C-David Robinson (retired division) or, actually Shaquille O'Neal. O'Neal's SATs were a lot higher than you might think.

About Shane Battier? I don't think so.

Adonal Foyle is a legitimately bright guy.

I'm surprised that BUMP would exclude a guy like Etan Thomas.

Seriously?

for the NBA, yeah...how many NBA guys speak more than one language and got over 1200 on their SATs?

oh, and for retired NBA guys, i'd have to go with Kareem

oh, mutombo took the SATs? interesting. anyway, not sure if the SAT was such a big deal back in the day, seems like Kareem with his 131 IQ would've done well.

I'll take Kareem. He's wrote numerous books and is a big time scholar. Bill Russell is also a very intelligent person.

kareem 131 IQ? so kareem is nine points away from being a genius but he decided to pursue basketball? You can never trust anyone when they tell you their IQ. it's pretty much a lie born with a protective shield, in that like a penis it's something everybody wants to lie about but not everyone will get to see.

vaughn had a 4.0 in college

I agree about Kobe.

I am surprised about Shaq. He has a high basketball iq, but I didn't know if that would translate into school.

Tim and Shane Battier are obvious picks as is David Robinson. As a math person, I have to favor him. But I understand that he is quite a musician, correct? I wish I had any musical ability, but trust me on this one, I don't. So, I admire that he has both math and music (and imo, both are equally important and I say that as a math teacher).

I actually believe that most of the mvp winners are pretty smart, at least in basketball iq, because pure, natural talent and even work ethic won't be enough.

Didn't know about Kareen.

Bill Russell is someone I have always admired. He played long before I was born, but when I see him talking on tv, I have a lot of respect for him.

No mentions of Dwight Howard? This guy is legitimately smart and drew DRob comparisons on that basis.

I guess that's what you get for being in Orlando -- no one notices you, and if they do, they don't care.

On a more relevant note: Malik Rose

Actually, there was a trivia question in the early 90s: Name the three NBA All-Star centers who scored over 1200 on their SATs.

The answers were Kareem, DRob, and Shaq.

CubanMustGo
05-19-2007, 03:37 PM
DRob scored over 1300 (1320, to be exact).

it was BIGGER. before the watered down scores in more recent years.

TD and DRob. Pretty much any player who was in college for the full 4 years like Ryan Gomes...

And I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that Shaq got a 700 on his SATs and Kobe a 900. (old scale to be fair..)

Kobe: 1080 (Wikipedia)

Among active players I would add Emeka Okafor, who was a pretty strong student while at UConn (graduated with a degree in finance and a 3.8 GPA).

Out of the retired players I would add Kevin Johnson, if only for the fact that I remember an NBA announcer commenting how KJ likes to read the novels of Thomas Hardy when he wants to relax.
