Source: Bryant tells Buss that he wants out
In a meeting in Spain, the Lakers star voices concerns to owner about team's direction.
By Mike Bresnahan, Times Staff Writer
June 16, 2007
Jerry Buss met with his unhappy $88.6-million employee, Kobe Bryant, for a get-together Friday between owner and superstar in the somewhat surprising setting of Spain.
They had spoken by phone two weeks ago, a few days after Bryant asked to be traded, but this was a longer, more emotional conversation.
Buss wanted to appeal to the nine-time All-Star, reminding him that trades take time to develop and that winning remains the focus of the organization, but Bryant voiced concerns about the direction of the franchise and reiterated his demand to be traded, said a source with knowledge of the situation.
"That's the message that came out of it," the source said.
Team sources vehemently insisted there were no plans to trade Bryant, and they were still hopeful that a peaceful solution could be reached. Bryant and Buss are expected to resume their dialogue in the near future.
Bryant's displeasure has grown steadily since the Lakers were eliminated by Phoenix last month in the first round of the playoffs. The Lakers are 121-125 since reaching the NBA Finals in 2004, not including their first-round exits the last two seasons.
Last month, Bryant publicly requested that Jerry West return to the team's front office — an unlikely scenario — and urged General Manager Mitch Kupchak to make trades that would steer the team in a winning direction.
"I'm still frustrated," Bryant said at the time. "I'm waiting for them to make some changes."
The Lakers have contacted numerous teams, but there have not been any blockbuster deals yet — by them or by any other team in the league.
Talks with the Indiana Pacers for six-time All-Star forward-center Jermaine O'Neal have stalled because the Lakers do not want to give up both Lamar Odom and Andrew Bynum to get O'Neal.
Trade talks around the league are expected to heat up as the June 28 draft approaches and could continue into the free-agent period that begins July 1.
Bryant was vacationing in Spain and stopped by to see a practice session of his favorite soccer team, FC Barcelona, on Thursday. Buss had been in China since leaving the U.S. more than two weeks ago. He planned to travel to London before returning to Los Angeles, although it was unclear whether he went to Spain specifically to talk to Bryant.
"What they talked about and what went on between Kobe and Dr. Buss is private and will remain between the two of them," Lakers spokesman John Black said.
Bryant's agent, Rob Pelinka, did not return calls seeking comment.
Bryant, who will be 29 in August, has four years left on his contract, but he can void it in two years.
The two-time scoring champion, widely acknowledged as the game's most dynamic player, has the NBA's top-selling jersey and is a significant draw at Staples Center. The Lakers are very cognizant of his importance in driving ticket sales, as well as his effect on corporate sponsors.
Buss, who signed off on Bryant's seven-year, $136.4-million contract in July 2004, released a statement two weeks ago in which he said, "We will continue to pursue every avenue possible to improve our team with him as the cornerstone."

Seems to me that he's haunted and childishly jealous of the Spur's success. Wasn't it right after the Spurs beat the Suns and were heading to the finals that he first made his demands?
Now the Spurs have won the title, and it's another pathetic, almost creepy attempt to steal the spotlight.

The Lakers don't have to trade him. He has threatened to sit out the season yet. And even if he did, I'm not sure that the Lakers wouldn't rather watch him sit than take whatever crappy offer the Knicks can muster.

I don't believe he'll sit out the season...still Kobe to the bulls for Deng, Wallace, Gordon and the 9th pick is pretty good. I still love Kobe, but you aren't going to get a better deal than that...still I'm sure Mitch will trade Kobe for some ankle tape and David Lee from the Knicks. I don't know what to think about all of this...my loyalty is with the Lakers, but Kobe's being a jerk, but then again the HO is full of ignorance as well....time will tell. Kobe posts on his Web site about rift growing between himself, Lakers
Associated Press
Updated: June 17, 2007, 4:57 PM ET
LOS ANGELES -- Kobe Bryant posted a message on his Web page Sunday strongly suggesting the superstar wanted to be traded from the Lakers.
"When you love something as much as I love the Lakers its [sic] hard to even imagine thinking about being elsewhere," he wrote on his Web site, kb24.com. "But, the ONE THING I will never sacrifice when it comes to basketball is WINNING."
The two-time scoring champion also wrote: "The more I thought about the future, the more I became convinced that the Lakers and me just have two different visions for the future."
The 28-year-old nine-time All Star has four years left on his contract, but can terminate it following the 2008-09 season.
Bryant last month voiced frustration at Lakers management and publicly requested he be traded after the team was eliminated by Phoenix in the first round of the playoffs.
Though he said nothing could change his mind, Bryant later backed off after speaking with coach Phil Jackson.
"I don't want to go anywhere -- this is my team," Bryant told KLAC radio at the time. "I love it here. I called Phil, man. He and I talked; it was an emotional conversation. But he just said, 'You know what, Kobe? Let us try to figure this thing out."'
The more I thought about the future, the more I became convinced that the Lakers and me just have two different visions for the future.
But Sunday's post was a not-so-subtle hint that tension remained between Bryant and the franchise. - Ya think? Bryant wrote that the Lakers, owned by Jerry Buss, had not backed him with players the team needs to win championships.
"The Lakers are pursuing a longer-term plan that is different from what Dr. Buss shared with me at the time I re-signed as a free agent," he wrote. "I have seen that plan unfold for the last three years and watched great trade opportunities come and go, and have seen free agents passed on. That has led to the Lakers not winning a playoff series."
Buss' spokesman Bob Steiner and Lakers spokesman John Black both declined comment Sunday.
Buss, who signed off on Bryant's seven-year $136.4 million contract in 2004, two weeks ago issued a statement stating, "We will continue to pursue every avenue possible to improve our team with him as the cornerstone."
Bryant earned $17.72 million last season and will earn $88.6 million over the next four years. He is considered one of the NBA's most dominant players and a top draw at the Staples Center.

