Who would you root for?
I thought of this after watching this Cleveland season ticket holder all decked out in Spurs gear, saying he supported both, but like the Spurs more.
So, if you didn't love the Spurs, which teams jersey would you don and watch?
(I'll be honest, I'd go for the Cavs. They are the ultimate underdog.)

ditto on hating of the Spurs if i didn't love them. I can see why a lot of people hate them. they're disciplined, militant, winning machines these days, if i didn't love the Spurs I'd probably like the Rockets or the Nuggets.

minus their whining and crying, they're fun to watch.
If I weren't in SA I wouldn't pay the NBA the least bit of attention. I basically left the fandom world of two major sports in the 90's. MLB and the NBA. I picked up the NBA again when I moved to SA because it's the only game in town. MLB is an absolute SHAM of a league and though I like the Spurs the NBA is a fairly screwed up league as well and to me, the outcomes of games are too often 'suspect' and too large a portion of the players are....trash. This is why I like the Spurs. Because they are the antithesis of what the NBA has become. When days upon days are spent on Koby crying to the media when the playoffs are going on and LA is OUT of the playoffs. Houston, we have a problem. Further, I don't think a lot of these guys are the best players you could find. Flashy street ballers, yes. Great players. No. We've seen what a good smart TEAM can do against these players.
NBA is a crap product, overall. They don't need LESS teams like the Spurs. They need MORE teams like the Spurs.
Sorry, just my opinion.
Plus there's too many teams for the talent available and it's watered down the product.

Depends on the year and the team. In the past I've rooted for the Suns, as entertaining and because I loved Steve Nash and thought he was a pretty classy guy. I've rooted for the Mavs (Dirk isn't that bad) and the hometown team Houston (but they pretty much suck since I've been here). After this year, I have a lot more respect for Denver (but not their coach) and for Utah. Young team would be the Hornets. . . out in the east would be the Cavs maybe, and used to be Detriot.

If my blood didn't run silver and black during basketball games, I would probably root for the Pistons, who came through big for me in 2004. Even if i wasn't as Spurs fan I would still be an anyone but the Lakers fan. 2nd choice would be the Bulls, my mother is from Chicago and we always rooted for MJ in the finals when I was a kid.
It's hard for me to answer though, as I don't think I'm capable of choosing aa western conference team. I try to place myself in the mentality of a Suns fan, and a part of my brain that realizes that would require rooting against the Spurs in round 1-3 of the postseason pulls the emergency handle and I reflexively scream "Go Spurs Go" at my computer screen.

I'd have to say I would probably be a Bulls fan. SA has no football, and my family is originally from Chicago, so that would have been the team. I root for the Bears for the same reason.

Interesting. I was just an NBA fan before I rooted for the Spurs. I watched the playoffs every year and just rooted for whoever as the games went along. Like I said before, I'd have definitely been a Tim Duncan fan no matter what.

I was a Blazers fan until about 1992. I became a Spurs fan during the 1989-1990 season, David's rookie year. a friend of mine told me about this 7 foot dude that was playing for the Spurs and that he came from the Naval Academy. My old man is a retired Navy man so I was interested. Over the next few years, my interest in the Spurs grew and my interest in the Blazers diminished.
Over the years I've become very annoyed with most of the rest of the league. All the "me first" attitudes, huge salaries, hype, and all the other shit.
Most people (including myself) always say they want classy players, team players, all that shit. Most people are fucking hypocrites. I love the way the Spurs (as a franchise and team) work and conduct themselves. It's so different from most of the rest of the league.
Also, I just love the fact that such an unpopular (not hated, just not popular) team is one of the best in the league every fucking year for the last decade. It makes me laugh that the Spurs contend for the title every year while the Lakers falter and the Knicks suck a dick! :lol

Yeah, that's why I said the Spurs were like Bjorn Borg. I remember what a fucking embarssment John McEnroe was, and I was ashamed that he was an American going to foreign countries and acting the way he did. My dad told me that Borg threw a tantrum during a match when he was a kid and his father took his tennis racket away and told him that if he couldn't conduct himself like a champion that he wouldn't be allowed to play. I don't know if that's true, but it always stuck with me. My dad taught me how to put an elbow into a guy's ribs to get an advantage going for rebounds but also taught me to shake my opponent's hand after a game.

i'm a pistons fan all the way. but seeing as the spurs are my favorite team in the west, i'd cheer for them all the way (like i am right now, since they're in the championships).
but i'd also cheer on the rockets and golden state warriors (they're my favorite underdog team... they managed to knock out a number 1 seed. even though they didn't get past utah, it's all good. i'd take golden state over cleveland any day)
Reggie Miller

The Pacers and Spurs have always been my favorite teams. If both San Antone and Indy had the organizational problems that the Pacers are going through now, I would probably quit watching the NBA entirely.
If I hadn't grown up with the Pacers and Spurs, I would have been a Spurs fan anyway, because David Robinson was such a fine human being and player. Fortunately for the Spurs, Timmy seems to be cut from the same cloth. The Spurs have been very lucky to have Gervin -> Robinson -> Duncan in succession: great players and men. The Pacers used to be able to say that, until Reggie retired. This view is so prevalent in Indiana now that the Pacers HAD to blow up the team.
Side Note: I can never hate any team as much as Pacers fans used to hate the ABA Kentucky Colonels and Dr. J's Nets. That was some white-hot intensity.
