Yeah, Dallas had just scored to go up by 2 and Harkness took the inbounds pass near the endline and chucked it. 3-pointer at the buzzer. It is recognized in Springfield.

And even worse the Chaps fans thought the game was only tied...at least according to the article I just read.

I shoulda called my Dad since he was a Chaps fan back then and we lived in Dallas when it happened...I'll have to ask him about that game and see if he remembers it.

Okay, I will leave a hint on the Spur who had to wear a Bullets away uni with jersey inside-out. Here's a pic. If you can identify the player, you get credit any way.

It took me a while to find the pic, BTW.

Damn, I woulda gotten this one. My suitemate in college was from DC so we spent the whole series trying to pick up the games in Boston from either WOAI (which sometimes carried up there) or the DC AM station.

Otherwise, we had to listen for the CBS Newsradio hourly sports update to find the score. You Internet youngsters have no idea what it was like back in the dark ages.

Damn, you guys are taking me back down memory lane.

As already answered, the Celtics swept the Spurs 2-0 in 1978 in what was then the first-round miniseries. It was the first NBA playoff series in San Antonio history, and the only time the Spurs played the Celtics in the playoffs.

The Celtics had swept the Spurs in the regular season, and in one of the games at the HemisFair Dave Cowens and some others went into the stands to fight some fans (yes, Virginia, Ron Artest was not the first, and not even close to being the worst).

Boston beat the Spurs handily in game one, but the HemisFair was ROCKING for game 2. The Spurs got a 2-3 minute standing ovation from the crowd before they were even introduced (this was before the light show/video/annoying PA guy days).

The game was pretty tight the whole way, but you always felt the Celtics were in control. At one point when emotions really got hot, Celtic coach Tommy Heinsohn actually walked out onto the court while a Spur (?Gale) was about to shoot free throws and grabbed the ball from him. The crowd went beserk and I and one of my friends actually lept up and ran down about 6-7 steps towards the court before we thought better of it. (We still talk about that to this day.)

The Celtics were like the Lakers of those days and the spineless refs, of course, didn't even call a technical on Heinsohn. And for the rest of the game he had them pretty much cowed. I had always hated the Celtics, but I despised Heinsohn from that day forward.

Who is Norm Drucker, and what is his significance to Spurs history? I'll give a hint: the answer lies in the last ABA playoffs.

You weren't even born yet, but you're pretty close to right. Game 4 of the 1976 ABA Semifinals between the New York Nets and the San Antonio Spurs, was a strange game filled with fights and drama. SA lead 2 games to 1 in the best of 7. Early in the 2nd Quarter, George Karl and Brian Taylor got mixed up. Former Spur Rich Jones jumped in a bloodied both Karl, Allen Bristow, and Larry Kenon.

After everything settled down, the Spurs managed to grab a 1-point lead with less than 20 seconds to go. At that juncture, Jones (who had somehow avoided an ejection) missed a jumper. When George Gervin had the rebound, Taylor of the Nets stripped the ball away. Julius Erving picked up the loose ball, dunked it, and got the and-1, making a one point Spurs lead a 2-point Nets lead. Drucker was the official on the spot and he made no call on Taylor's strip. The Spurs argued that Taylor was standing out of bounds when he made the strip, and replays showed that they were right. Instead of going up 3 games to 1, the Spurs were forced to go back to Long Island tied 2 a piece, and had to play without James Silas, who had broken an ankle.

Many still believe that Drucker's non-call cost the Spurs their first championship appearance, and might very well have cost them a title.

Just to get this one over with, the answer is Ski Jones (Askia Jones) who played some games with the T'Wolves in the mid-90's. He's the son of Wali Jones, who started at PG for the 1967 Sixers championship team.

FWIW -- Ski owns a 62 point game (including 45 in the second half, 28 of which came in the first 7 mintues of that half) in the 1994 NIT for Kansas State against Fresno State -- a game in which he hit an NCAA post-season record 14 three pointers, including 9 straight.

1999 WCSF v. LAL (4-0)

Still a 4th guy that never finished lower than second.

