Matt talked about how they reacted to the 8 day layoff. He stated that it was a good defensive effort and offensively maybe the timing was a little off. Tony and Manu got inside and got some good layups to loosen up. Went through a drought in the second but Pop got them back in it.
They did a good job of controlling Lebron. Every time he puts the ball on the floor we are throwing guys at him and making him make reads to make the other guys beat us.
Reporter talked about the veteran leadership of the Spurs. Matt said that he has felt that throughout the season. They have to trust the game plan that Pop has put together. Pop wants them to close out hard against the other shooters like Marshall.
Matt said they are playing the %s and they can't take away everything. We're going to try to take Lebron away and over a 7 game series can the other guys hit enough shots to beat us for 4 games. We're playing that they can't. We're going to stick with this game plan.
Reporter asked him about Tony Parker...is it fair that there may be co-MVPs on this team? Matt said yeah, Tony does things that open Tim. He said that Gibson and Lebron can't control him. They are trying to make him shoot jumpers but they can't control him.
Matt talked about the huge ovation from the fans during the intros. He talked about media day and how it's being covered by everyone across the world. Matt talked about how he didn't even get in the game but he went to a restaurant with his dad and his brother and the restaurant exploded clapping.
Talked about the beard. He's superstitious about the beard. He has did this since HS. Matt won the beard contest during the rodeo road trip.
Going to talk about the Tonight Show appearance by the Spurs and also tomorrow's game after the break.
They played the clip from the Tonight Show with Jay Leno that Matt asking about what he had to do to make the cut to get on the program. Matt said that not getting much playing time helps getting to ham it up. They were looking for someone and he said that he was free since he didn't have many people wanting to interview him so he was available. This little old lady comes up to ask some questions so he turned on the comedy. He said that he went into the family room after the game and got to watch the second part where he picked her up.
Matt said the cookies weren't as good as he thought it would be. They were lemony cookies and he said that they were dry.
Reporter about the nuns that pray for the team at the game. Matt said he had no clue about them. Said that Spurs are a religion down there. He gets treated like Jordan and he doesn't even play. Said that the Spur fans were great.
Reporter asked about his Finals memories. He talked about watching the great Celtics then the Bulls and Pistons. He said that it's a dream come true to be experiencing it. Reporter asked about 86 Celtics against 07 Spurs. Bonner said that the Spurs could steal a game or two in the Garden. Bruce would guard Bird and Duncan on Parrish with Oberto on McHale. Matt said the Celtics couldn't guard Manu and Tony.
Reporter asked about Tony and the wedding. Matt said that he's pretty sure that he's paying a wedding planner to handle all that and Eva was involved.
Reporter asked about the Donovan/UF Gators situation. Matt said that Coach Donovan realized that his heart is in Florida. He said that it's better to make a short term mistake than to make a 5 year mistake and go some place that you don't want to go. He said that he corrected it as soon as possible.
Reporter asked about the Cavs coming back in the next couple games. Matt said they were probably playing tight and they will loosen up and play their brand of ball. Spurs didn't shoot well. Look for the Spurs to come out and play better because they are back into the flow now. Reporter said that he thinks it will be a short series.
Matt said that they have to hold serve then go to Cleveland for 3 games. Spurs are a good road team and he doesn't think they can beat them 3 games in a row. He said that they need to win at least one in Cleveland so they can go back to SA and celebrate.
He's not scrapbooking or doing a diary about the Finals. A few things is all he needs to remember the memories.
Coach Pop has been preaching not to get too high or too low during all this.
