Good move. Be nice to have him around after Horry hangs em up next year. I'm wondering if the re-signing of Oberto and Bonner cut into the 2008 Plan

timvp
07-03-2007, 07:39 PM
Bonner is a deceptively key part of the Spurs' future. Outside of Horry, he's the only perimeter big the Spurs have on their team or in Europe. Oberto, Elson, Butler, Splitter and Mahinmi are all nice to have, but there are situations where you have to put four shooters around Duncan.

Bonner improved his rebounding greatly from his first two years in the league and I think he'll shoot better down the road. Shooters always struggle in their first year in San Antonio. And really, I don't know if the 38.3% Bonner shot last year on three-pointers can be considered struggling.

As a future 7th or 8th man in a rotation, Bonner is a nice piece.

T Park

Yeah good to see Bonner come back.

People forget how damn good he was playing when he got hurt.

He was a candidate to move into the starting lineup ahead of Oberto and Elson.

Props Matt :tu

if that's true, that means there are zero roster spots available if the Spurs sign Marcus Williams, barring someone being traded (Barry, Butler, Elson, Beno) or flat out cut (Beno, White).

So no Scola . . . Mahinmi . . . or even Nocioni in Scola's place . . . or any free agent with the MLE.

This also puts the finishing touches on killing the 08 plan, along with Oberto and Vaughn's re-ups.

SpursFanInAustin
07-03-2007, 07:41 PM
why? so he can ride the bench for the rest of his career and play 4 minutes a game?

He's probably gonna take all of Horry's minutes in the reg season. Probably rotate with Oberto and Elson.

Yeah cause you couldn't trade a guy for draft picks...

So no Scola . . . Mahinmi . . . or even Nocioni in Scola's place . . . or any free agent with the MLE. This was all expected. That's why some of us have been talking about the need for roster spots since the beginning of last year.

However, the Spurs would find room for Nocioni. Williams and even James White can be released if it comes down to that.

Sure, there is a roster crunch but there are two spots still not set in stone (Williams and White), while it's probably possible to trade away Udrih or Butler in some sort of mini salary dump.

This also puts the finishing touches on killing the 08 plan, along with Oberto and Vaughn's re-ups.

It depends. If the cap number jumps up due to the new TV contract and Bonner and Oberto's contracts are small enough, the Spurs could still have some money to spend. The Vaughn signing isn't of much consequence since the difference between his cap number and the number automatically given to empty roster spots isn't that great.

If the Spurs still have more than the MLE next summer when it's all said and done, the 2008 plan will still be alive.

However, I'm all for Nocioni and the death of the 2008 plan. :hat

objective

If the Spurs were going to trade on of those guys for picks I think it would have happened already.

At most I think Beno gets straight up cut right before training camp with the Spurs doing the old "We cut him early so he can sign on with another team right now early in camp" speech.

Bonner does represent something that Pop needed several times this past season. A Big who can actually score when the well has gone dry, while helping at the other end with decent team defense and rebounding.

Example: A night in March @ Sacramento. Corliss Williamson was abusing Robert Horry and Fab like a banshee in the post. The Spurs missed shots left and right and Pop needed a tourniquet to stop the bleeding. In came Bonner with a little offense and some excellent defense to help stem the tide until Manu re-engaged and Tony hit a circus shot to pull out a tough win.

Bonner hustles his rear-end off and is sometimes just what the team needs to snap out of funks.

Spurs will re-sign Bonner

Web Posted: 07/03/2007 11:37 PM CDT

San Antonio Express-News

Three days into the NBA's free-agency period, the Spurs have accomplished their goal of keeping their roster virtually intact.

The Spurs reached agreement Tuesday with forward Matt Bonner, the last of the three free agents they hoped to re-sign, on a three-year contract worth about $9 million.

"Matt always wanted to stay with the Spurs, so he's very excited to be coming back," said Kenny Grant, Bonner's agent.

The Spurs also have reached agreements with center Fabricio Oberto (three years, $10.5 million) and Jacque Vaughn (two years, $2.5 million). Free agents can't sign contracts until July 11.

