Steve Kerr will be announced as the new president of basketball operations and general manager of the Suns within the week, an NBA source with knowledge of the situation said. Current general manager Mike D’Antoni will still have a front office title in addition to his coaching duties

The source said current vice president of basketball operations David Griffin will decide tonight whether to stay with the Suns or take a similar position with the Grizzlies. The Suns want Griffin to stay and would probably give him a raise and another title. Griffin would also keep a lot of the duties for which he is currently responsible.

Kerr’s move into the front office would take a lot of the strain off D’Antoni who is not only the Suns coach but an assistant for Team USA.

Kerr is currently a minority owner in the team and a close friend of Suns owner Robert Sarver

A five-time NBA champion and 15-year veteran as a player, Steve Kerr, returns to the organization where he began his professional career.

Kerr was the Suns’ second selection in the 1988 NBA Draft (50th overall) after a four-year career at the University of Arizona. He is the league’s all-time leader in career 3-point field goal percentage, with a .454 mark (726-1599). He played his rookie season in the NBA with Phoenix in 1988-89.

Kerr won three NBA titles with the Chicago Bulls (1996, 1997 and 1998) and was a member of two San Antonio Spurs NBA championship teams (1999 and 2003). Kerr, who retired after the 2002-03 season, appeared in 910 regular season games, averaging six points, 1.8 assists and 1.2 rebounds per contests.

This past season Kerr was an NBA analyst for Turner Sports and worked in the Spurs broadcasting booth.

Kerr, who was born in Beirut, Lebanon on Sept. 27, 1965, earned his degree in general studies from Arizona in 1988.

He and wife, Margot, have three children, Nicholas, Madeleine and Matthew.

He can't be any worse than D'Antoni. Hopefully his "inside/outside" mantra will win out and Phoenix will finally maximize its potential. I doubt he and D'Antoni get along. Mike is a hard-headed SOB who does things his way, results be damned. Even if Kerr makes a good signing, there's no expectation of D'Antoni playing him if by doing so it requires him to actually, A. coach, B. tinker with his system, or C. scrap his system in favor of his new GMs.

Fine. But what are his managerial and talent evaluation strategies other than writing crappy little articles on Yahoo?

Does his vision of a team jive with that of D'Antoni? I'm trying to remember Kerr's career, but as far as I know he never played or was exposed as a player to a system like D'Antonis.

Bottomline: It seems like more of a flashy PR move, than a basketball move.

Good move IMO. D'Antoni has totally whiffed on personnel moves (see Marcus Banks and Boris Diaw), so we definitely needed a new general manager. As for possible conflicts with D'Antoni, with the Colangelos finally leaving Phoenix, I think that Sarver is growing a bit tired of small ball. If we don't win a championship next year, then I would highly doubt if D'Antoni still had a job. Hopefully Kerr can follow in the footsteps of guys like Paxson and Dumars as a GM.

Most Suns fans are happy to have someone other than D'Antoni making personnel decisions. Don't think the Suns can afford to lose Griffin, though.

I think it's a good move. Griffin and D'Antoni made some pretty boneheaded mistakes last summer, so the addition of Kerr will likely produce better results. I've listened to Kerr's commentary, and he's a smart guy.

As a Suns fan, I say 'Yay' to this move.

So-so. We (suns fans) expected this when Sarver took over and Kerr was part of the group.

He has the pedigree (playing at UofA and winning 5 rings in the NBA) of winning and the Suns have a solid core of players. We'll see if he can finally bring us a decent center.

D'Ant was from the Colangelo regime and the Suns will make some tweaks for next season. If they don't win the title next season D'Ant will probably be shown the door.

I like Steve Kerr's sports analysis. But if nothing else, this should end the debate once and for all about whether he's still a "Spurs homer."

Kerr was such a homer during the Suns series. Don't forget he was the infamous reporter (not) who tried to portray Duncan in the same way as Stud awhinny and Diaw. For those that think it is no big deal then I think TNT/ESPN should let Sean Elliott do all the Spurs future play by play.
