View Full Version : Mike Breen said that because he doesn't know

I watch NBA TV, probably like a lot of other posters here.

I thought it was hilarious when Andre Aldridge asked Fred Carter about Mike Breen's comment that Okur was playing "great defense" on Tim Duncan.

Fred said that "Mike Breen only said that because he doesn't know."

He pointed out that Okur can't possibly play Tim Duncan one on one in the post without lots and lots of help.

I despise ABC and their commentators, Mark Jackson, a hater and biased, Breen, just a bad commentator, and Jon, who's trying to appear unbiased by hating on the Spurs.

Hubie is the only good one of that group.

I put on ESPN Deportes channel 211 here in San Marcos or listen to the radio broadcasting the game.

It was nice to see that "the truth was told".

esp Marv.

Kerr's ties to the Pistons (and the Suns?) leaves his loyalties in doubt.

Where are some quality, honest brokers ?

If he can't possibly do it, how is Okur playing defense on Duncan so effectively, then?

with help defense.

There are several players coming over to help most of the time.

When Tim is allowed to isolate and work 1 on 1 against Okur, he scores most of the time.

So, the Jazz are forced to send double or triple teams.

There are only one or two players who can consistently play good defense in the post 1 on 1 against Tim; one is Sheed and the other is KG, but Tim's strength helps.

Okur isn't a great defender. Tim is one of the best post players to ever play basketball.

You're watching the games, you must have seen all of the double and triple teams.

With 2 or 3 other defenders helping, can Okur have some limited success against Tim? Yes

Without 2 or 3 other defenders helping, can Okur have some limited success against Tim? No, not in any significant way.

Okur is playing decent one on one position D, but he constantly reaches and hacks down on the hands. That's the part of his D that sucks because in crunch time 4th Q most of those hacks you got away with in the 1st 3 Q are gonna get called. It's too obvious of a foul when you slap down on someone's hands.

He and Jackson are great together, and Breen knows more about basketball than most analysts, including Fred Carter.

Granted, most of these guys come off as tools, but I doubt any of us could do better. They are paid to speak non-stop for two hours and be entertaining, a large portion of that time has to be random B/S.

It was posted in here recently and I think on TNT as well that Kerr had been doing some work for them, as a writer I think.

But someone else can fact check that. That's just what I understood.

I could talk for 2 hours but I'd have to be buzzed. I could definitely not do it sober.

Without help, he has been stopping Tim 1 on 1 ?

I've watched every game and I have not seen that happening on any sort of regular basis.

I don't think anyone here thinks that Okur could defend Tim Ducan 1 on 1 without help in the post 50 times without Timmy scoring on 35 to 40 of them.

Maybe more.

If anyone thinks that Okur is one of the best big man defenders in the history of basketball (which is what this would be saying [ Okur can effectively guard Tim Duncan in the post 1 on 1 without help]), please stay after school for tutoring. Thank you.

NOONE can stop Duncan 1 on 1. are you serious!???!

noone alive can do it. But he has been doing a pretty good job still. as good as a big man can.

so I would say the statement "he is playing pretty good D on Duncan" is pretty valid.

Um, I've seen Timmy struggle the last two games. If he isn't scoring and the Spurs aren't getting wide open threes, then where's the double team coming from? Okur has been playing him one on one a lot of this series and Duncan has struggled with it when the Spurs aren't passing the ball and moving. Duncan is one of the most dominant players ever and Okur has played him as well as anyone could expect. The help is coming to strip the ball away if he waits too long to make his move or it's coming from the weakside to try to block his shots. Duncan hasn't been going to the line a lot and the only reason he did in the fourth quarter of game 4 is because the Spurs completely changed their offense to run through him and Manu, and he was finally able to get the defenders out of position. He played most of that quarter with Boozer on him because Okur was in foul trouble.

WHo has? Duncan has struggled more with Okur as his primary defender than he did against Camby. Hard to conclude that Okur isn't playing pretty good defense.

Okur is playing as good a defense as possible. He is getting help as every team has to do, but he is doing a Yeoman's job, IMO.

We probably agree more than we disagree.

So, what I am seeing is that they do not allow Tim to make more than two dribbles without help.

and they are ready to rotate when Tim kicks the ball out to the person throwing the entry pass. So, it must be passed around. Then Vaughn misses the open jumper. ...

No One can guard Tim 1 on 1, without help.
Okur is part of the No One.
So we agree.

We also agree that Okur with help is doing as well as most other good big men defenders would do with help.

I can agree with that.

So, it's all about how we are saying things, but I think we all agree.

The only announcer worse than Breen is Al Micheals and thank god he's history. I don't mind Van Gundy or Jackson but Breen is absolutley horrible. His hatred for the Spurs is so palpable you could slice it with a knife. How I wish the WCF and Finals were on TNT. Kevin Harlan or Marv Albert would be a huge improvement over Breen.
