St. Pierre is also young -- I don't see any of your welterweights as a probability, so the age thing is a moot point. That's specifically why I put Carwin as a down the road guy. Sanchez and Alves, I just don't see it at welter any time. Bisping maybe down the road after Anderson is gone, but there are a number of Middleweights who I think are better and the same age. Therefore, as I originally stated, I don't see it. In 8 years, you can bump the thread if anyone of them becomes a belt holder.

This kid is the future!

From Yahoo.com/mma

Over the past decade, Javier Mendez has built San Jose’s American Kickboxing Academy into one of the nation’s premier mixed martial arts training centers, with top fighters coming from all over the world.

When Mendez lists the five most talented fighters he’s seen walk through his doors and train, at least one name on the list will surprise you, if you’ve even heard of it.

No. 5 is Josh Koscheck, a former NCAA wrestling champion who is one of UFC’s top ranked welterweights. He came one takedown away from possibly beating Georges St. Pierre last summer.

No. 4 is Frank Shamrock, the former UFC champion who was the premier U.S. fighter of the late 1990s.

No. 3 is Cung Le, the current Strikeforce middleweight champion who was the top U.S. San Shou fighter before going into MMA.

No. 2 is B.J. Penn, the UFC lightweight champion, now ranked No. 3 in the Yahoo! Sports pound-for-pound rankings.

And No. 1 is Cain Velasquez.

If you do a double take and think “who is Cain Velasquez, and what is he doing on this list?” you wouldn’t be alone. Velasquez is a former Arizona State University wrestling star. In the 2006 NCAA tournament semifinals, he lost a close and controversial criteria decision after tying 2-2 with eventual NCAA champion Cole Konrad.

He’s only had eight minutes total of MMA competition ring time in compiling a 3-0 record.

On Saturday night, Mendez is figuring the world will take notice of the gym legend known in San Jose and spoken about with reverence by almost everyone as “The Killer,” when Velasquez faces former Purdue heavyweight Jake O’Brien on UFC’s Spike TV special from Las Vegas.

“Right now, he could walk in and be a good pro boxer,” said Mendez about someone who, aside from fooling around with gloves with some friends, had never even put on boxing gloves until August 2006. “He could not only be a good kickboxer, but he’s K-1 level (the Japanese group which is top organization for heavyweights in the world). He won a world championship in Jiu Jitsu (World No Gi world champion in the blue belt division in late 2007, 17 months after his first class). He’s the fastest learner I’ve ever had. And nobody trains harder. He trains harder than the lightweights.”

Mendez, who said Velasquez today could beat Randy Couture, said he saw something in him the first day he came through the door for a tryout. Velasquez was sparring with Jean Claude Leuyer, a top heavyweight kickboxer in the 90s who threw a head kick at him to show the newcomer who was boss. Velasquez received the kick and immediately slammed Leuyer down.

“Right then, I said, ‘He’s in,’” said Mendez.

But the real turning point came less than two months later. Velasquez was handing Paul Buentello, the gym’s best known heavyweight, his lumps in practice by using his wrestling to throw Buentello around.

Buentello came in banged up one day and asked Mendez if he and Velasquez could go at it strictly boxing, but what happened shocked everyone.

“He (Velasquez) beat him down,” said Mendez. “I was blown away.”

The idea was for him to get 10 or so fights on smaller shows before approaching UFC. But after missing a few months after breaking his hand in a Bodog Fight card in St. Petersburg, Russia in late 2006, his reputation was such that one fight after another fell through when opponents kept pulling out after they investigated who they were to be facing. He went without a fight for 16 months until his UFC debut.

Arizona State wrestling coach Tom Ortiz, who recruited him from high school, attributed a lot of his success to being such a mentally focused trainer.

“He always wants to train,” said Ortiz. “We’d have to tell him it was time to stop.”