Still two other guys need to be named that finished in the top 10 in 5 different stat cats...before Drob did it.

Still need the other guy besides Drob to lead a post season in blocks and rebounds per game...those last 2 should be farily easy to answer...cheat...the same page contains the answers to both.

Me knowing pointless Spurs trivia actually came in handy the other day. :drunk

After the home game against the Magic, I stayed after the game (while I was waiting for Kori to finish her interviews) to watch "Chalk Talk" with Robert Horry. Chalk Talk is this post game thing the Spurs do sometimes where they get a player to come out and Sean Elliott asks them questions.

Horry comes out and after a short introduction, Elliott asks:

"What do me and Robert Horry have in common?"

Right away I knew what he was talking about. But then people in the crowd (it was about 1000 peeps) started guessing. Horrible guesses. Everything from "You both went to a college that started with an 'A'" to "You are both sons in the eyes of God" to "You both like to shoot three-pointers". Elliott took like 20 different guesses. I was going to raise my hand and tell the answer but I was in the furthest back corner by myself and I had to leave any second to go meet Kori.

Then Elliott was going to say the answer and Horry told him to stop and that he wasn't going to let the Chalk Talk begin without someone getting this question right. So after like 10 more bad guesses, I got tired of seeing Spurs fans getting embarrassed so I raised my hand and told the correct answer. Elliott and Horry were thankful that someone got the question right and the Spurs fans around me thought I was some basketball genius.

But to me, it was a simple question. So I'll ask you:

"What do Sean Elliott and Robert Horry have in common?"

1.Name the 4 players who never finished lower than second place in their division in a season in which they were healthy(in a career spanning 10 years or more).

2.Name the players who won the first game of their careers in the regular season as a rookie and won the last game of their career in the NBA finals, playing for the same team throughout.

Well the only answer I was looking for was Russell. After doing some research I am almost certain you are right about Heinson, and Loscutoff but I think you are wrong about Ramsey. And thanks for the help on that one BTW.

Russell was good enough though.

Quesion #1. The final man that no one mentioned was Dr. J

Bird, Magic, Drob and Dr.J.

Magic was pretty impressive, he won the division every year of his career pre HIV except for 2 times .

Bill Russell and the Celtics finished 4th in their division in 68-69...I guess the Celtics cutting back on his quota of 5 other HOF teamates got to him that season. He did still win the title though...

Going to go ahead an answer these since the time limit has expired.

1.Name the 4 players who never finished lower than second place in their division in a season in which they were healthy(in a career spanning 10 years or more).

A:Drob, Magic, Dr.J and Bird.

2.Name the players who won the first game of their careers in the regular season as a rookie and won the last game of their career in the NBA finals, playing for the same team throughout.

A:Drob and Russell for sure. Probably Heinsohn and Loscutoff, Billy Gabor. Ramsey has an outside chance.

Since ABC said Drob was the 6th player in history to do it in the final game of his career, and the last was Bill Russell, I think Solid D has nailed it in an excellent job of guessing. Props to Solid D

3.Name the first 3 players to finish the season ranked in the top 10 in 5 different statistical categories.

A:David Robinson 91-92, Larry Bird 89-90, Cliff Hagan 59-60.

I believe they are still the only theee players to do it. At least according to Dave's bio at NBA.com.

4.Name the last player to shoot 1000% from the field in an NBA finals game(minimum 7 shots)

A:John Paxon. Sigh.

5.Name the only 2 players in NBA history to lead all players in blocks pg and rebounds pg in a single postseason.

A:David Robinson 97-98, Kareem Abdul Jabbar 77-78

Excellent job Travis, Stud. While the 1st one was fairly easy...the second was not, and you get props for guessing it.

Technically, the 96-97 Spurs are the worst one year turnaround in NBA history, losing 39 more games than the previous season, the largest actual mark...but the Bulls get the extrapolated mark(and frankly they have can have it).

Hey Jim are you including the ABA Spurs and Chaps in the worst winning % question? I'm not sure if it matters but 'thought I'd ask, just in case (?).

