I want to get a new haircut and style.. i have had the same hair stylist in Houston for a few years. so I'm kind of nervous now going to a new one here. Are there any good places you've experienced in the NW side of town that is not pricey? I was looking into Great Hair Studio and that place looks nice and has good ratings. just wanted to see if there were more suggestions out there though...

I like Jessica at Jeanette's in Stone Oak, but they've gotten a little pricy.

There's also a guy at Visual Changes at North Star Mall that's pretty awesome, and they are way cheaper than Jeanette's....but that's not really Northwest.

My friend cuts my hair, but another friend went to Mane Street Salon. It's at the corner of Babcock/Eckhert. Her hair always looks great and she was constantly changing styles. I think my friend said their prices were pretty reasonable and her stylest's name is Cyndi.

My friend was bummed cuz she just moved up to the Dallas area and has to find a new stylist.

I'm sure you'll look beautiful no matter where you go, just don't go to Rios...

Haha one time I went to Rios when I was a little kid and they shaved my head when I asked for a side spike. Fucking morons. But then Nacho Estrada came to my school and he let me go on stage and play air guitar and shit. Good times.

Why are you so interested in a place on the NW side?

It's not like you get a hair cut daily or weekly, I wouldn't limit myself to one area of town....

yeah you're right, i thought about that after i read Spurswoman's post. I guess I still have that Houston mentality that the other side of town takes an hour and a half to get to :lol but S.A. is small compared to that and I guess I would not mind driving a little farther...

10 Signs You Need a Hair Makeover
Pro clues it's time to redo your 'do
By Laurie Campbell

SIGN #1
Your hair has no volume.
The top is flat, the sides are bulky, and it no longer frames your features. "If your hair just sits there, even after you've blown it dry, set it or curled it, at the very least get a trim," says Mark Garrison of the eponymous New York City salon.

SIGN #2
Your high school friends assure you that "you haven't changed a bit!"
Guess what? It's probably time to do just that, says Sam Brocato of the hair-care company Brocato America. Start getting inspired by collecting images of cuts you'd consider. Revisit them weekly until you can picture living with one of them...next, schedule an appointment.

SIGN #3
Your highlights are more noticeable than your base color.
"This is an indication that your highlights have become too heavy," says Garrison. The fix? Consider a single process to cover the streaks and lay off new highlights for at least three months. (Don't worry, some of the lighter bits will naturally show through, giving you a subtler, sun-kissed effect.)

SIGN #4
You're not receiving compliments on your hair anymore.
One simple tweak sure to garner attention is to set your strands in hot rollers, suggests Federico Calce of Federico Salon in New York City. "Of all the heat-styling tools, they produce the softest, sexiest waves."

SIGN #5
Your hair and skin tone match.
If your tress and skin tones have become too close, you could benefit from lowlights, says Garrison. Add deeper, warmer streaks using peroxide and ammonia-free color to give your look loads of dimension without damaging your hair.

SIGN #6
Your clothes have evolved; your hair hasn't.
According to Brocato, altering your clothing style is the perfect excuse to update your 'do. This way, your new look will work from head to toe - literally. For example, if you've recently lost weight and are finally sporting all those curve-hugging clothes previously relegated to the back of your closet, you might want to get a sleeker, more face-flattering coif.

SIGN #7
Two words: Brillo pad.
Lopping off significant length may be the only way to eliminate dryness. But in the meantime, switch to a cream-based styler (such as Kiehl's Creme with Silk Groom) to add moisture to your hair, which will render it more supple and less apt to break.

SIGN #8
You pull your hair into a ponytail all the time.
Garrison suggests adding bangs or layers to give your locks some shape - that way, you'll be more apt to wear them down.

SIGN #9
You spend more than 20 minutes styling your hair.
If it takes this long, your cut is clearly not making the most of your texture. A fast fix: Get your stylist to create 'dos that work with your curls (like long layers) or that boost your lank locks (like a blunt bob).

SIGN #10
Your stylist could cut your hair with her eyes closed.
Sounds like someone's in a rut (not just you) - seek out fresh eyes/scissors.