Ortiz felt that Velasquez’s childhood background growing up in Yuma, AZ led to his work ethic. Velazquez worked the fields with his father at the crack of dawn, picking up and hauling watermelons for hours at a time, so he grew up with doing the same thing over and over again. It developed a mentality that thrived on repetition training in wrestling before MMA.

He was a high school state heavyweight champion in Arizona in 2001. The next year, he was national junior college champion at Iowa Central Community College. In his two years at Arizona State, he placed fifth in 2005 and fourth in 2006 at the NCAA’s as an undersized heavyweight who would have to eat heavy to keep his weight at 240 pounds, battling men like Konrad and current Olympic team superheavyweight Steve Mocco who would cut weight to make 285.

But there was a part of Velasquez’s mentality that wrestling itself wasn’t enough, which is why he decided against staying at Arizona State to help coach and try for the Olympic team.

“When I locked up (in matches), I wanted to do more than just wrestle,” Velasquez said. “I wanted to punch.”

He talked about leaving school after his junior year to get into MMA, but Ortiz told him if he promised to finish his senior year, he’d put him in touch with the right people to get him started.

“I think in a year he can beat Fedor (Emelianenko),” said Daniel Puder, who has many times taken his lumps in training from Velasquez. “The thing is, he’s got the greatest conditioning of anyone. He’s got the speed of a lightweight and the strength of a heavyweight. You can’t out-quick him. “You can’t out power him. You can’t outlast him. He doesn’t just beat people in the gym, he massacres them. It’s almost impossible to last a round. His only weakness possibly is to get him with technique. But you can only get a move on him twice, because he learns instantaneously.”

But there is a big step between being the toughest guy in the gym, even at a gym filled with world class fighters, and dominating in competition.

O’Brien, 10-1, poses an interesting challenge. His wrestling pedigree is similar and he has a lot more big show experience. But there are questions regarding anyone who comes back from a broken neck, and he suffered his first pro loss, to Andrei Arlovski, in his most recent fight.

The match was put together with the idea that their wrestling will cancel out, so to speak, and that Velasquez can avoid being taken down by O’Brien, and thus it will turn into a stand-up battle. But MMA is often unpredictable.

Velasquez is one of UFC’s three project heavyweights along with Brock Lesnar and Shane Carwin that have debuted this year. All there are All-American heavyweight wrestling powerhouses and physical freaks that the company is hoping will carry the division depleted with the losses over the last several months of Couture, Tim Sylvia, Arlovski and the flaming out of Mirko Cro Cop.

Velasquez destroyed Brad Morris in his UFC debut on April 19 in Montreal in a prelim match in 2:10. He came in touted about his wrestling credentials, but it was his fast and heavy hands that came into play. UFC officials were upset time ran out on the pay-per-view before the match could be aired on tape, as it was clear there was something there. So this time he will be put on live.

It’s premature to shine up a championship belt, let alone the Hall of Fame plaque based on gym hype.

“But think about this, a dominant heavyweight champion, and he’s Mexican,” said Mendez, in talking about not just his ability, but potential marketability. “There’s never been anyone like that yet.”

Sanchez doesn't impress me. Alves is a beat -- the only statement I said is that I don't believe he can beat GSP. Soku was overrated like Houston Alexander because of a couple of knockouts. He is different then Alexander in the fact that he trains with a good camp and works on his ground game, and will continue to get better. In the future he might be able to make an impact, but I would see that as a few years out (at least 3).

I didn't say I wasn't going to watch it. I didn't read it was free, so I was saying I wouldn't buy it. I watch all fights and pay for just about every single pay-per-view available.

I didn't say anything about the entertainment value of watching fighters that don't hold a belt, not sure where that came from. I only said I don't believe those fighters will be belt holders, which Evan said he stated incorrectly and meant contenders.

mmajunkie.comIf I was Dana I would hold the fight off till a PPV, but of course as I fan I want it free. With Anderson-Cote it would be a great card, without...it still has nice potential.

Thats a very good point but considering SpikeTV reportedly signed a $100 million dollar deal with the UFC I wonder if they expect one big time free PPV caliber card a year. Because otherwise that's a no brainer cash cow PPV.

