Just saw it on the TV guide...don't think this has been posted already. Not sure if it's Game 5, but it has to be, they're running a clincher game marathon. 98 Bulls vs Jazz is on now if anyone wants to see that. Don't know if the marathon will get to '03 by the time the game starts tonight but it would be cool to see that clincher game too.

"For those of you that aren't aware, ESPN Classic is having an NBA Finals marathon, and later today, they will be showing two Spurs games:

12:00pm EST - Spurs vs Knicks, Game 5
6:00pm EST - Spurs vs Pistons, Game 5

Should be fun."

The Spurs/Knick 1999 Finals game is on!

Holy shit, Duncan "was" quicker than I thought. Elliott's got hops...

Johnson is a beast with the kickout passes.

Knicks are only a shooting team with no offense setups....no wonder we beat them

The search feature DOES work again, ya know.

Anyways, always nice to see DRob in action.

WTF

They were showing like every game of the finals series last night at about 3 or 4...
They showed game 1 of 1995 when FatShax was dream shaked out of his pinstriped blue jersey by Dream....now they're only showing clinching games?

1999 Tim Duncan was just waaay too good.

LOL Malik Rose's jersey should be retired based on pure number of fouls committed.

Tim looks like a 6-11 TMac out there. My God he was incredible.

wow, Timmeah was making all kinds of shots he doesn't even attempt anymore. he WAS like a 6-11 TMac out there

I wonder if he could still do that, but doesn't because it uses too much energy? His spin move in the Utah series looked absolutely as quick as ever.

I don't think he ever had this type of quickness after the injury in 2000. He looks like a quick SF out there.

Watching 99 Spurs shows just how much better the '07 version is.

Actually, I agree.

I've been stating for months how the 99 team was the best.

Now I might have to change that. We have no flow on offense and our defense these days is leaps and bounds better.

Yeah, the 99' squad didn't have the aggressive defense. They were playing the hurry up offense.

It's pretty incredible to watch, isn't it?

I'd forgotten just how good Sprewell was in that game and series.

I miss DRob.

Sean Elliot just looks so . . . tired. He's jumping and running and everything, but looks worn out. This last 5-6 minutes took a long time to watch in real time. . .

I still remember that feeling; it was incredible.

Oh, look JVG had hair! And SFIE is right - for as terrible as he looked in '99, he doesn't look 7 years older. By the time he's 60, he'll look young.

ANd we are SO watching 2005's Game 5 tonight before game 2. Call it a warm up. :lol

Think how it would be to have 99 DRob on 2007's team.
Wow.

Holy crap, Elie's three was the most disgusting thing I've seen since the Bierdins free throw parade against Dallas.

And he made it. :oops

It's strange how looking back gives you such a different perspective no how the game was won back then compared to now. I think our team now is leagues better than it was in 99, and yet we got there in fewer games than we've ever gotten to the Finals the last 3 times.

I think TD had more jumpers, spins, and outside shots because he wasn't playing the role he established after that year. It might have been injury but I doubt it, the way he shoots now is more definitive. He doesn't shoot the 18 ft., and 3 ptr's because it's not his role.

And as I watch the final 1:00 of this 99 game, I wonder HOW THE HELL DID WE WIN? It's brutal to watch.

Ratings were quite good, b/c NY was one of the teams involved and the national media hadn't jumped on the "SA is boring" bandwagon yet.

The Knicks made so many horrible mistakes that game.

We did too, but the errors weren't quite as egregious. And Duncan TOOK OVER in the 4th.

I think the team we have now would give the Lakers of 00-02 problems...

That 1999 team couldn't.

and...

AHAHAHA Avery.. "THAT'S WHAT I'M TALKIN BOUT 5-0!"

How many games would the series have gone with Ewing? Definitely 6.

Maybe 7, but I think we still win. Duncan was unstoppable.

Did I really read people criticizing the '99 Spurs defense? That is statistically the best defensive team ever and the best defensive Spurs team I ever saw.

Tim and Dave in their primes patrolling the paint was just sick.

Nikos
06-10-2007, 03:00 PM
Actually statistically the 2004 defense was the best. 99 I think was the next best, along with 2005.

But I do think come playoff time the 99 defense was the best overall because they had Drob to guard Shaq and they had two excellent shotblockers and post defenders. In an an 82 game season they might not have been the best defense -- but against elite playoff teams with good big men the 1999 has the edge in overall defense because of the twin towers.

LaMarcus Bryant
06-10-2007, 03:06 PM
Duncan was able to shoot those jumpers at will because he had another legitimate rebounder right under the paint in case he missed.

Who has that role now? Oberto? Horry?

Get us another got damn rebounder PLZ

I was talking defensive field goal percentage -- not points per possession..

The '99 Spurs were the only Spurs team I ever saw that could dial their defense up a couple notches when it had to and could almost get stops on demand. With Tim and Dave in the middle and three solid perimeter defenders (Elie, Elliott and Jackson), it was just a monster of a defensive team.

Game 5 was one of their worst defensive efforts of the season and it was still pretty decent.