The agreements mean the Spurs will have 14 of the 15 members from last season's team under contract. Free-agent forward Melvin Ely is expected to sign with another team.

From here on out the Spurs can do a few things...

1) Perform a sign and trade for a new player, hopefully Nocioni or someone who fills the needs of reserve SF and reserve PG.
2) Sign a FA to fill a need
3) Stay pat and see how White and Williams do in Summer ball and camp.

I hope if the Spurs do decide to make a move, it's to address the lack of depth at SF or PG.

The Spurs also have reached agreements with center Fabricio Oberto (three years, $10.5 million) Very nice for a starting center coming off of a championship.

Add in Vaughn at the veteran's minimum and the Spurs did a nice job of re-signing all three guys to reasonable contracts.

Just scraping up against the Lux Tax Threshold...if not slightly over it....that's including White's deal but not Williams'. 67-68 million I think. And they still have their MLE.

So that they dont hit the luxury tax.

i like this signing a lot, he's slower then shit, but he makes up for that with his passion for the game, it's fun watching him play cause he's always hustling..... and the deal he got isn't all that bad........... and he'll get plenty of playing time, he was getting that playing time till he broke himself..... and horry will be the basketball version of roger clemens next year, so there will be plenty of playing time

Vaughn and Oberto contracts are steals.
Vaughn is an average and reliable backup PG. Most of them are paid $3M/year and he will only cost $770k.
Players who plays well in playoffs get huge contracts like Jerome James 2 years ago :lol . After his very good playoff srun, $10.5M for Oberto is really good.

The Bonner contract is nice.
$3M/year isn't overpaid or underpaid for a player like Bonner. IMO, it's the good contract for him. He gets less than players like Brian Cook or Scalabrine and I rather have Bonner than them.

Sweet!!!!!!!!!!!!

If Bonner doesn't get hurt he's a much bigger part of this team this year goinginto the playoffs. Sadly he never regained form and te team geled around other players while he was out, but god damn this makes me happy. Its only a matter of time before Matt breaks into the rotation.

BTW, so much for the much vaunted 08 plan. Thats 3 3 year contracts in 3 days.

The Spurs will still have more than the MLE. We can still get a SF/SG or PF/SF through free-agency. Not only that, we will still have the MLE to sign someone. But you are right though, we probably wont' have enough for say...Brand anymore.

YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS! God these past 48 hours have made a Mavs fan like myself feel GREAT! The Spurs literally have their same exact roster returning which now confirms the Mavs are now the team to beat again in the West! I can't be any happier than I am right now. I bet the Mavs organization is celebrating about this as well. :elephant :elephant :elephant :elephant :elephant

Ilike Bonner OK but if he's worth this contract, then Oberto got jobbed.

Eh...You also have to take into account that Bonner's 27 and Oberto's 32, so Bonner still has a little more upside in terms of age.

I said 3 yrs 10 to 12 M, no team but player option.
BTW,Is there a team or player Opt out clause in that contract?

This really opens the door to send Beno to Cleveland for their trade exception. Next, a trade of Barry and Scola for a younger player maybe to Golden State or Chicago. Look for the Gasol to Chicago deal to fall through as Memphis signed Navarro to keep Gasol happy. Expect Nocioni to get a contract offer from Memphis for around 6 mil. Chicago will match and try to trade. The possiblity of Nocioni, Duhon or both ending up in SA is logical.

I like the move of bringing back known quantities, and I have no doubt that each will play an equally significant role in the run to repeat next year. But I do have a few questions...

With likely only one roster spot remaining, will the Spurs bring back White AND sign their second round pick, Williams, to a standard second round-type contract?

Will the Spurs keep the same players active as were active for most of last year? Specifically, will Jackie Butler get an opportunity to prove that he can be a significant contributor to this team as their second-best low post option?

I personally hope that Butler supplants Elson, and given that the 15th roster spot is not likely to crack the rotation, the Spurs should see what they have in Marcus Williams and James White.

:lol :(

He definitely has characterized these last 4 years though.