The French website, fightsport.fr, is reporting that Fedor Emelianenko could end up facing former UFC heavyweight champion Andrei Arlovski at the next Affliction show. In the article, Fedor mentions that the next Affliction show is set for November, but he has asked to move the card up to October so he has time to train for a New Year's Eve fight with DREAM (possibly against Mirko Cro Cop). Fedor also mentions that he would like to face Josh Barnett in early-2009. Affliction won't make anything final until they figure out the contract status of Randy Couture.

A lightweight clash between Kurt “Batman” Pellegrino and Thiago Tavares will headline the preliminary portion of UFC 88, according to a new report on UFC.com.

UFC 88 will take place on Sept. 6 in Atlanta, GA at the Phillips Arena and will be headlined by a light heavyweight bout between Chuck Liddell and Rashad Evans.

Both Pellegrino and Tavares will be attempting to rebound from losses.

Pellegrino last competed in April, submitting to a triangle choke against Nate Diaz at UFC Fight Night 13. He is 3-3 lifetime in the UFC and 15-4 overall.

Despite being the favorite, Tavares was knocked out last month by Matt Wiman at UFC 85. The loss dropped Tavares’ career record in the UFC to 3-2.

Babalu is a badass, far advanced from Tito.

I don't believe this fight will happen until I see it officially announced though. Too big of a risk for Tito. Another loss is a disaster for Tito. Its been since 2006 since he had a legit win unless you buy into Ken Shamrock.

Doesn't make sense for him to take it right now and I can't imagine Tito will be easy to sign...he will probably want some crazy pay structure and I am not sure affliction can afford another Fedor'ish type pay out.

I can see them fighting eventually but it would seem like Tito would want a couple easier fights to get his name back up a bit.

Josh Gross of SI.com has a very interesting article about the health of Quinton "Rampage" Jackson up on the popular sports magazine's website right now. In the article it mentions that Jackson has fired longtime manager, trainer, and friend Juanito Ibarra. It also mentions that Jackson is out of psychiatric observation and is attending outpatient treatment daily and that the UFC is interested in having Jackson fight Wanderlei Silva in November depending on Jackson's health.

Check this out!

Graciefighter.com is reporting that EliteXC is very interested in putting a Nick Diaz/KJ Noons rematch on the October 4 EliteXC CBS show. Diaz is very interested in the fight, however it is unclear if KJ Noon's camp will accept the bout. If Noon's camp does not accept the fight it is very likely that Diaz could end up facing Hayato "Mach" Sakurai at the September DREAM event. In another interesting note, DREAM has yet to pay Diaz for his victory over Katsuya Inoue back in May.

I guess this is my own personal topic now!!!!!!!!...anyway I really like this fight, and this card is shaping up to be steller!

The latest bout added to UFC 90 on Oct. 25 is a middleweight bout between Brazilian Thales Leites and Croatian Goran Reljic, according to a report on MMAjunkie.com.

Leites had been rumored as scheduled to fight Dean Lister during UFC Fight Night 15 in September, but the match was scuttled after Lister reportedly pulled out of the fight.

Leites could become an eventual number one contender for the UFC middleweight title currently held by Anderson Silva, as he has won four consecutive fights in the UFC.

He has just one blemish on his 13-1 overall MMA record, having lost his UFC debut to Martin Kampmann during the live season finale for the fourth season of “The Ultimate Fighter.”

Since the loss, he has bounced back with wins over Pete Sell, Floyd Sword, Ryan Jensen, and his most recent win, a controversial split decision against Nathan Marquardt at UFC 85 this past June.

Reljic made his UFC debut at UFC 84 this past May as a light heavyweight. He upset Wilson Gouveia with a TKO at 3:15 of round 2 and improved his record to 8-0 in the process. Dropping down to 185 pounds, Reljic is someone who could possibly shake up the division.

