Not who is better but who would you rather have on your team? I posted this up on bbb.net and Manu so far is getting killed. Current Poll is something like 10 to 2 in favor of Marion.

Marion is not totally worthless, but he's more of a "system" guy. He's like those Texas Tech QBs...big numbers, rarely much substance.
Shocking...no votes for Marion yet... :lol

Marion is very limited. He is a "streak shooter," and is and has been basically worthless in play0offs. On the other hand, Manu is THE MAN!!!

The problem with this question is, it depends on how you ask. If you are strictly chosing between the two stat wise, it creates a very close comparison. However Manu is so much more than a stat to the Spurs. Manu became a part of San Antonio culture, as oddly as that sounds, when he spoke to the Alamodome crowd in spanish after the Title in 2003. The Latino community instantly embraced him and gave him a home. He wasn't even really a huge cog of the 2003 Ring, yet suddenly he was the #3 Spur behind David and Tim (tho some may argue the 3/4 spot with Malik). Manu was a superstar in San Antonio before he was a superstar on the court. A unique situation that I don't believe you could duplicate anywhere else.
Sure, if the story were told differently, Marion might very well be a very popular Spur here, very productive, very team oriented, who knows. After already having Manu, there is absolutely zero way, however, that Marion could replace him. He would be the next Nazr - the guy that you cheer for because he is on your team, but that you never really like because he replaced Malik, and that you were not unhappy to see go when he did because you felt no real connection to him.

I have always liked Shawn Marion, I think if you give him a coach who tells him not to shoot that sick ass three ball of his, better yet, not to shoot ANY jumpshots....but to lock down your opponent at all costs, rebound like your life depends on it, and in the process clean up the garbage of our main guy, he'd be an amazing talent.
He doesn't deserve his contract, but he'd still be an amazing talent. He has one of the quickest second jumps I've ever seen. I wouldn't want to trade Manu for him, because Manu has earned respect and love through his actions, but think about this....
Marion + Bowen on same team = Marion never faces the man who owns him in the playoffs.

I'm no FWD or Marcus Bryant, but I would like to see Marions numbers in lost playoff series that were not against the Spurs. I know he becomes Mr Invisible against us, but does he really do it against other teams?

On my fantasy team I'll take Marion.
In the real world I'll take Manu, who is clutch as a manual gearbox. ;)
Would Marion have carried us in games 1, 2 and 7 of the Finals in 2005? i doubt it. Does marion dismantle teams with his smarts, and simply by getting to the line time and again? Nup.
Also, depends on the team. Manu is a perfect fit for us. Marion may be a better fit than Manu on a team that already has a clutch slasher.

Excellent defender. Great shooter although streaky. Understands game and a good team player. He can take over games. He could be a #1 on alot of teams. Has exciting plays that can change games.

Do you remember how good Marion's suns were before they got Nash and Amare? He is a dime a dozen talent that puts up excellent stats. He's the ultimate Antwan Jamison, Jason Richardson, Shareef Abdur Rahim, etc. He puts up great numbers that never really translate into the Win column.
Manu is the exact opposite, everything he does is crucial to any team he has been on. And he does everything he can to win.
This comparison is not even close, if you take out stats, Manu beats Marion so completely it's like a comparing a cat and a mouse.

Yeah right. On a 25-win team. I can't wait for his overrated ass to be traded to Boston or Atlanta. If he becomes the main man, his go-to move will probably be to fling the ball in the general region of the basket and try to get an offensive tip-in.
Has exciting plays that can change games.
Can't create off the dribble, can't shoot unless wide open, and then too is streaky. Useless in crunch time. Can't defend premier PFs like Duncan. Can't defend premier swingmen like Kobe or LeBron. Can't defend quicker guards. Who exactly can he defend? Gets voted as #4 on the DPOY list by the clueless media, yet can't break the All-D 2nd team (oh right, the coaches vote on this one).
The most amazing thing about Marion is that he makes $17 million. And is arguably the 3rd or maybe 4th best player on his team.

He's always going to have decent numbers with his atheticism and his activity, but he has NEVER put an imprint on a playoff game where everyone can see Marion was the star of the match.
“They run like deer, jump like deer and think like deer.”
He has been owned time and time again by Manu/Tp and then it translates into his offensive game. He passes up shots and does uses his invisibiliy shield that he's learned from Dirkie. He isn't really a natural post up player, so he can't take full advantage when smaller players are guarding him. AND does marion ever drive in a half court offense?
These are his number for this post season:
http://img296.imageshack.us/img296/7293/boxmarionze3.jpg
He shot more poorly against the fakers than against us but his numbers overall are good. Because of players like Marion and Dirkie, the NBA needs to tabulate all fourth quarter stats separatly. There's that stat and also the "Most shots made when your team really needed it shot" statistic. Fuck the rules changes for now, Sternie needs to focus on adding stat categories.

It is no a so obvious choice.
Marion is more consistant, is a great regular season player, has always a great run with MVP statistics... but it never happens in PO.
Manu is a proven playoff winner, is clutch... but is inconsistant.
Marion can be shut down by most teams. Manu can't.
If I am average team and want to go to the playoff... I would probably go with Mariont the 20/10 guy. But if I am the Spurs and want to repeat in 08... Manu is a no brainer.
Last thing : Marion makes superstar money. You don't want to have 16millions $ on a guy who can't create for himself or for others.

Because Marion has never been coached by a coach of Pop's caliber.
Nor has he played with a champion like Duncan.
Nor has he led any team to any championships in his life. For the record, I would take Joe Dumars and Dennis Johnson over Lafayette Lever despite the stats, or Tom Chambers, or Carter for that matter, because Joe D and DJ comes up big in important situations, while the other come up big in situations of minimal importance.

If they kept stats on "desire and heart" it (the stat sheet) wouldn't even be close.
Sometimes I think Manu simply "wills" the Spurs to win, by playing his heart out and laying it all on the line.
I wouldn't mind seeing Marion on this team, but when it comes down to Manu or Marion, well it's going to be Manu all the time every time.
