I put this thread up so that we can discuss the Cup in general and not have to go to one of the game threads

Anyway, looks like the US is done. Doesn't surprise me though, the US came in with a team that didn't promise anything, and it goes out not having accomplished anything, simple math.

As far as the rest are concerned, Brasil, Mexico, Argentina, Paraguay, Venezuela and Peru are all qualified already.

What the fuck is Lucho Gonzalez doing in there?? Get him the fuck out! He's useless!

Typhoon

He did play horrible...anyways good job Argentina, now you don't have to play Mexico, who wants to beat you with a passion and always will bring it against you...don't have to change locations and play an easier team Peru.

MaNuMaNiAc
07-05-2007, 10:25 PM
thats debatable. Peru is playing very well. Of course so is Mexico. Either way, we're going to have to beat everyone in order to win this thing, and if Mexico is as good as advertised we'll meet somewhere along the line.

Bye bye Chile... Brazil 3 - 0 Chile at half

MaNuMaNiAc

4 - 0 now... this could end up being like 7 or 8 to 0 by the way Chile is playing. They deserve to be eliminated for playing this way

Couldn't catch the Mexico game, was it good? or did Paraguay just lay down and died? Looks like Mexico decimated them. Well done

Paraguay was doomed from the start, 2 minutes and they get a penalty, red card to the keeper, which it wasn't in my opinion...so yeah losing a good keeper and -1 guy was tough for Paraguay and it showed...but props to Mexico for taking opportunity of the hurted Paraguay..

Now Argentina vs Mexico, good match but I think Mexico will lose, but who knows, anything can happen in football!

So if a goalie sweep-kicks the forward that is dribbling the ball one-on-one with him isn't a penalty? Did you see the goalie's leg kick upward during the foul?

True....

But they seemed invinsible yesterday... idk, maybe it's just me...

The way the chemistry's going right now with Nery and the other players, it's going to be really hard to keep em off the offensive...

we've also been the best defensive team in the cup... allowin just one goal in the 4 games...

Don't underestimate Mexico... you guys kinda did that in the World Cup and you almost left too early... took Argentina an amazing goal to get em to the next round... argueable the best goal of the cup...

but yeah I guess we'll see...

Actually if anything it's getting better...

They're getting younger..... and more athletic, and that's not saying much..

Borgetti is no longer starting and Omar is coming off the bench...
Hugo Sanchez assembled the team beautifully in my opinion... because he's benching old players that don't want to play... and putting in players that are giving it all on the field just for the flag..

and it's worked nicely... especially with Nery.... Omar Bravo, C. Blanco, and Borgetti have really not done much but gotten leftovers in this cup.... except Borgetti.. he hasn't really seen much playing time since he got injured.

Argentina has clearly been the better team. There's no way Mexico is going to be able to contain Messi/Tevez in attack. They will get the better of the possession with their great one touch passing. The only reason I think the game will be close is because of Nery Castillo

Mexico has been the best defensive team in the cup... I'm sure they can try to contain em, or atleast they'll do better than other teams have...

Marquez has never really been a scorer, and he's stayed mostly on the defense for this cup, so I don't see it at all.... but he's played good against argentina.. so maybe...

and ugh... we just got bad news..

apparently Nery Castillo is doubtful for because of a swollen knee.. I really hope he gets better quick, cuz if we lose Nery our chances drop....

Yeah but Nery isn't doing SHIT! He can't even complete one pass! All this time I thought Hugo was bluffing by saying he was hurt and all, but maybe it is true. Also, Nery is playing WAY too low - 95% of the time he receives the ball, he is not even at midfield (on Mexico's side).

Nery needs to step up, or Bofo or Bravo are coming in (God forbid Cuauh from coming in...)

Oswaldo is a veteran and has passion for the game, he's also a leader... and he was one of the two that wasn't nervous or shaken at the begginning of the game, the other one being Nery...

Idk but if we lose I don't mind it being with Oswaldo as the keeper.... just keep him there until he loses all of it.......

Now that I saw the replay it can be understandable how he didn't see the Argentinian, he was really sorrounded by the Mexicans up until his leg came up

Nery has been really trying to attack, but his decisions have been very bad.. he's trying to share the ball too much... and he's losing it... I think he's going to be more aggressive in the 2nd half.... Mexico's going to be more calm

You're right, Mexico lost, and they lost convincingly to a better team. I'm not the one that should get over it, its that guy.

wow... the worst game by Argentina I've seen since the last time Brasil handed our asses 3 - 0. I don't know what the fuck it is... against everyone else we play beautifully, but when it comes time to play Brasil, OUR NUTS FUCKING SHRINK!! Its a fact, there's no denying it, we are fucking scared of Brasil.

Horrible, horrible first half. Couldn't buy a decent pass to save our lives.

Two more things: Riquelme is a fucking no show. Not only is he a no show, he's not even fucking trying!

and I love Ayala, but its going to be hard to forgive that IDIOTIC own goal...