UFC 90 will take place just outside of Chicago in Rosemont, Ill. and will emanate from the Allstate Arena. The card will be headlined by a UFC middleweight title defense by Silva, who is set to face challenger Patrick Cote. A welterweight bout between Diego Sanchez and Thiago Alves is expected to take place on the card as well.

Mauricio "Shogun" Rua recently sat down with Tatame.com and discussed a potential fight with Quinton "Rampage" Jackson at the UFC's December PPV currently scheduled for Dec. 27 in Las Vegas, Nevada:

"I'm back to training. I'm doing some Muay Thai and Jiu-Jitsu stuff, and thank God everything is fine now. I'll be back in December… They said that I might fight with Quinton Jackson, but nothing has been signed yet. They (UFC) called me ad offered a fight with him and I accepted, but they didn't say anything else more"

"(Rampage's recent mental health problems) surely can be a problem, but I want him back in December and against me, and I believe he can be back.

Ken Shamrock Vs Kimbo is up next for EXC. Who gives a flying eff?! Pathetic on EXC's part.

I hate Shamrock but i am begging for him to Beat Kimbo. He has no ground game whatsoever, Ken could probably submit him if he gets it down. However he won't be able too. Ken is as shot a fighter as could be anymore. Kimbo will likely KO him. I agree, "Who gives a shit about this fight" How do you even sell it?? So if Kimbo wins, he beat a old man, ex-ufc legend who is 1-7 in his last 8 fights. If he loses he is a bum, not legit. I think Kimbo showed the world he is not legit in his last fight but they will desperately try and sell him as the real deal still. It is funny how when he was getting beat down in his last fight the broadcasters were saying "Will the legend die in this fight" Legend?? What does that mean? Some guy who used to fight bums and hobo's on the streets and it got broadcast on youtube is a legend, Uhhh okay :rolleyes

bad news keeps on rolling...

According to the UFC website, Lyoto Machida has been removed entirely from the UFC 89 card. Shane Carwin's fight is now on the main card instead.

I haven't heard any estimates on how long Thiago Silva will be out, but this could be a blessing in disguise for Machida. Beating Thiago probably would not have put him into title contention, and he's now open to a face a number of different guys.

One name being thrown around is Mauricio "Shogun" Rua in December. Shogun would be an underdog in that fight, which would have been hard to believe back before their respective fights at UFC 76. It's hard to see how Shogun would beat Machida stylistically, but it makes for an intriguing fight.

Evan who do you think the type of guy is that will beat Lyoto?? His offense is so elusive and annoying to try and attack. Maybe someone like Wandy who has great strikes and is aggressive as all hell. I think Page could take him maybe but he better stay active in the fight and not let Lyoto get compfortable.

Let me preface this by saying I fault no one for not liking Lyoto even though I kid around when they do. Be it music, movies, politics, religion, women or fighting you can't argue taste as its useless and a waste of time.

With that said...

*puts on Lyoto underwear and combs hair*

He counters grappling, evades both punches and slow kicks...perfect example is the Tito fight. I am not sure aggressiveness would matter so much as he seems to be able to frustrate everyone as he chips away at them and out cardio's their oxygen blood count.

To me Lyoto is a perfect new breed of hybrid MMA fighter who is pretty damn good at everything and to his fault (IN THE EYES OF FANS) I think he is so well trained that he does nothing but listen to his coaching, follow the game plan and does not free style enough away from the game plan.

I think he would frustrate Wanderlei so much that it wouldn't go well for him.

I think the fighter that beats Lyoto will have fast long ranging leg strikes.

As I said in another thread..

No doubt he's a tough sell at this point in time but I think he will grow on people eventually. A KO or two will go a long way as we the mma fan are a emotional, fickle and reactionary breed much akin to the college football and soccer fan. If he wins his next fight he will get a title shot. He only has 13 fights he still has so much room to grow.