All credit goes to drzucchini (Star Player) for digging up these quotes. drzucchini posted them in a reply on another thread (http://forums.lakersground.net/viewtopic.php?t=43476), but given the uproar by haters over Kobe's public comments, it's a worthwhile reminder that leaders sometimes have to go public with their criticisms and concerns to affect change and inspire excellence.
If you have a problem with Kobe calling out the organization and the quality of his teammates, you must have had a serious problem with Michael Jordan:
"We're beating a lot of poor teams. So what? We won a lot of games last year, too. Will Horace and Bill still be playing at this level in the playoffs...Can Pip keep it up?"
"I hate being out there with those garbagemen. They don't get you the ball."
"They've got no idea what it's all about. The white guys, they work hard, but they don't have the talent. And the rest of them? Who knows what to expect? They're not good for much of anything."
"I know what's gonna happen. We'll wait until the last minute and then they'll say something like they couldn't get a deal done because of the cap or somebody pulled out at the last minute. It happens here all the time. I don't know why I'm surprised every year."
"He can't do anything with the ball. Don't give it to him." - Michael yelling at Paxson who passed the ball to Perdue
"You ever hear of a guy, six-eleven maybe and two hundred sixty pounds, a guy big and fat like that and he can't get but two rebounds, if that many, running all over the damn court and he gets two rebounds? Big guy like that and he gets one rebound. Can't even stick his ass into people and get more than that...Big, fat, fat guy. One rebound in three games. Power forward. Maybe they should call it powerless forward." - Michael ripping Stacey King a new one
"He was scared in there and panicking. He just lost it when Stockton scored." - Michael on B.J. Armstrong's mental fragility
I'll let them stand up and take responsibility for themselves."
"We have to do some things. We need to make some changes."
"...I call them 'the Looney Tunes.' Physically, they were the best. Mentally, they weren't even close."
"He's scared. He's got no heart...Nobody told me that. If I had spoken up, he wouldn't have been here."
"I know I can recognize what to do, but I'm not sure they can."
"It's a hell of a lot easier to make Earl Monroe look good than it is Brad Sellers."
"I hope there's a jumpshot in there." - Michael to Stacey King who was walking into the locker room with a box
"They don't need a ticket to watch you sitting on the bench. They can go to your house for that." - Michael to Charles Davis who was sorting through his tickets for his family and friends
"Give me the ******* ball." - Michael to Doug Collins who drew up a play for Dave Corzine
"I hate when I have to read that in the papers the next day, that I couldn't do something. It wasn't my fault."
"You're an idiot. You've screwed up every play we ever ran. You're too stupid to even remember the plays. We ought to get rid of you." - Michael to Horace Grant
"If you [pass the ball to Bill Cartwright], you'll never get the ball from me."
"We're not winning because of talent. We're just beating bad teams."
"Headache tonight, Scottie?" - Michael asks Scottie, while showing him his 2-for-16 line
"It's probably a twelve-day. He needs two days to wake up." - Michael on a ten-day contract teammate
"Five more years and I'm out of here. I'm marking these days on a calendar, like I'm in jail. I'm tired of being used by this organization, by the league, by the writers, by everyone."
"They're not interested in winning. They just want to sell tickets, which they can do because of me. They won't make any deals to make us better. And this Kukoc thing. I hate that. They're spending all their time chasing this guy."
"If I were a general manager, we'd be a better team."
"Will Vanderbilt. He doesn't deserve to be named after a Big Ten school." - Michael on Will Perdue
"I want to prove the critics wrong...I want to see some serious moves from management, which I really haven't seen that much of yet, and I want to see more serious attitudes from my teammates this year when it comes to the playoffs. In the past, it's been more or less a joking thing, sort of a 'Well, we're here, so let's have a good time.'"
"I'm sure everything will be fine if we win, but if we start losing, I'm shooting."
"I know what I would do if I were coach. I'd determine our strengths and weaknesses and utilize them. And it's pretty clear what our strength is."
"Your boy doesn't want to play. I'm tired of bailing his ass out." - Michael yelling at Jim Cleamons about Dennis Hopson
"I don't know about trading a 24 year-old guy for a 34 year-old guy." - Michael questioning the Oakley trade
"He's causing me too many turnovers." - Michael on Cartwright's inability to catch
"Why the hell don't you ever set a pick like that in a game?" - Michael yelling at Perdue after also hitting Perdue upside his head (led to the institution of the private curtain for practices)
Again, credit goes to the mighty drzucchini for dredging this quotes. I just wanted to make sure they got the prominence they deserve, as opposed to being overlooked as a reply on another thread.

