So I'm at safeway... checking out. There's the dude at the register and theres a bunch of groceries to be bagged while he keeps ringing up my items. The bag boy(s) are at the other counters helping out others. Would you bag yourself or is that kinda making the bag boys look bad? I know if you shop at like a shitty place like food maxx you bag yourself, but safeway?

nope.
At target they are kind trying to get you to bag your own stuff... but I'm already paying more for shopping there instead of wal-mart, so I make it obvious I am busy with my kids and they usually do it 90% of the time.
Heb bags my stuff all the time. So does Sun-Harvest :)

I always bag my groceries.... I can't stand it when some idiot sacker puts heavy stuff in the same bag as my bread... or throws the apples into a bag instead of carefully placing to avoid bruising... or puts the dishwasher detergent in the same bag as my bananas.
I realize they don't get paid much so they don't care. All the more reason to do it myself.
The only place I buy enough to worry about someone bagging is HEB, and their baggers typically go a good job, they get trained on what goes with what and where in bags...
And no I don't bag my own groceries, I buy too many to do that shit myself...

In light of recent developments (....finding out that GiG does the same thing I do in regards to groceries and for pretty much the same reason) I have decided to do a 180 and begin allowing the sacker to do his/her job to avoid any identical traits to said individual.

If there is a lot of groceries to be bagged and the baggers are helping other then I start bagging groceries and the cashiers always help. In regards to being helped with the groceries to my vehicle....I except their help when I am having moderate/severe pain to my back or my arm, the rest of the time I'll do it myself and let the baggers help out others who need the assistance.

At the two stores I frequent, I usually have an army of baggers waiting to assist and even get several offers for help out to my car when I'm just buying a gallon of milk and a loaf of bread. They're a bit overly helpful there. But if I hit the store when it's especially busy, I'll definitely start bagging to keep the people behind me from having to wait for so long. I can't stand when someone's at the head of a long line and they won't lift a finger to help speed the process for everyone else.

HEB baggers go through an intense bagging program. Academics and physical training are part of the program they go through.
They don't all make it. So next time- leave a tip. Or bag it yourself..what's the big deal. If they got rid of baggers tomorrow...it wouldn't bother me.

Checkers check groceries. Shoppers buy groceries. Baggers bag groceries. I would never interrupt the flow of a grocery store universe. :lol If I go to Winco (grocery warehouse), I like to take an able-bodied child. If said child is not available, I'll pay more at the store with bagging service and delivery to my trunk.

I try not to make a grocery run without at least one of my personal slaves--er, I mean children. They do an excellent job of unloading the grocery cart and if need be get bagging. They have been taught well by me---no bags with just one item in it!

I think the baggers at my HEB (281 & Evans) must bethe slow-learners of the program. :dizzy No rhyme or reason to how they bag. I won't do it myself, but I will direct the entire process. Once again--no bags with just one item in them! :nope

Who the hell wastes their time with a cashier and a bagger? Self-checkout is the greatest thing ever. The day I saw a self checkout station my life changed forever. No dealing with slow ass teenagers who can't figure shit out. Nowadays I won't even shop at a grocery store that doesn't have self-checkout.

Heavy shit on top of my produce pisses me off, and I don't care if the esteemed NorCal thinks I'm picky. I definitely bag my own groceries if there's not a bagger there, because I think I'd look pretty stupid just standing there staring at my groceries like I'm not sure what happens next. (I also buy a whole cartload full of crap at a time, so maybe there's a difference between that and having, like, 6 things that the checker can throw in a bag for you when he's done ringing).

Oh there's definitely some drawbacks to the self-checkout lane....like when you get the "unexpected item, please remove" message, so you remove it and then immediately get a "item removed, please put back into bagging area" and u go around in that circle for eternity....but I think self-checkout technology has gotten alot better and most of the time there's no problems at all with it.

my rant wasn't even about the machine itself.. it was about the people that use it! :lolThat ain't no lie..... Want to watch your temper flare up? Get behind a technology challenged customer in a self-checkout lane and watch them as they scan... all though it didn't beep but they don't know it's supposed to so they place it in the bag... then the scanner tells them that an "unidentified item was placed in the bagging area, please scan again"... so they get all of the items out of the bag, and one by one check them off the screen as they place the items back in the bag until they find the item that was not scanned...
I agree that self-checkout is the most ingenious POS invention of our lifetime and if a store has one I almost always use it. But I have to scan the lines for "self-checkout" savvy looking people before I feel comfortable that my blood pressure isn't about to sky rocket.

you guys bring up good points about the self check out and is exactly the type of stuff I was talking about. I'll try to recreate some of my rant here:
SELF CHECK OUT LANE PEEVES
if you're old, don't use a self check out. the technology is too advanced for you, you are slow, and you will most likely try to pay with a check. go to a real life person cashier
if you have to use a CART, do not go to the self check out lane. you have too much stuff. self check out lanes should be for people with hand held baskets. ****this could go the other way around though. if you have a cart and only have a few items that are big, that's ok. if you have a handheld basket that is jam packed with items, then that is not ok.
moms, it's not cute nor is it a game to have your kids help you with the self check out machine. they are too slow, will mess up, and might even spill something. don't do it. buy them a playskool cashier machine.
if you still cannot grasp how to use a self check out machine, just don't use it, period. go to a cashier, they are more your speed.
that's all i can remember, for now :p: :lol
I got so tired of waiting for people in the self checkout I stopped using it.
Another rule, if you have a very light weight item be sure you press down when you are placing it in the bag or the stupid machine will keep saying, "Please place the item in the bag."

