SEATTLE -- Mariners manager Mike Hargrove is resigning as of the end of Sunday's game against the Toronto Blue Jays.

The Mariners said John McLaren will be the new team manager and start the job Monday when Seattle plays in Kansas City.

Hargrove has been manager of the Mariners since October 2004. He is fifth among active managers with 1,187 career wins, including 191 with Seattle, heading into Sunday's game.

Hargrove said he has realized over the past few weeks that he cannot continue to do the job if his passion has begun to fade. He said this has been a great place to work and he's proud of the work the team has done to turn the club around over the past three years. Hargrove said he has high expectations for the team this season.

McLaren rejoined the Mariners this year as bench coach. He is in his 21st season as a big league coach and his 11th with Seattle. His 11 seasons as a Mariners coach are the most by any coach in Mariners history.

I wish Grover nothing but the best, but I can't say I'm sad to not see him in the manager's spot.

They've been playing better, but apparently, Grover's been saying his heart's not in it anymore.

This team would have had to win the pennant to save his job this season, though. That's a lot of pressure.

Next on the list - Bavasi.

It's pretty widely reported that Ichiro had his problems with Hargrove, so the chances of re-signing him just went higher.
