Help with Avitar?

I've been trying to upload a custom avatar and it keeps telling me its to big. I've resized it several times and it still wont work. Usually I'm really good with this kind of thing but I have no idea whats going on. So if anyone can help me and tell me how to make an avi I'd appreciate it.