The easiest way to keep current? Start with a versatile cut, then alter your texture and color as often as you like! For a look like the one shown here, begin with long layers and use volumizing spray on your roots.
Try: Phytovolume Actif Volumizer Spray for fine or limp hair.

I can guarantee that the pictures PM5K posted have been set with hot rollers. That's fine if you want to deal with that daily.

A lot of people will bring in pictures that just won't work for their type of hair and hopefully you will have a stylist that will tell you that no matter how much you like the cut.

Is your hair the same style in the picture with Midge? I would get some framing layers around your face, maybe even a long side swept bang. That way it will give you a little more volume and i think it would look really cute on you.

Exactly...I don't get a style for anyone but myself.

I remember the first time I got my hair cut here in Texas. My hair was one length past my shoulders and I got it cut short. The stylist was all, "What's your husband going to say? Is he going to be mad?" I was all, "He doesn't care!"

I'll chop my hair off and then grow it out forever. The first time my friend cut my hair (after not having it cut for over a year and totally sun and chlorine damaged), she said, "You're hair looks like shit!" :lol and she was right!

:lol 4 or 5 years ago I went to Supercuts to get the bottom 10 or so inches hacked off because I had destroyed my hair dyeing it all the time (there was nothing else to do in the dorm). The woman at Supercuts looked at my hair and said, "Holy shit, girl, have you been bleaching and dyeing every two weeks or something?" "Yeah, pretty much." :lmao I forgot about that Wella Cholesterol! That stuff is great!

I used to do hair and when I was in beauty school, I always volunteered to be the model. One time we had this guy come in showing us how to do color cellophanes. It was some black guy and I'm not sure if he ever worked with any other type of hair. My hair was bleach blonde at the time and he put this color cellophane on that turned it bright orange. Guess who was the model for color correction the next morning? :lol I think we had to dye it red.

Manny found my first one when I was 20 - I probably had them before then but dyed my hair too much to notice. It's pretty hard to see gray through this: http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y33/weezywantscoffee/red.jpg I met a 6yo once with a few gray hairs, that was pretty weird.

If I had dark hair, I would totally dye it that color!

My dad will be 70 in June and hardly has any gray. My mom is also 70, and even though she colors her hair, she said she doesn't have that much. But looking at my brother and sister who are 46 and 45 respectfully, they don't have any either.

I never really even noticed, and nobody ever told me, then I slept with an older woman and she went out of her way to mention it to me, they are on the side so I don't really see them until my hair is long, which it usually isn't...

:lmao I forgot about that Wella Cholesterol!

:lol The first time I bleached my hair it turned that crazy bright orange and scared the hell out of my mother. I also dyed mine red after that - the Clairol professional lines always had the best permanent reds ... and I think I eventually used almost all of them. Only bad thing, though, is that red never leaves your hair. I had to grow mine out and cut all of the red ends off to finally be rid of it.

:lol

Everytime I try to go darker, it just fades out so fast. Although, my friend will use Redkin colors and they don't fade as much.

I used to have avoid ashy colors like the plague. I would just pull the green out of it. But since we have such lovely water here, it tends to turn my hair brassy and now I have to go with an ash.

Thanks! I pulled it off alright, but my best friend has really gorgeous porcelain skin and can do every color under the sun well (makes me hate her a little bit) - I have an olive complexion and look weird with black hair somehow (even though my eyebrows are naturally black ... I don't understand) but she has black hair now and looks better than I ever did with it. We used to use her hair for experimenting since she always kept it almost pixie-short - she could do the crazy anime red hair awesomely.

yeah, I'm like you then. olive skin.. when i did the black hair, i regretted it immediately. it made me look darker overall or something... the contrast just was not right, and it sucks cause with black hair you have to either get it stripped or just wait for it to wash out. i waited.. hated it for a long time though lol. it's out now than god. usually pale skinned people can do whatever they want, get any color, and it looks good.. they are lucky!

If a woman had to have short hair, I could live with either of those....
I have short hair and I get no complaints...

Is your hair the same style in the picture with Midge? I would get some framing layers around your face, maybe even a long side swept bang. That way it will give you a little more volume and i think it would look really cute on you.

When I get a haircut, I do get the layers and framed around the face cut. I'm thinking about bangs. I think I'll try the long side swept bangs like you suggested. Thanks!
