Does anyone here go to farmers markets around SA? I want to start going to them but would like a better idea of the best ones to go to, along with when and where they are.

Weird! I just got back from the farmers' market. But I live in San Marcos, so I can't answer your question. I just bought a pint of amazing blackberries, and I have no clue what to do with them. :lol I also bought a basil plant and an oregano plant. Here's hoping I don't kill them!

There is one off of Bitters, but I can't remember the name of the little shopping complex they have it at. It's between Blanco and West... there's a little complex of artsy shops and I think there's a tea room as well. I've seen signs for a farmers market on the weekends.

The stuff is usually very fresh, and sometimes cheaper than the grocery store. The prices vary, but the freshness is what sells it, IMO. Plus a lot of them will let you sample before you buy. It's fun to go, even if you don't buy.

Thanks Sapphire - I had found that list earlier and was hoping that some people had been to some of those markets so I wouldn't get there and find out it didn't exist anymore :lol That would be my luck.
I'm so sick of the nasty ass HEB produce by me - I'm tired of paying Central Market prices for stuff that's pretty average, and both of the HEB locations by me have recently had such lovely stock that included rot and flies. I don't understand why the farther south you get in this city the shittier the produce gets (well, I do understand, but I don't approve).
Spurfect - Central Market is at Broadway and Patterson, a couple blocks north of Hildebrand.

what exactly is farmer's market.. do they just sell fruits and veggies? and is this at good prices? they basically have fresh produce. i don't know how they're labeled in SA or wherever, but here in _allas they're called "farm merchants". these guys are the very same farmer that you buy from. if you buy from a "produce dealer" you're basically buying where HEB or your normal supermarket buys from. all that stuff is irradiated and soaked in pesticides and is obviously bad for you. hopefully i won't set off a heated debate with that sentence. "farm merchants" pick all their stuff the day or night before and is very fresh and free of all that bad stuff. there's no need to preserve it when its moving no more than 100 miles. you just need to ask who you buy from and pay attention to the boxes they have their veggies/fruits in. if the tomatoes look immaculate and shine so bright you have to wear shades, it's probably not picked the day before. prices are about the same, but it's worth it.

You can also buy your lunch there. I love central market but don't make it a habit of shopping there. They are turning the HEB on Blanco into an HEB Plus which is supposed to carry more central market type stuff.

a main part of the organic food movement has been "buy local", but agribusiness/Wal-mart is, with US govt complicity, diluting the organic label to fit better with the agribusiness industrial food model where food is grown to be shipped 100s or 1000s of miles.
Here's Dr Mercola on Wal-mart buying from China:
Another Reason Not to Buy Food From Wal-Mart
POSTED BY
Dr. Mercola
China has morphed—seemingly overnight—into a dangerous juggernaut run amok into kitchens across America. They’ve jumped onboard the organic food train, and are seizing the opportunity to expand their already massive exports market by adding fresh produce. The real price for cheap strawberries year-round, however, may end up being your health.
Just consider this: in the first three months of this year, imports of fresh fruit from China grew by 279 percent and fresh vegetables by 66 percent. This kind of explosive growth of imported fresh produce from, literally, the other end of the earth, has the potential for some pretty dire health ramifications.
Wal-Mart is the nation’s largest food retailer. They are also China’s eighth-largest trading partner. Unfortunately, Wal-Mart does not appear to have your best interest at heart, as they spearhead the campaign against stricter food regulations, port inspections and country of origin labeling.
China is now almost as known for its toxic food ingredients as they are for cheap electronics. Especially in the light of the last few months’ string of disasters, like:
Ø Pet food ingredients laced with toxic melamine
Ø Imported livestock quarantined for disease and banned chemical contaminants
Ø Catfish fillets from Chinese aquatic farms tainted with bacteria and heavy metals
Ø Dried apples preserved with a cancer-causing chemical
Ø Mushrooms laced with illegal pesticides
Don’t fall for Wal-Mart’s cheap promises of healthy fresh foods, available regardless of the season. Instead, support your local farmers—and protect your own health—by buying fresh, organic produce that hasn’t seen more of the world than you have. Also, stick with fruits and vegetables that are in season, according to your nutritional type.

Yeah, the next one doesn't happen until June 15th (3-7pm), but the article I read said it was a pretty good one, so I'm planning on making the trek out there then :) Link (http://www.mysanantonio.com/news/neighbors/northcentral/stories/MYSA053007.1H.NC.farmersmarket.2081d39.html)
And boutons, organic from China? That is pretty damn scary, I really don't trust the stuff coming from China enough to want to even buy their version of organic. It's important to remember, too, that when drinking lots of green tea you need to buy organic since most of that tea comes from China and it's got all kinds of crazy pesticides on it.

Back from three markets (1918 Palo Alto, Houston St @ 281 in Pleasanton, and 800 Buena Vista) and a produce stand on 281S - we're guessing it was pretty inactive because it's not a weekend, but still came back with lots of really nice stuff. We got a big ass seedless watermelon (bigger than any I've ever seen at the store) for all of $2, fresh squash, loads of blackberries, peaches, and tomatoes. One of the vendors at Palo Alto had a carton of serrano chilis for $1, so I have a whole lot to play with :)
