surgical repair. Just a friendly little tap. :P

It's one thing to accidently do something, but to intentionally do what Bowen does is another.

He shouldnt have called the entire team dirty, but in no way does he deserve to be criticized for complaining about Bowen's bushleague kick.

What Ginobili did was illegal and a clear foul, but not a dirty play. Ginobili's rep is flopping, not really dirty play.

When you become the 100th player to complain about Bruce Bowen's dirtiness, it's not just whining as much as noting the obvious however. I'm sure Jazz fans thought Malone wasnt dirty in the late 90's but 99% of neutral NBA fans did.

I disagree about Ginobli. His insane flopping puts other players at risk of injury as well. Plus both Duncan AND Ginobli grabbed STAT's leg in that game. The dude is trying to come back from an injury and THREE Spurs players make a point of either grabbing or kicking his leg? Was it part of Pop's game plan to try and take STAT out? It's a good thing Amare remained stationary during those plays or his season could have been over.

But Bowen is really in a league all his own. Dirtiest player in the NBA and it's obviously rubbing off on his teammates.

Kudos to the classy Spurs fans who are acknowledging this skullduggery and demanding it stop. If I were from San Antonio I'd rather my team be remembered as a champion rather than a pack of sneaks and reprobates. Better to lose with honor than win with dirty tricks that put other players at risk.

Amare didn't get a call on that play because he didn't bother to try to go get the ball. It's not a foul if it doesn't impede the play; when Amare chose not to move, Crawford did the right thing in making no call.

One irony, of course, about that play in the context of this discussion, was watching Amare complain to the official all the way back up the court, including pointing two fingers at his eyes and then to the official.

But it's really only the Spurs who whine.

And if that happened, Manu is ripe for a very long suspension. The point, though, is that you don't get a foul called for standing still while someone else is holding onto you. That happens all the time in the NBA, and it's never called. I realize that the play has somehow become some sort of mantra for many Suns fans to rely upon as proof that the NBA officials favor the Spurs and are out to get the telegenic Suns, but it was a correct call -- one that's made every night in every game in some form or another.

I seem to recall Barbosa getting injured by a totally unecessary (and ridiculously exaggerated) flop by Manu. I'm sure there are other examples.

Raja's a tough guy who uses unecessary roughness; that's not the same thing as being dirty. Dirty is what wimps do who can't handle things straight up, ie the Spurs.

What difference does any of that make? Are you suggesting that the correctness of Amare's statement -- or of Crawford's no call in Game 2 -- should somehow be judged by who these teams are and what they bring to the table for the lowest common denominator?

Again, if it's about excitement and ratings, let's just make this like the WWE or American Idol. Why not just make the competitive element of the game an illusion and leave it up to the league to decide or for fans to vote to ensure that two telegenic teams are in the Finals and nobody ever has to worry about small market, boring teams like the Spurs.

What FLop by Manu? please elborate instead of another retarded assumption.

Of course I hope the refs get their head's out of their asses because they are definitely giving all the calls to the Spurs it's so obvious.

Maybe if your team wasn't so pathetic you would be up 2-0 instead of down 0-2!

Here ya go:

Barbosa out 2-3 weeks after Ginobili fell into his knee
ESPN.com news services

Phoenix Suns guard Leandro Barbosa could miss up to three weeks with an injury to his left knee.

Barbosa has Grade 2 sprain of the medial collateral ligament in his left knee and is out two to three weeks, the team said Monday.

But while the diagnosis received a sigh of relief from the team, it offered little solace for Barbosa who believes the injury could have been avoided.

He was injured Saturday when Spurs guard Manu Ginobili fell into him. He did return to play in the second half of that game.

"Ginobili always likes to flop," Barbosa told The Arizona Republic. "Nobody even touched him.

"He jost flopped. That's why I feel sad to hurt myself like that," he added. "I wish I could have hurt myself in another way."

Suns coach Mike D'Antoni told the paper Ginobili "got tangled up a little bit" with Raja Bell when he stumbled backward, and "just to make his point, he was falling down."

"It was an accident," D'Antoni told the Republic.

Ginobili has been accused in the past of overacting to draw fouls; Suns forward Shawn Marion even joked about practicing his own acting skills during last season's Western Conference finals, the paper reported.

Barbosa was averaging 15.7 points in 25.8 minutes this season.

--

Ginobli thus puts other players at risk with his absurd offensive flopping. He does not try to hurt players intentionally like Bowen does, but he's still a dirty player.

the league would do cartwheels if the Lakers and Heat were in the finals and that's about the only two teams they'd love to see. You could probably add the cavs to that list as well but the suns? They're a small market like the spurs, just because there is more scoring doesn't mean lots of people will tune in. Superstars bring in viewers and Nash isn't a superstar, the average joe doesn't realize how good he is and probably thinks Wade or LBJ is way better. No team drew a bigger audience then Jordan's Bulls and they were great defensive team that kept the game in the 80s to 90s.

Ginobli thus puts other players at risk with his absurd offensive flopping. He does not try to hurt players intentionally like Bowen does, but he's still a dirty player.

Alonzo also wouldn't call Carlos Boozer a welsher, because Alonzo himself has been called a welsher, back when he welshed his way out of the contract he signed with New Jersey.

Also, Alonzo doesn't like it when people refer to Shawn Bradley as "poster bait".

Alonzo Mourning knows how much the truth hurts, you see.

So because Barbosa was bitching SPur fans should take his side? We should think that Manu and Bruce are dirty because of some shitty article you found? Or maybe just because you say it makes it so. Get over yourself

You guys don't get it. It all started with Mike D'Antoni... He is the one who has instructed his players to come out in the open to say something like that because he is one mother fukking whiny little bitch.. You don't see Spurs players do that because Pop wouldn't have allowed it.

When I see Nash, I am just wondering why this classy guy is doing with a stupid coach like Mike D'Antoni

the league would do cartwheels if the Lakers and Heat were in the finals and that's about the only two teams they'd love to see.

That may be true but I find it sad that people rather watch the Heat and Lakers 2 mediocore teams then the 2 best teams in the West.

Where's your teams rings?

Spurs fans need to stop living in the past. Lakers fans use the same argument. Weak.

Its like me saying how are you guys enjoying the MLB season? oh wait you don't have a team. how bout the upcoming NFL season? oh wait you don't even have a team. NHL playoffs are in high gear, oh wait you don't even have a team. Stupid and pointless.

We OBVIOUSLY have NO RINGS and are trying to change that. Will we? I don't know but I hope so, so it shuts up people like you. All I know is you asked what our excuses were in 2005 and 2006 and I pointed out that you guys took us out in 2005 in the WCF and you guys didn't even make it there in 2006 and you come back with the "how many rings" thing again. WEAK.

You forget that was by design. The Spurs game plan was to let Amare get his points but stay home on the shooters. Remember that Marion and Richardson were M.I.A. in that series.

I don't know how (some) spurs fans (and bruce bowen fans) can even put up with this stupidity. I for one have said my two cents, and it has proved to be a bad investment...over and over again over the years...

I suggest we just don't even talk about it anymore. It's really pointless.

You think Bowen sliding under people to try to hurt their ankles and knees is "hard"?

LOL.

There arent many more cowardly, soft acts on a bball court than undercutting a player or kicking them when their back is turned to you.

If Bruce was a man, he wouldnt kick a Ray Allen on the ground with his back to him or kick Amare in the back of his achillles with his back turned to him. He'd pop them in the mouth.

These acts just show what a lame pussy Bowen is.

I guess I should have found an emoticon to express my sarcasm better....