A couple ko's and people will forget he was "boring"

If you want to waste time you can find some old threads (2002 to 2005ish) in other forums where people complain that Fedor is boring because he has too many submissions. Someone on sherdog must have spent a week searching as he found about 40 of them on various sites about a year ago and posted them in one thread.

Now I am not saying Lyoto is the LHW Fedor...I'm just giving an example of perspective changing over time. This guys is only 30, 5 years into mma...13 fights...look at what he has done. Astounding.

Lets just give it time but mind you I believe the days are over for a long time where modern fighters will go on much of anything more than a 6 to 10 fight winning streak at high level orgs of fighting. Lyoto and Silva are due for a loss as the gap between these guys are so close right now which is nothing short of great for excitement but it would be nice to see some more stability. Minor complaint.

Wandy is aggressive enough and has a good enough chin that it could make for a great fight.

Rashad's fight was an example of this "style" that Machida has. You "elude" strikes to frustrate your opponent. In Rashad's case, it made Chuck more aggressive lowering his hands to try to get in that one "cocked" shot as he is coming forward, rather fight his style of countering.

Honestly, we can watch point karate matches to see quick strikers that are great at eluding and get their hits in. Machida is a point karate guy that has added in take down defense and some BJJ. If that's the "hybird MMA" that is going to take over MMA, put to it to sleep now. I have a group of friends that seems to grow all the time as MMA fans. At UFC 66, it was me and my brother-in-law. Last UFC? We had almost 20 people. Do you want to know how many like Machida? 2 People. That's only because they were into Karate. The rest think he is boring as hell and don't want to watch him. The boring label is there because he is boring. You know who else they don't like? Tim Sylvia. None of them knew who Fedor was, but they cheered like hell when he smashed Tim.

There's a reason why Houston Alexander garnered so much popularity, Wandy and number of others. People are wanting to watch people fight, aggressiveness is what makes people watch.

The argument I seem to read is that people believe that fans find him boring because they don't appreciate his game. I don't believe that to be true, because what I would see was people that found BJJ and wrestling boring. There are aspects when it used to stall and no action takes place, which does make it boring. Some people though, believed it was all "gay and boring" once it hit the ground. Now that people understand more of the game, they find it great. I mean people in the group knew what a whizzer was. They can see the moves coming and call out the subs before Rogan or Goldberg would call it. Now, this is strictly the ground game. On the feet, people understand what is going on, which is where Machida tries to keep the fight. Therefore, I don't understand how people wouldn't appreciate what he is doing. I'm sure they understand what he is doing, he is boring.

Machida is unpopular as "all get out."

Staying in lhw... Jardine?

Perfect example.I think Jardine would give him serious problems….pound away at those hamstrings…counter is how slow Jardine resets himself after a leg strike so there is that problem for Jardine as he will have a short window left open over and over again.

I just find such a guy fascinating to bring into the mix…anyone that creates so many problems helps the sport evolve..Sherk is a winner but his style is nothing new. He is what he is.

Personally, I'd like to see Machida fight Rampage Jackson. That is the true number one contender match at this point, and with Chuck Liddell out of the 205 title picture, it's much harder to keep Machida in title purgatory. Machida/Shogun is more like a Sherdog dream match and less of a match that will do much of anything for either guy.

advertising fail

Much was made a few weeks back when Affliction sponsored a race car in NASCAR to hype the Day Of Reckoning PPV. That seemed all well and good, until reader Joseph Miller brought something to our attention:

It just seems odd to me that Affliction would promote their event at a NASCAR race when the next Affliction event is scheduled for the same time as a NASCAR night race.

Glancing at the calendar does reveal a race that night, from Charlotte Motor Speedway. This event will be during the NASCAR Playoff round, being hosted in Charlotte which is one of their marquee markets, so swaying fans from the race will be a hard sell. Spending advertising dollars to advertise in a medium that will be competing against you seems to hint at poor planning, to put it kindly.