It's shocking how seriously Argentina is being outplayed by Brazil. Brazil is just too damn hungry and Argentina look like lost little boys.

they are outplaying us in every single aspect. They're running harder, they're passing better, they're more accurate with their shots, they're defending like I've never seen Brasil defend, and on top of it all, they are ten times more athletic. If team play can't save us, Messi is going to have to literally become Maradona out there, cocaine habit and all

before I go, I'd like to give props to Brasil. They THOROUGHLY outplayed us in every way possible. Their B team is light years better than our A team, without a fucking doubt. Great game by Brasil, they deserve to be champs

:tu commend you for taking the loss like a man. But you surely are allowed to be disappointed by Argentina's effort tonight.

riquelme did what he does, that wasnt the problem. the problem was we never had an inside presence when brazil was only giving us freekicks. milito should have gone in before aimar or gonzalez. having to bring up our defenders in search of a goal - and being rushed to get back after the own goal- is what killed us. i cant believe we couldnt score one single goal!

Today it showed again how Brazil exposed Argentina’s defensive weaknesses, and they took every opportunity of it... (This has been going on for a long time) Argentina has a great team, probably is the best team with individual talent in the world, but I don’t see a leader that makes them play together, when they find such a player Argentina will truly shine...and also its pretty clear that Argentina's keeper and most of their defense needs to go, Im sure Basile saw that today.

Everyone has a team that will be a pain in the ass to beat, unfortunately for Argentina is Brazil, excellent team at opening the field while attacking, and Argentina’s old defenders couldn’t keep up.

A sad ending for Argentina, but Im sure they'll recover and come back stronger than ever...some excellent players in Sub-20 for Argentina.

Futbol is all about how you feel against an opponent.... Mexico usually does well against brazil...... they don't fear them or respect them too much... we are somewhat intimidated by argentina alot...

it affects they way they play immensely.. thats why you can say it was all about that in this cup...

Mexico beat brazil convincingly... and they used most of the bench for that game, even a different goal keeper... they got the starters against argentina and they broke down...

oh well... nice job by brazil.. even though i really dont think they deserved this cup.

I'd also like to commend Brasil for their sportsmanship. In the past, there have been times where both teams, Brasil and Argentina, have heckled the loser, singing and taunting. I've always found this disgusting and demeaning, from both sides. This Brasil team beat us fairly, and with respect. Respect earns respect, and they have earned mine.

After sleeping on it, this defeat doesn't seem so bitter now. I mean, sure, its clear now that this team needs a lot more work than what was apparent, what with great performances against Peru and Mexico.

Fast, athletic teams are our cryptonite, specially if that team is Brasil :lol Our defense needs to go, love Ayala but its time for new blood. We need someone to help Mascherano in the middle, we can't expect the man to deal with 3 or 4 opposing players EVERY time! CHRIST! the man is good, but not THAT good! Our offense got dismantled as well, mainly due to the fact Brasil shut down Riquelme, completely and utterly. I'm surprised people hadn't figured this out before, we run on Riquelme, he's our fuel, he distributes the ball, he organizes our offense, you shut HIM down, and we're practically left at the mercy of Messi's brilliance, or Tevez' grit. I have to say though, its embarrassing how completely Riquelme was shut down, but not really that surprising if one thinks about it. The man doesn't run, period! He's like a 60 year old man out there. I mean sure he distributes the ball very well, he's got great vision of the field, but close his passing lanes and he can't do shit alone... not like he used to anyway.

Anyway, I think our boys did well, not great, but well. Had one hell of a tournament up until coming across a clearly motivated Brasil. I don't really think they are better, just that they match up very well with us, and for some reason, they seem to have wanted it more. Hopefully this will be a good learning experience for us (god knows we haven't learned shit from the last time Brasil kicked our asses in much the same manner) and we get it through our thick skulls that DEFENSE is a very important part of football, and ours was practically non existent.

37fouls commited by bra team .....

exactly, all argentina had were set pieces and we didnt have the personnel to capitalize them. now if brazil had a player sent off we would have been in great shape with the players we had but that didnt happen.

brazil's first goal was a great goal that you cant really do much about. the own goal and the counter attack for the 3rd were the result of argentina being too anxious moving up for the equaliser. the "smurfs"- tevez, messi, aimar, riquelme- were never going to win a ball in the air and that forced our defensive players to move further up. it killed us. i think not having crespo and not playing milito was much more of a problem than brasil "shutting down" riquelme by giving him FK. and though ayala is old and i hate the choking hack heinze, the argentina defense wasnt that bad, they were just taken out of position by basile's idiotic changes. we removed veron and cambiasso who help mascherano for aimar and gonzalez who really didnt add anything to the team, in fact it made us smaller and more vulnerable to brazil. this is all on Basile IMO

They concentrate on offense too much, and if they're being defended well by any team, they're screwed.

Dunga made Basile his personal bitch.

Dunga is gonna be the next best coach in the world. He completely picked apart the mighty Argentine defense AND offense.

Argentina got buttfucked ugly. The main problem with Argentine players is they panic when they know its not working out and make the situation much worse. just like when they go to penalty kicks vs. anyone

I stopped reading after that, if you really think Argentina has a mighty defense, you really dont know what the fuck you are talking about... and Dunga plan was to cut Argentina's offense by fouling, what a genius that guy is...lol

Argentina has always played at the same pace. They have no changes in their tempo. Also, Argentina always makes really forced paces where there is little to no space when attacking, Brazil opens the game up and spreads the field and they all start running at the same time, changing paces, and htat's why they're good.
