Before anyone starts yelling, yes, I understand that Bruce Bowen is a cheap dirty overrated elite defender, but how does that excuse the fact the Bowen does nothing else on the court? It might just be me, but I don't see how a man that has career averages of 6.5 PPG, 2.9 RPG, 1.3 AST, and .9 SPG has such a great reputation. (No, that is not a misprint on the steals number. The mighty Bruce Bowen has indeed averaged less than a steal per game for his career, and in fact has never averaged more than 1.4 in any single season.) In the Spurs three championship years Bowen's PERs were 9.1, 9.5, and 7.1.

Bruce is valuable because all the little things he does that the casual fan doesn't see have no way of being tracked as a stat. Popovich is probably the toughest defensive minded coach there is in the NBA. If he didn't notice or appreciate Bruce's impact he would have been gone a long time ago.

Absolutely. Bowen's not a stat filler so you'll never want to have him as a player on your fantasy league team, but in real world situations, he brings intangibles that are essential to being a successful ballclub.

I too had a nagging feeling way in the back of my mind about how Bruce is only a timely shooter, a player that freely drives towards the basket when no one else is generating any offense, a selfish rebounder looking only to pad his rebound stats, and most telling of all a sullen, quiet and humorless drain on the team's playoff efforts what with his poor 3 pt. shooting overtaking his regular season 3 pt. percentage, can't somebody trade him for a decent player, like maybe Raja Bell.

This person is suffering from what I call the "Superstar" mentality.

You'll see this reflected in today's media. LeBron got 3 (THREE!) dunks the entire series. Yet, did we see them all over and over again? Yes. How many times are we going to see Kobe highlights where he blocks out well? How about a KG highlight from double-teaming well? Or then, there's the Amare highlight when he disrupted a passing lane and caused a turnover.

The fact is that people suffering from Superstar mentality fail to see the "team" effort involved in winning a championship. Michael Jordan knew all about it. I saw an interview one time where someone asked him who he would pick to take a shot with the game on the line. Without blinking, he said Steve Kerr. Why? Because he recognized Steve Kerr's role on the team as a precision, clutch shooter. Not because of any fake formula.

Teams that realize that there are 12 men that play roles on the team, are the teams that have the most titles.
