Spurs owner to head TP&W
By RAY SASSER / Outdoors Writer
Gov. Rick Perry has named Peter M. Holt chairman of the Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission. Holt, majority owner of the San Antonio Spurs, replaces Joseph B.C. Fitzsimons, also of San Antonio.
Fitzsimons' six-year term expired in February, as did positions held by Phillip Montgomery of Dallas and Donato Ramos of Laredo. Ramos is the commission's vice chairman. Last year, Ned Holmes of Houston resigned his TP&W Commission seat to accept a post on the Texas Department of Transportation.
Perry has not indicated when he will name commissioners to fill the four vacancies. The commission's next scheduled meeting is in August.
Holt and Fitzsimons are on a search committee to find a replacement for TP&W executive director Bob Cook, who plans to retire in August. Houston's T. Dan Friedkin and Amarillo's Mark Bivins are also on the search committee. So is former commission chairman Lee Bass of Fort Worth.
The TP&W Commission serves as a board of directors for the 2,500-person state agency, which sets game and fish laws and manages state parks. Commission appointments are highly prized.
