For some odd reason I'm hearing nothing about this guy on message boards, DX to realgm. Nobody's talking about him.

Yeah, he's a quiet, quiet name right now. Is he working out still?

His stock seems to be slipping toward 28. Would be a pretty nice selection in that range.

That's because his middle name looks like an abbreviated version of Jaques Vaughn. Buzz kill.

If he slips to the 28 then I would LOVE to scoop him up. He is a very complete player and has great size for a SG. Draftexpress had him going in the late teens last week and he has slid to the 27 spot as of now. If that is accurate then him sliding one more spot isn't out of the question.

Byars is my hope for the Pistons at 27. I think he could be a steal this late in the first round.

Definitely. If he crosses your path that late its hard to pass him up. It's like when Reggie Bush fell to the Saints. They really didn't need him, but it's just too good to pass up.

The last foray with a player from Virginia didn't work out too well.

Although I've heard this kid ain't bad.

I still think he ends up going to someone in the teens, but if he did fall to San Antonio I would take him and not care what happens after. He is that good. Watching him was like watching Stephan Jackson without all the problems between the ears.

This is the guy, I have been hoping all season this would be the guy the Spurs get, and I am still hoping. He would be a great 4 in our small ball sets, is a great teamate and leader, mature (23 years old), and does pretty much everything well. He could be a Josh Howard type of player if he works, and form everything Ive read and seen, all the guy does is work

Plus he has to have something between the ears since he attended Vandy. Looks good in the highlight reel.. Looks like a another Spurs pick also since has been quiet..

I'm trying not to get my hopes up but this guy would be a great pick at 28. My gut tells me he goes in the mid twenties, probably just out of reach for the Spurs, but stranger things have happened.

The guy looks 28 already. At least.

Yeah, but coaching had a lot to do with that...his transfer still haunts Virginia fans.

He's a great kid, though.

I think Byars would be a good fit in SA, but he seems to also be the kind of guy that Utah and Detroit would like as well. IMO, Utah will likely snag him with the 25th pick and if they opt for a guy like Almond, I'm not sure that he gets past Detroit at #27.

Again, I question whether the Spurs would give guaranteed money to a domestic player that is unlikely to contribute next season...especially when the Spurs FO is undecided on a guy like White. But him being there at #28 would certainly make them think twice...

We weren't the only team ever to fail to convert a small SG to a PG.

A great fit for the Spurs if still around at 28. Since he went to high school in Tennessee and stayed there to play college ball he may be underpublicized - just the way the Spurs like 'em. :)

I was watching the player profiles on NBA on Demand here are some of the highlights they mentioned.

He is able to hit the NBA 3 and take his guy off the dribble
He is a definite leader
He is a guy who takes pride in defense and often was asked to guard the other teams best offensive guy.
He is a hard worker that takes a lot of pride in improving his game.

He is 6'7 225 and one of those guys that can become another Josh Howard type player.

IMO this is the guy that is worth moving up to take.

As of right now DX as him going one spot before us to the Pistons, while they have Almond going to the Bobcats at 22 :wtf

The more I hear, the more I like Byars.

Honestly at 28 the Spurs could do no wrong with Byars OR Dudley.

Byars though sounds more athletic, and a tad longer.

Tough choice.

Hopefully either Dudley or Byars are available and the Spurs take him.

Byars destroyed Florida in the conference season and had a hell of a tournament. It took a questionable pivot by Jeff Green for Georgetown to get past Byars' Vanderbilt team.

Byars and Dowdell would be a very good draft for the Spurs.

Morris Almond vs. Derrick Byars =

Byars, 3 pts, 5 fouls
Almond, 44 pts, 12 rebs, 17-19 fts

I wanted him at 28, then 33, then the Spurs take my least favorite player in the draft, then Byars keeps slipping. Portland is going to be fantastic.

Anyone know why Byars slipped so far down the draft? This was a real tumble down the hill. That many teams can't be wrong can they?

Didn't they trade him to Philadelphia? Byars will be a Sixer.

A lot of teams slept on a lot of good players in the past. Byars might be one that teams might regret not picking up. We'll see. Maybe he isn't going to to be all that. Who knows?
