Van Gundy to Pacers?

Stan Van Gundy has emerged as the leading candidate to become the next coach of the Pacers and could wind up filling that position by midweek.

The former Heat coach spent part of the weekend in Indianapolis with his wife, Kim.

The Pacers have taken a break from their interview process, a process that has included interviews with assistant coaches Chuck Person and Johnny Davis, as well as Lakers assistant and former Heat guard Brian Shaw.

Having committed to an interview with the Kings before his Friday interview in Indiana, Van Gundy will honor that commitment today in Sacramento. Last Friday's interview in Indianapolis was his second with Pacers President Larry Bird, with the two previously meeting in South Florida.

The Pacers are looking for a replacement for Rick Carlisle, while the Kings have a vacancy after Eric Musselman was dismissed after one season.

Van Gundy is under contract as a Heat consultant through June 2008, but Pat Riley said last month that Van Gundy is free to leave for another coaching position.

Van Gundy joined the Heat as an assistant coach Sept. 20, 2005 and took over from Riley as coach Oct. 24, 2003.

He left as Heat coach Dec. 12, 2005, citing family reasons, after recording a 112-73 record in his two-plus seasons as coach.

In addition to his interviews with the Kings and Pacers, Van Gundy also interviewed with the Bobcats, but Charlotte appears to be moving in a different direction.
