Nice sign by the Magic, but that is a lot of money to spending
5 years 75 million

Rashard Lewis will be making more money than approx. 20 players in the NBA. Is he a top 20-top 30 player? That's a whole lotta green ink. Guess Darko AND Grant Hill are gone. Now that Darko can't work a sign-and-trade, I doubt he's getting that $10 million per year he was looking for. Only Milwaukee, Atlanta, Charlotte, and maybe Memphis will be able to afford a contract like that. Don't see any of them giving Darko that kind of money. Some team might get a decent deal by signing him for the MLE. Interesting to see whether this deal starts the domino effect.

$10 million a year for Darko is way too much. He deserves nothing more than the LLE. Good luck with that Kid.

I'd rather see Lewis in Orlando than Houston. We weren't getting him so this works for me.

One more thing to love about the summer...questionable huge free agent contracts in the NBA. And it's just getting started! :spin Can't wait to watch it all unfold.

Somebody pointed this out on another thread but D'Antoni's refusal to trade Marion last summer and now for tax purposes has resulted in Phoenix selling off James Jones and FOUR first-round draft picks. Nash, Amare and Marion = $38 million in cap space.

HAHAHAHAHAHA.

The Orlando Magic are gearing up for a big day on Wednesday afternoon, getting ready to announce the signing of Rashard Lewis, their highest profile acquisition since throwing money at Grant Hill and Tracy McGrady in 2000.

Throwing money around would be an accurate term for what Orlando is doing to get Lewis, because thanks to new salary cap adjustments, the Magic can hand him considerably more money than the five-year, $75 million deal that was originally rumored to have lured him to central Florida.

In fact, if a rumored sign-and-trade deal comes to fruition, Lewis' contract could approach over $110 million for six years.

...To make Lewis' big payday happen, the Magic will relinquish the rights to Darko Milicic, which makes him free to sign with anyone else. Because he was still under his original rookie contract, Orlando was the only team that could've signed him to a six-year deal and gone over the cap to match any offer.

"We hope to sign a free agent tomorrow, and that leaves Darko free and clear," Smith said, referring to Lewis but not mentioning him directly out of respect to the NBA's moratorium on signings, which expires at midnight Tuesday. "He's moved on and we've moved on, too."

With the new Salary Cap Lewis' contract will pay him $126.4 million dollars over 6 years after the s&t is done. In his final year, he will make $25.8 million. Magic just f*cked up big time.

What are the Magic thinking? Shard is a all-star type player but he is getting top 3 player salary. This deal will destroy the Magic's franchise. Lets not forget they just signed Dwight to a 90 million deal or something close to that.

Magic and Sonics did a sign and trade. Magic got Lewis and Sonics got $9M exception and a condition pick in 2009.

D12 better sign a 3year extention and ftl on the magic

looks like they are holding back on that new arena, which i see will play in a role pending on d12s extention or future....

The Sonics have agreed to sign forward Rashard Lewis to a six-year contract worth the NBA maximum and then send him to the Orlando Magic for a conditional second-round pick and a trade exception worth between $9 million and $9.5 million, the PI has learned.

if this is true, seems like a good deal for Seattle.

well they just lost Hill, Orlando needed a SF to soak up all their money filling Hill's role as a money void.

Well they arent the orlando magic if they dont have a ridiculous contract crippling them. Now they are praying he can spend the next few years out by injury so they can keep their losing ways.

Orlando now needs size in the frontcourt. Possible trading partner.

And this article shows why they will be screwed (just like the Suns) in a few years.

It's either a title or misery.
