LAKE FOREST, Ill. (AP) -- Disgruntled Pro Bowl linebacker Lance Briggs was a no-show as expected Friday when the Chicago Bears opened a three-day minicamp.

In March, the Bears tagged Briggs as their franchise player, prompting him to threaten a holdout, at first for the entire season and then for 10 games so he could report for the final six to qualify as serving one year as a franchise player.

"History tells me that guys will occasionally miss minicamp," coach Lovie Smith said. "History will tell you that they're sometimes late for training camp, some maybe miss training camp.

"History tells me that players don't miss an entire football season. Lance is a part of us. We would like to have him here. Hopefully in time we'll get him back."

The Bears also took the opportunity Friday to work return man Devin Hester in with the offense at wide receiver and running back. He caught a touchdown pass during one seven-on-seven drill.

As a rookie last season when the Bears reached the Super Bowl, Hester returned an NFL-record six kicks for touchdowns and then added another in the loss to the Indianapolis Colts in the championship game.

Before agreeing to the change from cornerback, Hester said he consulted with his mentor, Deion Sanders.

"I'm a backyard football player and what I mean by that is I grew up playing everything: street football where you had to play quarterback, receiver," Hester said.

"I'm a Florida-type football player. We go out and just play everything."
