I've been wondering the same thing all day.

I just knew we were gonna take him or Ali T-something (forgot his last name) with the 58th pick.

Ali Traore.

I was literally chanting "Dowdell Dowdell" when we were on the board. But when they called the Greek kid's name I just sighed and said to myself "I should have known".

Then again, Dowdell as a FA isn't a bad thing. Just make it happen!

Spurs need to do something with Beno if they want to have a roster spot available for a project PG like Dowdell. If Spurs don't find a nba team ready to take Beno's salary they will face a dilemna : Is Dowdell (or someone else) a good enough project to do the costly move of waiving Beno and giving a contract to Dowdell ?
I'm not sure that Beno will accept a buyout, he seems quite happy to be Spurs' cheerleader.

We could always stick him on the Toros and let him develop there this season and bring him in next year.

That still requires a roster spot on the parent club.

Not anymore now that the Spurs own the Toros and are their sole NBA affiliate.

Only if you sign him to an NBA contract and send him down. Not if you sign him to a D-League contract and call him up...next year.

Dowdell will play for Sonics summer league.

Dowdell's agent, Kareem Memarian, said Seattle was going to take Dowdell with the 35th pick. But the Sonics had to send that selection, Louisiana State's Glen Davis, to the Boston Celtics as part of a blockbuster deal that shipped franchise guard Ray Allen to Boston. The Sonics are rebuilding their team around No.2 pick Kevin Durant, a former Oak Hill Academy star.

After that trade, Memarian said the Sonics told him they planned to bring Dowdell to their summer league. Memarian said he then notified other teams of this informal agreement, but added, "We still had other options, too. I didn't tell other teams not to draft him."

Dowdell worked out twice for the Sonics, including a last-minute workout Tuesday in Seattle. New Sonics General Manager Sam Presti also saw Dowdell work out for San Antonio, which previously employed Presti as its assistant general manager.

So Dowdell undrafted was a CIA Presti move. :rolleyes

Seems if the Spurs were really high on him they would have picked him at 58. Maybe the second workout didn't go so well.

They had a promise to the Greek kid. If they flew that kid out the the Garden, had him sit there all night, and then DIDN'T pick him I think it would have hurt their reputation. They didn't want to risk hurting their future 2nd round picks confidence in them by not taking the guy. Besides, Dowdell only had to slide 2 more picks and he would be available to them again.

I guess that Dowdell hasn't played well enough in summer league to get a guaranteed contract with a nba team.

He faces two options : either playing in Europe with a guaranteed contract or trying to play in nba without a guaranteed contract. Players without a guaranteed contract are usually waived at the end of the training camp and play in DLeague where salaries are low and the competition isn't very interesting.
Dowdell has chosen the safe solution.

A little funny fact :
In Nancy, Dowdell will play with TJ Parker (Tony's brother). Some people hoped to have Dowdell as Tony's backup one month ago and one month later, he ends up playing with Tony's brother on another continent.
