Man, oh, man, glad I got this during the holidays because I am totally addicted! It is the crack of grand strategy gaming, so many levels of complexity it's unreal.

For anyone who liked Civ 1/2/3, move onto 4. They rebuilt the game from the ground up and revolutionised it totally. The AI is much better (the computer doesn't just spam you with cities any more, it develops more along the lines of a real civilisation), there are new techs and units, a new battle system, new city management and culture, great people, 25 ways to tweak your government, and so, so much more!

If you like strategy games, it doesn't get better than this, although I warn you that you will get killed for your first few games and reading the manual really helps.

I am currently beating the computer on the level below even with the AI (whereas i beat the other Civs on the highest level quite easily after a while), but it took me a week to work out how.

(Hint: the "slavery" civic is really important in the early development of your civ)

Man, I loved CIV3. I seriously had a cramp in my thumb for weeks after I figured out how to beat it. Now, if I could only find the time to play it...

Civ4 was right there with Civ2 and 3 in terms of fun, loved that game to death until my piece of shit computer got wrecked by virus. So far though my favorite was 3 just because of the graphics, dont know why but i prefer the 2d stuff. Theres some really cool mods out there for all of the Civilizations, I know in 3 I dled a graphics pack that made everything into watercolor images and made a cool difference. Google Civilization Mods and theres a ton of stuff

Dark Reign, I love my culture bombs too... cookin' up 4 to unleash on the poor Frenchies right at the moment. Can you beat it at high levels yet? What is your focus? I met a guy the other night who is a pure financial player, although my civs tend to involve a bit of everything... getting ahead in one or two military techs is crucial to me though. And I'm getting better at super-specialising cities.

Right now I'm just going for a domination victory - 3 civs down, two more should get me the land and peeps I need. I got ahead in the tech race and my cavalry have made short work of anything they can put up against me. It's sorta cool to destroy other civs with 1870s-style blue trouser cavalry... :devil

As for you civ 2 and 3 fans, if you haven't played 4 give it a go because, as I said, it is at another level. Firaxis fixed all of the bugs that used to annoy the crap out of me, and added many new elements to the game.

i used to play civ 3 a shitload... for some reason i could never bring myself to choose a faction other than the americans... much like i can never bring myself to choose another team besides the spurs on a basketball sim.

i used to hate it to fucking shit when some piece of shit frigate would take out one of my batteships... mother fuckers.

Played 2, 3 and 4. I was a 3 junkie for a while, played 4 quite a bit when it first came out but didn't enjoy it as much as 3.

I can't figure out why I like 3 the best there's just something about it that I can play it longer than the others.

Jman...American Empire sucks in Civ 3...Romans all the way.

Says the 30 year old DJ that spends most of his time trying to insult other posters on a Spurs message board, and the rest of his time on a kings board that bans him

4 is much more difficult than 1, 2 or 3 IMHO. You only unlock the goodies in 4 when you really pay attention to every detail, and reading the rule book is essential to crafting a strategy that will work.

Oh, and frigates don't kill battleships in 4. They changed the combat system to eliminate that sort of BS.

As for getting a life, I happen to be single, on holidays and sick with a cold right now, so I think Civ 4 is about the right thing to be doing... I have to get a life. :depressed