Did he guard B-Diddy? Is it his fault Davis had the series of his life? Why do people keep piling on Dirk? He played crappy, we lost. Avery coached a crappy series. Terry couldn't make a shot to save his life or keep Davis in front of him. When he wasn't in foul trouble, Devin couldn't keep Davis in front of him. We lost that series as a team. Dirk came up short, but I'm not gonna make sweeping judgments about a guy that is 5-0 in series-deciding games, has led a team to the Finals and is one of the top 5 players in the League. Well I guess if our aspirations are to become one of the greatest teams to never win a title, the Malone comparison is flattering. The Jazz had plenty of non-Jordan years where they had great opportunities at winning a title and they choked them away.
I just want this team to win one. I'd love to believe that Dirk is capable of leading a team to a title, but right now he's only shown flashes of that leadership, not a consistency with it.

More than any other player or coach on the roster, we have a rich owner committed to winning and as passionate as any diehard Reunion Rowdie. Most owners are content to just turn a profit. I don't have any doubt Cuban is going to hoist the trophy one day. Whether it's with Dirk as the centerpiece, I don't know, but this team is a lot closer to a title than it was in 2000.

After this, there's room for debate as to whether Lebron or Kobe or Nash, etc, makes the list. Dirk is maybe a top 50.

The only guys in the league I would take over Dirk would be Tim, Bron, Wade, Kobe, and maybe Nash, although I would probably put Dirk ahead of him due to the age factor. Close right behind him Yao

If I'm a GM, I take Bron. If I'm a coach, I take Dirk.

Questionable shot selection, overdribbling on the perimeter, iffy free throw shooter, coasts too much. Getting to the Finals out of THAT Eastern Conference is not that impressive to me.

The ft shooting for sure, but I think those other things can be attributed to shitty teamates that stand around and dont move, and them not having a primary ball handler that can set people up. He is much more of a leader than Dirk, is 6 years younger, and might be even more of a matchup problem than Dirk. I think most coaches would take Bron over Dirk in a heartbeat, hell, the Mavs would do that trade in a heartbeat

Dirk for LeBron? no brainer. we'd be a lock for the next 3 titles at least.

22. Stephen Jackson
23. Polish Sausage
24. Chimichanga
25. Shiner
26. More Food
27. Nick Van Exel - all 250 pounds of him in the glorious silver and black (is it a shock that he got fat in San Antonio?)
28. Cadillac Anderson
29. Alvin Robertson
30. George Gervin after taking his Geritol

Those guys are all fluke players on a fluke dynasty. They just won the championships they were supposed to win. They didn't do anything special. Here's the guys that could all take Duncan to school:
1) Dirk
2) J-Ho
3) Terry
4) Stack
5) Harris
6) Damp
7) Diop
8) Buckner
9) George
10) Croshere
11) Barea
12) Ager
13) Willis
14) Mensa-Bonsu
15) Shawn Bradley could always be brought out of retirement
16) Same for Eschmeyer
17) Brad Davis, not only a smooth baritone on the Mavs' radio broadcast, but he is easily > Parker or Manu
18) Roy Tarpley's rolled up dollar bills
19) What's Sam Perkins doing these days?
20) Roy Tarpley's sponsor
21) Dirk if you shrunk him to 5 inches tall
22) Let's go break Dick Motta out of the nursing home
23) Bob Ortegel - Not only he is a devil with the ladies, with a rare, sensual sexual energy that can't be contained, but he could easily beat up Bill Schoening and Dave Barnett at the same time with both hands tied behind his back in a fight:

24) Walter Bond
25) Terry Davis
26) James Donaldson, aka GOAT...I laugh at the comical thought of Duncan trying to post him up, or futilely giving way while Donaldson rains dunk after dunk over Timmy.
27) Herb Williams
28) Laura Miller
29) Humble Billy Hayes
30) The Manager of the Banana Republic in West Village.

Elton Brand and Kobe on the same team? I don't want to see that. Kobe should have signed there when he had the chance -- it instantly would've given the Clippers a shot at being on equal footing with the Lake Show in southern California.

Finley and Nash weren't leaders? Dirk's not a leader?
So Dallas is the only team in NBA History to ever give up a lead?

I think he's banned from the Old No. 7 club because the other guys have absolutely no chance when he walks through the doors to work his magic. I heard he's gonna hunt Chuck Norris down and kill the motherfucker for stealing his facts. And look at that fancy pimpjacket he's wearing. Off the rack from the Men's Warehouse = "Class"