They are not paid fairly at all. GSP is one of the biggest MMA stars in the world and he makes something like 200 grand a fight, in a sold out arena, with ticket prices like that and a huge PPV audience. Chuck gets 500 grand nomatter what. For ihs star appeal and what he brings in that is painfully low. In his day Mike Tyson would make 15 mil fighting in front of a half filled arena broadcast on HBO. I read Dana White's cut of what he owns of the UFC is over 100 mil. The company is worth over a billion dollars. But guy's making 5-10 grand a fight is fair. Come on Evan.

You need to re-read what I wrote and take what I said in context.

Didn't Keith Jardine make like 20 grand for beating Chuck??

No, Keith said he made more than that. Thats just the base pay per fight. You should read some of these MMA biographies popping up from the fighters. You get a much better idea of what they make and HOW they make it. The simply cut and past stories on base pay are only a part of it.

Look up what Tito made his last fight and I will tell you what Tito said he makes in his book.

If you think the UFC is unable to pay them far more then they are, then i don't know what to tell ya. Re-read what i wrote for starters, the numbers of what the UFC is worth and pulls in each event compared to what they pay don't add up.

There have been countless fighters that have complained about the pay scale in the UFC, some of them got sent packing because of it. Most fighters who aren't stars, are hardly thrilled with their pay scale, i read that all the time. Basically the big stars, get sponsorship, a PPV cut, some fight bonuses, shit like that. Some of them start gyms and open schools, like Matt Serra. The middle of the row guys like Matt Hamiil don't get a whole lot. He just made 10 grand for losing to Franklin and on that MMA show on ESPN.com it was even a question that Kenny Florian addressed. He basically just said you have "Build your way up and your trainers understand you are not going to be making much until you hit the big time"

dbreiden83080

This is what War Machine just said before he got cut

"What else is an underpaid fighter supposed to do at the end of his career?" War Machine wrote in the posting. "Cash in his 401K? Collect social security? Start to work some [expletive] job for 10 bucks an hour? (This) [expletive] ain't boxing, and if you're not Chuck [Liddell] or Tito Ortiz, you don't get paid dick."

Now that is a little strong but you get the idea

Good Lord dude...I never said they make enough. Re-read what I wrote...I was saying what Tito said.

You have completely mistaken the context of what I said.

But moving on...those base scales are not true to what they make. That much I do know for sure. But to make it clear...do I think they make enough...I don't know. I really don't. I want these guys to make as much as possible but there is a reason why so many of these orgs are imploding. Maybe its because the orgs pay the fighters too much at times...I just don't know. MMA just isn't there yet. Its still in its infancy and it seems like everyone is having a hard time making a profit.

MMA as a whole is really the UFC. That is the way the gen public looks at it. These other organaizations are having a hard time because they don;t have the talent to really draw consistantly like the UFC can. With the TV deals, merchandising, PPV and live gate alone the UFC is a juggernut is all i am saying. It just seems to me like guys like Hammill have to rely on a big bonus coming his way because the UFC won't give him much more than a 10K base off his loss in a co-main event fight. And since a lot of fighters really complain about this i tend to side more with them than the company. I firmly believe that as long as the UFC is the only game in town, this will continue.

But it's safe to say they are not making enough when you compare it to boxing which is basically a dead sport yet, guys routinely make in the millions of dollars when half the people are watching that used too. More than enough fighters have complained about their pay to easily cite this as an issue.

Exactly...and not to sound like a broken record but if you read these bio's you get a much better idea how they make money but its still cloudy. Its nothing like what we see reported plus the UFC allows them to have those banners and ads on shorts which is a ton of income. Not every org lets you do that.

But it's safe to say they are not making enough when you compare it to boxing which is basically a dead sport yet, guys routinely make in the millions of dollars when half the people are watching that used too.

Boxing still gets so much more in advertising dollars and gates. Yet oddly not as much on PPV on average.

More than enough fighters have complained about their pay to easily cite this as an issue.

Not really...only a handful out of hundreds of fighters.

Boxing still gets so much more in advertising dollars and gates. Yet oddly not as much on PPV on average.

