Report: Sonics expected to name Presti as GM
June 5, 2007
SEATTLE (TICKER) -- The Seattle SuperSonics are close to naming Sam Presti as their new general manager, the Seattle Times reported Tuesday on its web site.
According to the report, Presti - the assistant general manager for the San Antonio Spurs - is expected to receive a formal offer within the next day or so. The 30-year-old Presti joined the Spurs as an intern in 2000 before taking his current role in September of 2005.
The newspaper also reported that SuperSonics president Lenny Wilkens intends to begin formal interviews next week to fill the team's coaching vacancy. Former Pacers coach Rick Carlisle, former Timberwolves coach Dwane Casey and current Spurs assistant coach P.J. Carlesimo reportedly are at the top of Wilkens' list of candidates.
Seattle went 31-51 to finish last in the Northwest Division of this past season, a campaign marred by long-term injuries to leading scorers Ray Allen and Rashard Lewis.
However, the Sonics own the rights to the second overall pick in this month's NBA draft and hope to land either center Greg Oden or forward Kevin Durant.
