After a slow start to the season without Manu Ginobili and Tony Parker, the San Antonio Spurs are on a roll. On back-to-back nights, after a double-overtime thriller over in-state rivals Dallas, the Spurs held off a young Atlanta Hawks squad, 95-89, in San Antonio. Parker struggled with just 6 points on 3-of-13 shooting, but Manu Ginobili provided some magic off the bench, scoring 27 points (8-12 FG, 5-7 3-pt, 6-6 FT), including a spinning layup that sealed the deal with 32 seconds left in the game.

The Spurs are now on a four-game winning streak, and their record stands at 13-8, good for third in the Southwest Division, and just a half-game behind the the leaders New Orleans.

The Spurs are looking good, but for them to achieve their true goal - which is winning a title - they are going to have to get some athleticism up front. Tim Duncan is still doing his thing at the power forward and center positions, and the 28-year old Matt Bonner has been producing, so the priority comes at small forward.

Bruce Bowen is now a situational player (sort of like Robert Horry during the 2006-07 season) and Michael Finley has been forced to start at the 3. Finley has been a career swingman and still has just a little athleticism left to contribute, but at 35, he can't do it alone - he needs a good backup.

After doing some research on small forwards in and outside the NBA, I have come to the conclusion that former UNC and Euroleague standout Reyshawn Terry, who now plays for Gruppo Triboldi Basket of the Italian second division (http://www.mavsmoneyball.com/2008/12/3/679192/reyshawn-terry-surfaces), would be a good fit.

Of course, players like Gerald Wallace (whose name has been floating in and out of trade rumors lately) and Jamario Moon are better talents, but the Spurs just don't have the pieces to offer in a trade. Even first-round draft picks don't work, because the Spurs would be drafting late in the round.

Basically, the Spurs need to find a diamond in the rough, and the 6-8, 222 lb Reyshawn Terry fits the bill (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J1AbQEk3mnc). Terry is jacked, long, and athletic. Moreover, he can handle and shoot the ball. He has the tools to be a solid defender for the Spurs - and comes at an affordable price. If that weren't enough, Terry is probably hungry to play in the NBA.

Terry is no star, but the young and athletic small forward would be an excellent piece for the ambitious Spurs, who would be much better off playing him than Ime Udoka, the undersized (6-5) wing with short arms and not much finesse, and supposed to be successor to Bowen.

I couldn't agree more and I'm so glad someone else pointed this out. The Spurs absolutely need a "small" jolt of athleticism on the front line. I saw Terry play a bit for Dallas during summer league. While he's far from being a finished product or even a polished player, he does have some skills that could be of use to the Spurs in a spot or situational role. Skills that are in short supply on this roster.

Even if they don't decide specifically on him, a player of similar size and skill would be a welcomed addition. It's very obvious the Spurs are extremely lean in ths area and another big, athletic, body would be just the ticket. I trust Pop and R.C. will address this area, going forward.

You're probably right. However that's next year. I do worry a bit about this year - especially since the season debut of Ian is still very much a mystery.

Between the 2 & the 3, the Spurs have Manu, Finley, Bowen, Mason, and Udoka (who can't get on the floor right now). Throw in limited time at the 2 for GHill there really aren't that many more minutes to be had.

Unless Finley goes into a huge slump - I expect the team to stay with this group and maybe add Gist as a hybrid 3/4 for next season.

Nonetheless, who from that group is Pop going to take out of the rotation?

We don't have a guy like Barry who was often in Pop's doghouse that he might be willing to replace for a guy JR Smith. Udoka would fit that bill, but he can't crack the rotation himself. Barring an injury, I think those are the wings this year.

Now, if he can get a legit 5 without giving up too much, that I could see him making a move for.

Yeah, this is pretty much our roster. If we give up on Tolliver then maybe we can start auditioning small forwards but I imagine they'll wait to the last second to decide on Tolliver, and probably just stay with him.

I think I'll wait until he plays more than two games to judge how he's doing in Lega Due.

There's also the business of actually being able to sign him, which one can never count on midseason. Maybe if he left them and joined the D-League we could consider him to be available. Until then two of the best candidates for tweener forward already play for the Toros. You could probably count Erik Daniels in the mix too since he has been playing a lot of center this season. Pickings are a little slim in that niche this year.

Maybe James May will play some SF now that Cheikh Samb will be playing center for Colorado. Trey Gilder is also doing well for them, but he looks like he's on a hunger strike.

Any additions to the Spurs this year would have to be an experienced player, someone ready to contribute immediately. Definitely no "projects". I think Gist is possible for next year if he does well in Europe.