Mo is the answer, and no , only Spurs in SA.

Yes, it does matter...there were 2 Chaps coaches listed with lower W/L% than McHone...

Now that would be another tough question right there. I can remember Cliff Hagen was a player coach with the Chaps for a while and Tom Nissalke a coach...but that goes way back to when I was a Chaps fan as a kid. Who had worse records than McHone, Travis?

There was a player who actually played with a toothpick in his mouth while he played...during games...for the Dallas Chaparrals! He thought he was cool and I remember little kids going out an painting their basketballs red, white and blue and dribbling around in their driveways with toothpicks in their mouths. :lol

Anyone know who that player was? He was actually a pretty good player, though not famous. Feel free to use a search engine for that one if you care to.

Morris McHone 1983 11-20 .355
Babe McCarthy 1972-73 24-48 .333
Dave Brown 1972-73 4-8 .333

Not really a trivia question but whats your all time favorite quote from a Spurs player?

Mine?

David Robinson after Clifford Robinson went 1-5 FG in a Det-SA
game: "I hate to do it, but I have to give Steve Smith some credit for
his defense. Steve did a nice job of yelling for help every time Cliff
got the ball."

In 1998 when DRob got knocked out by Karl Malone with the elbow and was called for the foul, David had a good quote:

"Yes, I fouled his elbow with the back of my head, I'm guilty"

Does anyone know the answers to these?
'Anyone want to know the answers to these? I think Chopper knows. :hat

I know that my man EJ wore #42. He played for either Boston or Detroit the year before he was acquired.

The best player the Spurs ever had. . .next to Charles Spider Smith! :)

Hey, allright!!! Way to go, Chopper! Correct answers are: #42 and Ed played with the Detroit Pistons prior to coming to the Spurs. Edgar later played with the Cleveland Cavaliers, following his 2-year stint with the Silver and Black.

Edgar also participated in the slam dunk contest at one of the All-Star games while he was a Spur but he didn't make it very far. Helicopter did have some serious hops, however, and that Dan Issel smile (no front teeth on top).

David's "What is it? A coloring book?" about Shaq Talks Back in 2001 will always be a great one to me.

It's not from a Spurs player, but I remember Pop once justifying an ejection by saying that he thought a player (I think it was Duncan) who had been ejected earlier, was probably getting lonely. Classic Pop.

"I will not be mishandled" - AJ (following Steve Nash's hard foul in a Spurs v. Suns game).

My favorite. . .which I've posted before, was from Mike Mitchell. One night after lighting a team up for 38 points he was selected player of the game and was being interviewed on WOAI. The broadcaster said "Mike, you were pretty hot tonight", to which M&M responded "Yeah, I was so hot I could have shot the ball out my ass and it still would have gone in!"

Another favorite was from the Iceman after he played in one of the Legends games at the all-star game. He was THE offense for his squad scoring somewhere around 30 without much effort. I think it was Jim Gray who interviewed him and said to Ice, "It looks like you could still score on anybody." Ice responded "Jim, I may not know a lot about the X's, but I sure do know a lot about the O's!"

Yeah, I remember the Gervin quote. As I remember it, that Legend's game was the one where a semi-old-timer got injured pretty badly and they quit scheduling Legends games during the All-Star Weekends.

Nice job of changing the question to fit your answer (the original question was: How many players are still active in the NBA from the 94-95 Western Conference Finals(both teams)?).

You asked a question that several people answered correctly, and then you blasted them for missing a question that you never asked.

Are we supposed to be doing the Carnac thing with you?

What does this mean?
Man, I'm glad to see I'm still remembered here!

Ahem, I'll take a wild guess:

McHale, Walton, and Bobby Jones.

(Actually the only one I got in chat was McHale. I also guess Frank Ramsay, Havlicek, and Billy Cunningham. They all would have won it, but they didn't have the award when they played.)

Since nobody answered this one, I'll answer it now...it's only been 7 years.

Answer: Maurice "Mo" McHartley played with a toothpick in his mouth.