It's supposed to be 20 items or less. Sometimes if there is no line and I have a cart with 20 items or so I will use it but only cause I am good at it. :)

I call this 'Power Shopping'. I usually go when we are absolutely out of every thing. I've tried the once a week shopping...it just doesn't work for me. The checkers always ask me if I have a big family :lol
And HEB is pissing me off because they tend to replace some of the national brands with their products. Or they discontinue carrying it all together. I don't mind buying some of their stuff, but I do have a loyalty to certain brands.

Baggers? Huh? Never seen this shit in Toronto in my life, I thought they stopped doing that in the 50s. :lol
It's funny...when you work at HEB the last night of orientation is learning to sack groceries properly. Using certain items as a border for the bags, etc. The crazy part is, you learn and that and it immediately falls to shit, once you actually work at the store. The supervisiors tell you, we're looking for speed. Well DOH, why did I just go through a week's worth of training?
Best thing to do is watch them sack and point out where you want certain things. They don't mind. Least I didn't.

I always shop in the evenings, frequently use a cart, and use self check. Most of the time, I'm getting 3 half-gallon skim Mootopias, and hate lugging a handbasket even if they fit. I rarely check out more than 10-12 items, I just want to roll through the store, not lug that stupid handbasket weighing 35 lbs.
My HEB always has the "watcher" cashier presiding over the self-check lanes. If you use the SC lanes enough, they know who you are, and just over-ride any errors without explanation. All I have to do is look at the kiosk, and give a quizzical look, and they hit their magic key, and I'm back in biz.
I hate the people that use self check, and take like half an hour to feed 35 one dollar bills into the hopper.

One thing that I have never understood since I lived here is why H-E-B (and every other place) refuses to double-bag. For example, they pack 20 canned items in one bag and then don't double-bag it. :wtf In Los Angeles, they automatically double-bag anything that's even slightly heavy. Here even if I ask them to double-bag one particular bag, they cop a big attitude or act like they don't know what I'm talking about.
What's so hard about double-bagging heavy bags?
Anyway, to answer the thread, I sometimes bag my own stuff if there's no bagger.

Matthew says the reason they don't double bag stuff automatically is because HEB is trying to go "Green" and is trying to do away with paper and plastic bag use as much as possible. That is why they want you to buy those cloth bags you can use over and over. They teach their baggers to stuff as much as possible in each bag and not to waste bags.

We were checking out and I usually keep an eye on the screen to make sure they are ringing up the right price but hubby and I got into a discussion of whether we needed more rock salt or not. Anyway, my bill was around $250. I paid because it is not unusual to spend $$$$ at the grocery store. It did seem kind of high though and I glanced at my receipt and saw $94.30 by the brisket. There is a difference between not wasting bags and stuffing too much into them. I also hate when they don't want to put things into bags. Just yesterday, I bought 6 2-lt bottles and asked specifically for paper bags. The guy starts to put each bottle into my cart loose and I look at him and he says-- oh, you want these in a bag? Then I look and he has my eggs piled on top of a bag full of unevenly packed groceries and my bread crammed on top of some stuff hanging out of the bag. I rebagged it. I hate, too, when I ask for paper bags but then they insist that I want my produce in plastic- or my refrigerated items in plastic... No- if I ask for paper bags, I want paper bags. They also like to pull the old-- we are out of paper bags. A bagger told me once that he basically was supposed to make it as hard as possible for someone to get paper bags. WTF??
Kori- as a kid they used to double bag all the time. But like you said, now they cop an attitude if you ask for anything but those plastic bags. I hate those plastic bags. And I hate having to ask for paper bags 3 or 4 times before they seem to get that I would like my groceries neatly put into paper bags-- I even make it easy for them. I group my stuff on the conveyor belt-the heavy stuff first; the cans and boxes together; the refrigerated stuff together; the non-food items together; the bread, eggs, cookies at the end... I understand it's not a glamorous job, but some high school kid can comprehend it. I blame HEB for pounding into them about the bag count or something. And surely someone can teach them not to put bleach in the same bag as my food.

Target is the $50 club and Costco is the $100 club. It's pretty much a given that you will spend those amounts at those stores.
