It looks like its almost a done deal for Prsti to go to Seattle.

Do you think the Spurs should/will receve compensation for Presti, because I think he is still under contract. I'm sure if we did, all we could get would be a second rounder, but Seattle does have 2 picks in the second rouond & they are numbers 31 & 35. There is nothing definite that has said he accepted the job & the Spurs could still try to keep him by offering him a better position & more money, but I think we should at least get a second round pick as compensation.

I don't believe that is applicable for promotions.

Don't think the Spurs will get compensation. They've never gotten compensation before.

It's pretty damn weak of Presti to be jumping ship in the middle of the Finals. If the Sonics are really committed to him, you'd think they could keep it on the down low until after the Finals were over.

And really, waiting three weeks until after the draft is probably the most respectful thing Presti could do. A trained monkey can go pick Durant number two for Seattle. And the Sonics' second round pick is two spots ahead of the Spurs' second round pick, so I imagine that the scouting the Spurs have paid for over the last couple years will now reap benefits for the Sonics.

I already suggested Presti and Carlesimo for the #2 pick.

That will definitely hurt....

Promotions don't get compensations. I believe the Heat are just being assholes and won't get anything for Van Gundy going to Orlando - they're just dicks.

This does suck.

To me, it's the main problem.
A fair thing would be that Spurs swap the 33rd with the 31st.

Trust your instincts with that second round pick Sammy...the next Karaualov is out there. Go with your heart ;)

Will someone please point me to a draft pick or something that gives me a reason to be disappointed this guy is leaving. I hear a lot of saying this guy is good, I don't see very much proof. I don't see anything that makes losing him hurt. I'm more worried about losing PJ at this point....

Not applicable for promotions? I dont understand? Presti is getting a new job with another team & he is still under contract with the Spurs I believe. I said promotion in the sense that the Spurs could offer Presti one, giving him a choice of either going to a new team or getting a new position with his current one. NY got compensated from Miami when Riley jumped ship. Maybe its only for coaches, & not FO personnel?

I'm not sure what everyone is pissed off about?

I'm sure the feelings were mutual between the Spurs and Sonics as to getting the whole process over and done with as soon as possible.

Does this mean Presti does not get a ring if we win?

Presti was the guy who was the expert on the CBA and the cap-- the guy who came up with creative ways to structure contracts-- with provisions that would keep a team from matching a contract-- with trades that could turn Danny Ferry's retirement into Hedo and Mercer.

That's what I've been trying to point out to people. People seem to thinking that he scouted Elson and brought him here. When actually he just worked out his contract details. As far as I know the guy that he scouted hard and wanted was Tony Parker. Mahinmi is RC's. Presti picked Karalouv I believe, but that was without seeing him.

The loss in Presti is his contract structuring, trade details, and developments in scouting (like the computer evaluation system that he created and is around the league now). It's not as much in actual scouting.

Like you mentioned, he worked out the Ferry deal, the Rasho deal, etc.

eh...maybe pop and rc could still call him up on his personal cell for "friendly advice"? Like ask him about his family and stuff, then segue right into contract questions.

I could understand why the sonics and sam wanted it done now though. The draft is a very important part of a team's season--esp. for the sonics this year. If Sam goes to seattle after the draft, he completely misses out on an integral part of his job description there and is stuck for the whole season with decisions he didn't make. So yeah, I could see the logic in it, and I'm sure the Spurs did too. It just kinda sucks for the Spurs, I guess.

Maybe they worked out some sort of agreement as to certain Spurs prospects being off limits to the sonics???

Even if the most important pick is a lock no matter who's the gm, i think it's also like a...ummm...player being present for a team's pre-season camp?

Presti's gotta be in uniform and ready to go for the sonics from training camp on...haha...I just thought of that one espn commercial a long time ago with the anchors acting like players (post-game interviews in the locker-room, etc).

As far as I know the guy that he scouted hard and wanted was Tony Parker. Mahinmi is RC's.

I think you are confusing the Frenchmen.

Within a couple of years, Mahinmi was playing for the youth team in Le Havre, a port city about 60 miles west of Rouen. Presti first saw him three years ago, while scouting a tournament in Evry. Mahinmi spent much of the night on the bench, but even then he looked intriguing.

Mahinmi made more of an impression at the 2004 Under-18 European Championships in Zaragoza, Spain. Most of the scouts had come to see Johan Petro, who would go on to be a first-round pick of Seattle. Mahinmi, however, played more than expected because of an injury to one of his teammates. He also played well.

Presti liked what he saw and marked Mahinmi as a player the Spurs should continue to follow.

R.C. Buford knew the first time he saw Tony Parker play that he was going to be a star. Convincing Gregg Popovich was another matter.

Popovich, head coach of the San Antonio Spurs and the team's general manager at the time, was not impressed after watching the French teenager get manhandled in a private workout in 2001, calling him "just another little skinny guy."

Buford, serving as Popovich's assistant general manager, believed in Parker and wouldn't take no for an answer.

He had a second-year intern, Sam Presti, make a tape of Parker.

"Once Pop watched it and saw Tony could do all of the things he thought he couldn't do, it opened his eyes a bit," Buford says. "And the second time Tony came through, five minutes into the workout, Pop grabbed everybody to the side and said, 'This guy will start for us 10 games into his rookie year.'
"
As a result of Buford's persistence, the Spurs selected Parker with the 28th and last first-round pick in the 2001 draft. Parker was starting by the fifth game.

"If it wasn't for R.C., I wouldn't be here," said the two-time NBA All-Star, a significant piece of the Spurs' past two NBA titles.

But yeah, you are right that Presti was awesome at contracts. He's regarded around the league as one of the best salary cap magicians. If a trade can happen, Presti will find the way to get it done.

As far as straight up scouting, I think the only true blue Presti selections were Mahinmi and Karaulov.

This past summer, Vaughn was a Pop selection and Butler was signed due to a Hollinger tip. I don't know who gets the credit for Elson.

The Spurs will miss the salary cap expertise that Presti had, that's for sure. Hopefully they have another young gun in the wings ready to pick up the slack.

Then he's responsible for both of them (I didn't remember about Mahinmi) because I know he's the one who compiled the tapes on Parker and had RC and Pop to look further.

What scares me is that pick at number 31. He can use the Spurs' scouting and prep to take something the Spurs planned to take at 33.

I don't think that 'll happen.
Surely there's a gentleman agreement between him and the spurs about the picks..
At least i hope so..

sounds like the only credit Presti deserves for Parker is doing what Buford directed him to do with FinalCut or Premiere or reel-to-reel or whatever it is they used back in 2001.
