"Soft" -kh sound, like the -ch in German.

I call him Bueno everytime he makes a good play which is quite often these last couple of games. It's becoming more and more clear why Holt was reluctant to pull the trigger on Tony's contract. Noy saying we don't need Tony but you know what I mean.

Johnny_Blaze_47
12-02-2004, 01:20 AM
I think it had more to do with Holt being a cheap-ass, but your opinion could have merit in about a season or so.

We were talking afterwords that even Beno pronounces it different at times. He told the Spurs announcers that it's OOO DRAH.

Oh well, I call him Beno.

Pop's "nothing, nothing" was about if anything surprised him about Beno's play. I also was the one asking him about the upcoming game with the Pistons.

Ah...well, maybe he wants it that way...maybe OO DRAH means something in Slovenian...like maybe "manly stench that will fell all enemies within 100 meters" or something like that. Which would bring a whole new meaning to "Beno" as well. :lol

Pop's "nothing, nothing" was about if anything surprised him about Beno's play. I also was the one asking him about the upcoming game with the Pistons.

Thanks, Kori! :)

I didn't hear the Pistons question...:( What was the answer?

HIP HOOPERS
12-02-2004, 12:21 PM
Let me give you a hand about how to pronounce "Udrih"... Well, the closest you get is when you say it "OO-drick", i think you just don't have the way or word that would help pronounce "h" at the end the proper way... Doesn't matter, "OO-drick" is close enough... :) B.t.w. "OO-drah" doesn't mean anything in our language, but the original "udrih" kinda means "strike!" if only you say it (or write it) without the "h" at the end...

Marcus Bryant
12-02-2004, 12:25 PM
The correct pronounciation is Ooh-dree-k with the k at the end being very soft.

The only thing I'd add is that you let the soft k linger a little, like a fade at the end of a song.

I heard him pronounce it on FSSW , I think the same place Travis did...and he said it very slowly to make sure it was understood how to say it...I went back and listened to it several more times...

Travis nailed it in the first post...at least for me.

HIP HOOPERS
12-02-2004, 12:38 PM
It doesn't mater.... just call him Beno and it'll be ok! :) But the way he is playing... let's call him Mozart! :)

Kori Ellis
12-02-2004, 12:39 PM
Yeah I realize that -- I was standing right there. What I am saying is that we were talking about it afterwards and saying that even Beno pronounces it differently all the time. He clearly told the Spurs announcers that it's OOO-DRAAH. He clearly told me that it's OOO-DREEH (with a very very slight h sound but no k sound at all). All of these are on tape. So everyone was laughing saying just forget it and call him BAY-NO.

There is no k sound in Udrih and that is 100%. Bay-no is probably the best pronanciation, but the last name is really tough to explain. I think someone explained it quite nice in previous thread about his last name, but i'm to lazy to scroll back :rolleyes
PS: just remembered, in spurs-utah game commentators pronounced it almost perfect so there you go :blah

Marcus Bryant
12-02-2004, 01:34 PM
In Ptuj it is certainly pronounced with an ever so slight k. For American speakers one must explain it this way or else they would ignore the -h totally and would pronounce it as Ooh-dree.

whottt
12-02-2004, 01:47 PM
MB actually gets it ^^^^

The phonetic mental image of how to say the word is different for Slovenians than it is for Americans. Your language and it sounds are different than ours.

You guys are some serious hard K and H users over there in that part of the world...we aren't over here...that's why we picture saying the word differently and have to be guided in how to get the sound. The image may even be different for some Americans because it is an unusal sound...

But I think to most Americans...if you say the word the way Travis spelled it out...you will get the sound out of the H that the Slovenians expecting to hear.

It's just like when I studied French and the teacher was trying to teach us how to say the huhuhuah sound...she kept trying to spell it out for us and finally she said just collect a bunch of spit in the back of your throat and blow air through it...we got it.

And here is how Beno himself says it: Link to video. (http://videoimg.woai.com/htm/woai4player.htm?Art_ID=57122)

There is no need for the k substitution at the end if you can say "hello" you can say Udrih (try saying oodree-hello and just leave the "ello" part out).

Americans don't say hello like we are hocking up a loogey...

My french hua analogy is a better way of pronouncing it...and saying it the way Travis spelled it out in his initial post will still get the same sound from an American vocal cord.

Why are you lumping the Slovenians together? They seem come in all types of personalities...

You got Slo- He's the feisty one
Slomo - He's the artistic ladies man type
Darius - The friendly one that probably likes to party..a lot
Karl Mundt - The one that would probably disect your brain and sell your organs on the black market if you stayed at his house for the weekend..
Hiphop - The kid

My french hua analogy is a better way of pronouncing it...and saying it the way Travis spelled it out in his initial post will still get the same sound from an American vocal cord. It does not have to be very prominent (like hocking up a loogey - for lack of a better description) just as it is in the word hello. Listen to Beno in the video he empahsises it for the reporter and its still quite subtle.
Anyway it's not that important, it's just that it is much easier than you are making it to be (not just you Whottt, but everybody including the media).

Welcome to the Forum, Hip Hoopers. A friend of Beno's is a friend of ours. :)

Seriously, Beno is a great guy. When I first interviewed him in the summer in Utah, I was struck by how incredibly nice he is. He's got a great demeanor.

And obviously, he's developing into a solid ball player for the Spurs.

HIP HOOPERS
12-02-2004, 05:04 PM
Well, thanks for the welcome... first to answer MB-i don't think you're gonna see Beno offten slamin it into the rim... Not that he couldn't (he really did a good work during summer, and can dunk it like i've never seen him before), he just isn't that kind of a player...but if he'll get a chance...you can count on it! :)
Well, Beno is kind of a "charmer" in a way i know that... on the court quiet on the outside but burning on the inside with confidence....i think you'll se a lot from him this year...
p.s. see ya in S.A on march! :)
