New rivals?
Forget the Alamo. San Antonio's got nothing on us.
Wednesday, June 06, 2007
John Campanelli
Plain Dealer Reporter
The NBA Finals start Thursday, plenty of time to bone up on San Antonio and its basketball team.

How does our new rival compare with our city? San Antonio is growing, with a strong economy and lots of jobs – right where our politicians promise us Cleveland will be. Some day.

Both cities are packed with things to do, places to see and interesting history. Cleveland was founded by a surveyor; San Antonio by a saint: Anthony of Padua, the patron saint of things lost –items, articles and four games this series.

How the two cities stack up:

San Antonio: Famous River Walk is glamorized muddy water.
Cleveland: Famous Rock Hall immortalized Muddy Waters.

SA: State was home of LBJ, former president.
Cleve: State is home of LBJ, current king.

SA: Hometown of the politician who won't go away: Alberto Gonzalez.
Cleve: Hometown of the politician who won't go away: Dennis Kucinich.

SA: Mud Festival every January.
Cleve: Election Day every November.

SA: Citizens know two languages: English and Spanish.
Cleve: Citizens know two languages: English and whatever it is that Mike Trivisonno speaks.

SA: Home to one major-league sports team.
Cleve: Home to two major-league sports teams. And the Browns.

SA: Home of the world's only toilet seat museum.
Cleve: Home of King James' throne.

SA: Signature food, Tex-Mex, requires an hour in the bathroom.
Cleve: Signature food, the pierogi, requires an hour on the treadmill.

SA: Place where Davy Crockett, in coonskin cap, was killed.
Cleve: Place where James Traficant, in coonskin toupee, was convicted.

SA: Boasts the world's largest pair of cowboy boots.
Cleve: Boasts the world's largest rubber stamp.

SA: Spurs guard Tony Parker known for his girlfriend, Eva Longoria.
Cleve: Cavs guard Daniel Gibson known for his nickname, “Boobie.”

SA: Home of the Alamo.
Cleve: Home of a lotta mo'.

No, that's the San Antonio inferiority complex. San Antonio has spent decades as the red-headed stepchild compared to Dallas and Houston, and now Austin, and its people are sensitive to any perceived slights against the city. It has nothing to do with basketball.

One post about the guy being an idiot (only post trashing the article) and now it's an inferiority complex? :lol

No one got insulted by that article.

However, it's only natural whenever someone does insult or trash your city that you defend it, esp, when it seems from a lame bias hatred or ignorance. I have friends in the Bay Area (San Fran side) who said the city got worked up over Barkey's comments from a few weeks ago. It's only natural.

Go to a Rockets forum and do that, go to any active Houston forum and post that.

This is what you will get:

1. You'd be brand new so they'd rag on you for being a dumb troll, probably insult your mother, ban you.

2. If they didn't ban you and got you to tell them where you live, they'd go off on your city.

3. If you're known there, as in case 2, and the posters knew where you lived they'd begin to insult your city.

I love living here, but I love SA as well. My kids were born there and I have family buried there.

Make a crack about Houston to the locals and they will join in and give you three more. It's just the way that they embrace their city.

I can say this because I am guilty of it myself: SA tries too hard to make people like them, then has a hard time accepting when people don't.

Hey, I'm a San Antonian. I understand. I still find myself defending SA to people who drop the stereotypes, and I left right after the '99 title. I was just pointing out that we have a tendency to do that, unlike in Houston, Dallas or even Austin. But it has always been an uphill struggle for SA to even get her fellow Texans to recognize, so the complex is for the most part baked into the native mentality.
