Magic's Turkoglu to serve in Turkish army

Magic forward Hedo Turkoglu will complete his mandatory national military service in his native Turkey by serving a one-month tour of duty in the army this summer, according to the Orlando Sentinel.

The newspaper says if Turkoglu had been living in his homeland, an 18-month stint of military service would be required.
However, the 6-foot-10 Turkoglu says he will likely find himself working behind a desk.

"They'll teach me to fire a gun, but I won't be fighting," said Turkoglu, likening it to the National Guard.

Turkoglu became the first Turkish-born player in the NBA when the Sacramento Kings selected him with the 16th pick in the 2000 draft.

Acquired by the Magic as a free agent last summer, Turkoglu is thriving in his fifth NBA season, averaging 14.1 points in nearly 27 minutes per game off Orlando's bench.

Turkoglu still has strong ties to his native country and has played on the Turkish national team during each of the past three summers.

How Turkoglu's military service affects his availability for Turkey's national team (this summer) is not known. But he still seems to be looking forward to his off-court duty.

"It will be a good honor to serve my country," he said. "I'm one of them."

Oh.

Well what he does in his free time is his business. :lol

Right now I need him shooting on the court, not on the ranges.

One thing's for certain, he won't be eligible for sniper training.

BS. I had a friend who had to leave the country this summer to serve his 18 months in the Turkish Army.

He's avg. 14 with Orlando!?!!?!?! OMG!!!! Why the fuck couldn't he do that here?

But damn, we so should of paid him for the crap he gave us!

And since when is a 5th year player "still developing?"

"Why the fuck couldn't he do that here?"

He was 3rd or 4th option, not as many touches. His 3G% still sucks.

Note his FT% is up vs last year. T he FT Curse of Spurs has left him!!

I note his RPG is down a little. He had quite few games with 7 - 8 RBs for Spurs.

I wonder if the Turkish army issues matching camo purses?

TPark, I was as big a Turkoglu supporter as you could find when we made the trade, but I gradually came to see that he was like an old time stripteaser, showing you a little here and a little there and never enough. He is a gifted athlete and could have been a superstar, but his problems are all between his ears. I think that being in Sacramento's pussy system for 3 years ruined him. If the Spurs had been able to make the trade up in that draft, they could have had something special, but now he seems content to just do enough to draw his paycheck.

Hedo sucked in the LA series but he wasn't the only Spur who was less than stellar from beyond the arc in that series.

yep, based on Brent's contribution so far, Hedo off the bench would be better. I really hope that doesn't stay true much longer.

No, actually we don't have an army, he would be the first one. Better that than having thousands of people in an army... :rolleyes

It certainly did: fighting wars is never a solution, it is believed to be a solution only by stupid barbaric nations...
