View Full Version : Value of Larry O'Brien Trophy diminishing?
SpursDynasty
06-15-2007, 02:28 PM
What is up with "the Spurs played bad in the Finals so it's hard to call them a dynasty" or "the Spurs in the Finals is not good for the league"? "Tim Duncan is no Karl Malone" or "Poppovich is no Red Aueberbach or Pat Riley". NO SHIT those guys can't be compared to Jordan, Bird, Magic, Riley, etc. The Spurs Dynasty has taken on a life of its own. Just like Jordan said there can't be another Jordan, but there can be a Wade or LeBron, don't take away from the Spurs just because they don't have the same entertainment value, ratings, etc. as previous dynasties. We have heard that after they won the 2003, 2005, and now 2007 championship. RATINGS and ENTERTAINMENT do not determine an NBA Championship.
And there's always an excuse. "Well without the Phoenix suspensions they wouldn't be in the Finals". Or how about "Well Dallas didn't have Dirk and Lakers didn't have Rick Fox in 2003". Do us a favor and SHADDUP. The same trend has continued since the last Lakers championship run in 2002 ended: No respect for the NBA champions just because they're not the team that was "supposed to be there". Dallas was there last year, right? They lost, so people make excuses about the "upset" and rant about referees/NBA wanting to make Wade into the new Jordan, so they give him all the calls.
So let's rewrite NBA history here so the O'Brien trophy gets its value back:
THE 2003 NBA CHAMPIONS, THE LA LAKERS!
THE 2004 NBA CHAMPIONS, THE LA LAKERS WITH THEIR HALL OF FAME FAB 4 OF SHAQ, KOBE, MALONE, AND PAYTON!
THE 2005 NBA BACK-TO-BACK CHAMPIONS, THE DETROIT PISTONS!
THE 2006 NBA CHAMPIONS, THE YOUNG, ATHLETIC, ENTERTAINING DALLAS MAVERICKS, TO WHOM THE SPURS HAVE PASSED THE TORCH!
THE 2007 NBA CHAMPIONS, THE DALLAS MAVERICKS, WINNERS OF 67 GAMES IN THE REGULAR SEASON!
Where has the value/respect for the NBA champions gone?!?! Thank the stupid entertainment-minded glitz-and-glamour-minded NBA media for wanting certain teams year after year to make it, and then they don't make it, so instead of focusing on who did/was supposed to/has real talent to make it, we call it "boring" and "bad for the league". STFU.
Congrats Spurs on the dynasty.
I had heard on FSR last night that supposedly Robert Horry said that this Spurs team could beat Magic's Lakers and Bird's Celtics teams easily. Now if he said that, then the man has lost all sense of reality.

You used to be a Spurs fan in the 90s that switched teams because you thought they were never going to win anything?

You're close...i was a fan during their "heyday" in the 70's and 80's. But everyone here knows the story so I'm not going to re-hash it today cause this is for the Spurs fans.
As for what Horry "supposedely" said, I think he's nuts. They wouldn't stand a chance.

If I were a Pacer fan, I'd be stoked about the short-term future. They were so good last year, that in April, an Indianapolis sportscaster began his segment on the Pacers by saying "And now, on to the Pacers, though I'm not exactly sure why anyone cares." I guess they did have a highlight when they rallied to beat the Spurs on April 1, but it was hard to tell from the indifference expressed by Pacers fans that night. It was as electric as a Spurs pre-season game.
I honestly forget the Einsteinian reasoning that led to Pooh's choice, but whatever its logic, that choice has clearly proven to have been an excellent one.

Serves the bastard right for bailing on his team. I lived through the 70s and 80s. Never once did that lead me astray. In addition, all the more better it is that someone should stop being a Spurs fan in favor of a Pacers team which seemed closer to a championship at the time, only to miss out on 4 Spurs championships.
Fuck you.

It's really too bad that the Commissioner didn't make the first exception in the history of that rule for two idiots who couldn't maintain their poise.
You know, though, I'm going to start bitching about how the Spurs were robbed. After all, if Joey Crawford doesn't toss Tim on April 15 at Dallas, the Spurs might have won that game. Had they won that game, they likely would have secured HCA for a second round matchup with the Suns -- after all, when the Spurs lost on 4/15, Pop just mailed in the remaining games; meanwhile, the Suns were busting their humps to win and lost consecutive games in that last week of the season. Three Spurs wins and two Suns losses = HCA for the Spurs. So, really, it was the Spurs who were screwed -- not by the Commissioner, but by Joey Crawford!!
For the Spurs to have overcome that adversity to win this championship is truly remarkable. I mean, they had to win 2 road games in Phoenix when they should have had HCA in that series!! What other team had to deal with that sort of nonsense? No team in these playoffs, then, persevered more than the Spurs.