The other thing to note here is that undercard fighters, in boxing, usually make very little money, much like undercard fighters like War Machine. The guy is a nobody and expects big bucks. It isn't going to happen.

Even if UFC starts paying out more money, it isn't going to towards the fighters on the undercards. Yes, there will always be exceptions for some of the fighters on the undercards who know how to negotiate, but nothing will ever be drastic.

GSP may pack in crowds at Montreal, but he still isn't the biggest draw out there. I'm sure he'll get a bump in pay during his next contract/extension. He's becoming more and more popular.

Popularity has everything to do with pay, along with performance.

During an interview with Tatame.com, Vitor Belfort mentioned that he will be fighting at Affliction 2 in January and that he would even be interested in facing the #1 heavyweight fighter in the world, Fedor Emelianenko:

"My hand is getting better. I'm doing a lot of physical training and physiotherapy. I didn't care about the postponement, I wasn't going to fight anyway. I'll surely be back [at Affliction 2]. I spoke with Tom Atencio and what they decide is good for me, I'm ready to face anyone. If they want so, I can face Fedor (Emelianenko)"

I would think so.

Rich was saying after his fight with Hamill how he needs to dedicate himself to putting on more muscle to be competitive at 205. That he was fighting at only around 210 for that fight, way lower than most 205 fighters are coming in on fight night. So i'd expect Rich to stay put at 205. Unless the UFC is forcing him to go down for this fight which, they seem to love him so i would doubt that.

Wrestling Observer/Figure Four Online -- WWE, TNA, UFC and International Wrestling and MMA Headlines - Don't expect head-to-head PPV even with UFC announcement today

Don't expect head-to-head PPV even with UFC announcement today

By Dave Meltzer

Today's announcement of UFC 93 being added to the schedule on 1/17 from the O2 Arena in Dublin, Ireland, left a potential head-to-head showing on PPV, as well as more likely live competition between MMA and pro wrestling in the Dublin market.

The show, will be headlined by Rich Franklin vs. Dan Henderson. UFC sources have confirmed the fight will be at light heavyweight, with Henderson moving up a division and Franklin staying put. This means it is not a match where the winner would be in line for a match with Anderson Silva, who has beaten both men, who were considered by many as No. 2 and No. 3 as middleweights before Franklin moved up.

Also announced is the return of Maurcio "Shogun" Rua against Mark Coleman, who turns 44 before the match will take place. Coleman did defeat Rua in 2006 when Rua dislocated his elbow early in the match.

UFC also officially announced this as a PPV show and not a Spike special.

Affliction/Golden Boy had not announced a 1/17 date at the Honda Center in Anaheim for a combined MMA and boxing PPV show that would feature Fedor Emelianenko, but several key sources have confirmed that was the date they were looking for.

Promoter Tom Atencio indicated Affliction/Golden Boy would be looking at running a different date.

"It doesn't make sense to go head-to-head with them," he said. "People are going to be forced to make a choice. Either way, we both lose."

In what is purely a coincidence, the UFC show at this point is scheduled to go head-to-head in the Dublin market with a TNA house show that same day. It is possible TNA could move its show to the afternoon.

No but I am sure SpikeTV would be a go between UFC and TNA to protect the ratings.

SpikeTV has a lot to do with the UFC and TNA. SpikeTV Has a lot more control over TUF and UFC Fight Night cards than is publically known. That tidbit kind of leaked out when SpikeTV announced those two gusy from TUF 5 would fight on the card and had even chose what slot only to be swatted down by Dana once everyone threw a fit over it. Dana said something like "they set it up be we didn't want to go with it"

WOW

Taking that on short notice is rough for Kos. He can beat Alves though. He has to play it smart and not want to bang with him though. Sometime he gets away from his wrestling and just wants strike. He mixes it up and doesn't gas, he can win.

Why does everyone hate on KOS so much?? For such a talented guy he gets little love from the fans. He even makes fun of how un-popular he is.
