You mean they passed up an opportunity to shame poor San Antonians into forgoing next month's rent?

SAN ANTONIO -- The San Antonio Spurs decided to take Monday off and made only three players available to the media.

The NBA responded on Tuesday with a $50,000 fine for failing to provide enough players for a required media session.

The fine, issued by NBA executive vice president Stu Jackson, came after Spurs coach Gregg Popovich decided to let his team rest after Game 1 of the Western Conference finals against Utah. San Antonio won Game 1, 108-100.

A year ago, in a similar scenario, the Spurs won Game 1 of the Western Conference finals, but were routed in Game 2.

"We had no energy," guard Tony Parker said in the San Antonio News-Express. "We basically just gave them the game. We lost by (22) and that's not good because you give them confidence and then they go back home."

So Popovich, looking back at history, called for a rest day. Robert Horry, Jacque Vaughn and Parker were at the team's practice facility.

Parker was there to get treatment on his sore right shoulder and knees.

Props to Pop for giving them a rest and not worrying about the fine. Health and winning > Media Sessions.

Out of curiousity, How many players were they supposed to give?

And I agree- pops to prop. :) ( Look I can speak Ducks :) )

Not a bad way to spend 50 g's. The cost of rest seems a little excessive.

Think about it this way,

$50,000 is about what Cuban plays Finley for each quarter of a game.

Can they just pre record their interviews, and send it out for the year,

1) Defense wins games
2) It was a good team effort
3) We came out good in the first half
4) T.D is the man

5) We did a good job closing out the game.
6) We made our shoots from the line.

I'm thrilled. Pop (and the Spurs organization) has never given in to the media pressure.
Fuck 'em. I'm glad they got to rest. Priorities are straight in the Spurs camp.

8) Both teams played hard!

These assholes were calling them dirty all week and treating our team horribly and we are expected to meet with them? Give me a break! Fuck the media!

9) Pop would say something like this,
Reporter to Pop, “coach there are teams around the league calling the spurs dirty”, Pop answer would be, “next question please”.

You break a rule, you pay the price. That 50K is probably less than what it cost Stoudamire for ignoring a rule. (I could do the math on the cost of 1 game without pay...but I'm too damned lazy.) I don't want to hear the Spurs players answering the same old bullshit questions. I want to watch them win another playoff game. Hats off to the organization for focusing on the game, and being willing to pay the price.

Fucking cheap Holt. The Spurs could have provided 0 players instead of 3 but he was too cheap to pay the resulting $200K fine. :madrun

We laughed about this at work, and decided that next time, Pop should just call an optional practice, and have no one show up. :rollin

Fuck that shit. This is their 3rd playoff game tip in 96 hours. Glad Pop and the Spurs manned up.
