"As I look at the entire grouping of the 10 teams, it's going to be very competitive. For basketball fans you couldn't ask for more. You can sit and watch great international basketball for a couple of weeks and get your fill," said Jerry Colangelo, Managing Director of the USA Basketball Men's Senior National Team.
"I think it's huge to be playing this championship in Las Vegas. I was very excited when word came down that USA Basketball would be hosting this tournament in the United States because it's going to be a factor, I really believe it. The energy in the building behind your team could be the difference and I think Las Vegas will be very supportive. Last summer we played Puerto Rico in a game that sold out Thomas and Mack, there was great energy in the building, and I think it could be a factor when we get down to the semifinals and the finals."
The USA, competing in preliminary round Group B, will open play Aug. 22 against Venezuela at 8:00 p.m. (all times are Las Vegas local times-PDT), and will meet the U.S. Virgin Islands at 8:00 p.m. on Aug. 23, Canada at 12:00 p.m. on Aug. 25, and will cap its preliminary round play against South America rival Brazil on Aug. 26 at 6:00 p.m.
