View Full Version : Spurs License Plates Not An Option

SAN ANTONIO -- Like a lot of San Antonians these days, Craig Kindle is trying to find creative ways to show his support for the San Antonio Spurs.

Recently when Kindle got a notice in the mail to renew his license plates, he thought about getting some specialty plates of his favorite NBA team.

But to his disappointment, Kindle found out his only option for specialty plates of a Texas NBA team was of the Dallas Mavericks.

"I was pretty much shocked that we were left off the list," Kindle said in an interview with KSAT 12 News.

So why aren't Spurs specialty license plates available?

The Texas Department of Transportation requires professional sports teams to pay a $15,000 deposit to have specialty plates printed. The team can recover their deposit once 3,500 plates are sold.

But after checking with other professional sports teams around Texas, Spurs officials found out that most teams never reach the quota and decided to pass on the specialty plates.

Man the Spurs are about the stupidest team in pro-sports when it comes to marketing, and have been since day 1.

Did they ask those other teams how many championships they have won recently? Did they ask them if there are any other pro teams in their towns?

IF the other teams go and jump off a bridge are the Spurs going too as well, or some shit like that?

Bash Cuban all you want, but at least he knows how to sell his team to his public.

Yeah, no kidding. Make it an option and everyone in this damn town would have a Spurs license plate. I'd take the over on 3,500 plates in the first month.

It's just a dummy safeguard to avoid having to make a mold for every organization in Texas. However, I doubt they added Holt's cheapness to their equation.

I can see it now, a petition getting about a 100,000 signatures, then after the mold is made, they sell 500.

I'm also pretty sure that it is 15k per year, otherwise they wouldn't worry about selling 3,500 to get the deposit back.

If someone was passionate enough about it, they could probably go to a bank and get the bank to accept deposits for the plates. Of course one or more of the news stations would have to endorse it to raise public interest. Kind of unorthodox, but it has been done to raise money, albeit for more worthwile cases. It would be sad if SA could not get 3,500 plates, much less the surrounding area.

$15k isn't that much really if it's a one-time fee. Plus they get to recoup some of it.
