Anybody know why Serra vs. Hughes is so far off????

They are the coaches of TUF season 6 and are fighting on the finale.

Besides, the UFC has so many fighters this is part of the problem until they can get PRIDE straightened out. So many fighters will have huge gaps in fights now.

Excellent thread.

Note Cage Rage 22 will be free on www.proelite.com

SHOXC will be free
UFC 75 will possibly be free
WEC will be free

And of course all UFN nights are free. Plenty of opportunities for new people to check out what MMA is all about.

Also September 15th will be a EliteXC event but the details are sketchy right now. I will follow up with this.

Can somebody explain the rankings to me?

Why is Couture the #5 HW when he's the champ?

Why is Cro Cop ranked #3 and Gonzaga ranked #6 after Gonzaga knocked his ass out?

I don't get it.

Those rankings are from MMAWeekly and they're for worldwide MMA, not just the UFC. Many of the top Pride guys haven't fought since Dec/Jan, so they're somewhat left in limbo as far as rankings go. They're also based on the opinions of dozens of MMA "experts." There is no official ranking system...several sites do rankings. MMAWeekly is the most commonly referred to though...

When a nobody beats a guy that's been top 3 for years, he's not guaranteed to be ahead of that guy. It's based on your whole body of work, not just your last fight...

Randy Couture has had one recent fight at HW in the last few years...and his most recent HW fights before Sylvia (who sucks) didn't go too well. No way anybody can say he's the #1 HW in the world RIGHT NOW.

No kidding I thought Quinton Jackson was the champ in the LHW why is he # 2?

He's #2 behind Shogun, who is a Pride guy that should be making his UFC debut later this year. Shogun also destroyed Rampage like Rampage has never been destroyed (although Wanderlei Silva's 2 wins over him were pretty devastating too), so it'd be hard to rank him ahead of Shogun...

Rampage vs Shogun
http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x4t8b_mauricio-shogun-vs-quinton-rampage

Most "UFC fans" don't have a clue who Shogun is...

First off, those are not official rankings.Just one website.

The UFC is not the only MMA organization so rankings are very hard.

Couture just came out of retirement and previosuly fought at LHW. He has yet to defend his belt. How long you have had your belt and how many times you have defended it is a huge factor. Should Couture defend his belt against Gabriel he will probably be number 2. Fedor has held his belt for so long that he deserves his spot. But, should Randy win his next two and Fedor does not fight until 08 like rumor has it, I would argue Couture should be number 1 and Fedor 2 but that’s far down the road.

Same goes for Rampage, should he defend his first title fight against Dan Henderson (who holds two belts) he will be number one. I am assuming LEONARD got his ranking from mmaweekly.com who has Shogun number one, he would then go to #2.

These ranking will be a bit of a mess for a year while everything gets sorted from the PRIDE UFC merger.

I won by 2 min's... :p

If Rampage beats Hendo, I have no issue with him at #1...especially since Shogun hasn't been himself his last few fights. I'm still waiting for pre-dislocated-elbow Shogun to show up...

You're right though, rankings are a mess at this point. Rankings are pointless for the most part anyway unless they're official and used to determine title shots...but that'll always be Uncle Dana's call IMO.

Evan

What do you think about my comment about Fedor being #2?

Evan
07-13-2007, 03:29 PM
And by the way, Cro Cop is a MMA God who has fought 20 times more than Gabriel has. He has been around for quite some time and beaten the best. He simply for whatever reason throw out a clunker fight every 5 or so fights. Its just the way he is.

So thus the rankings...

Added:
-Luke Cummo vs TBA @ UFN 11

-Chuck Liddell vs Keith Jardine @ UFC 76

What do you think about my comment about Fedor being #2?

3 more wins from Randy and Fedor not doing much and I'd definitely be fine with Randy being #1.

Hopefully Randy beats Gonzaga and we get Randy vs Fedor for New Year's Eve, or early '08.

LEONARD

I hope you're right!! I have ZERO interest in it...I'd rather see him fight somebody like Thiago Silva (Wand's CB teammate). An undefeated up and coming fighter that we need to see more of...plus the UFC loves storylines. Wand Silva fighting Chuck to get revenge for beating up his teammate...lol...

Chuck said he'd like to fight in Sept AND Oct...Dana needs a headliner for 76, which Chuck vs Jardine could be. Chuck would most likely get through that fight with no issues, then fight Silva in Nov...

who would you pick in a franklin-machida rematch?

At LHW or MW???

I think Franklin is going to go on another tear. Some fighters need a loss to take it to another level.

I don't know...I think Franklin is highly over-rated due to his "tear" over these guys...

Ken Shamrock - seriously...it's Shamrock.
Evan Tanner - solid opponent, but was his head in it??
Nathan Quarry - seriously...
David Loiseau - everybody thought he was a huge threat, but now he's eeking out wins in Art of War and getting smacked by Joey V...maybe he was a tad bit over-rated too??

I bought into him too...he seemed unbeatable about a yr ago. I just don't see any way that he can beat Silva though...

Evan
07-17-2007, 09:14 AM
I possibly drank the cool-aid on Rich but for now I am sticking with him. His record is not a fluke I don't think. Its still only one bad loss.

LEONARD
07-17-2007, 12:16 PM
He's still a great fighter, I just don't think he's as good as the UFC has hyped him to be. I think he's been over-hyped because he's easy for fans to like...he's a good "face" for the UFC...

Leben not signing for the Swick fight at UFN 11??

Swick vs Jonathon Goulet at UFN 11...that'll be a murder...

Roger Huerta vs Alberto Crane added to UFC 74...

Could they make it any more obvious that they're trying to "build" Huerta into a big name with wins over nobody's?? No doubt it's smart business to try and build up another Mexican star, but it's annoying that he keeps fighting UFC newcomers when most of the top LW's in the world are just sitting doing nothing right now...

http://ufcjunkie.com/2007/07/17/report-roger-huerta-vs-alberto-crane-at-ufc-74/

I think Huerta is SEVERELY over-rated after his fight with Leonard Garcia. It was an entertaining fight, but it was a really a one-sided beating of Garcia. Him being on the cover os SI was probably random, either that or Dana White chose the picture to really get this star building process under way...

Look at who Huerta has fought in the UFC...

Win Jason Dent Decision (Unanimous) UFC 63 - 9/23/2006 (Dent was 12-7 making his UFC debut)
Win John Halverson TKO (Strikes) UFC 67 - 2/3/2007 1 0:19 (Halverson was 13-4 making his UFC debut)
Win Leonard Garcia Decision (Unanimous) UFC 69 - 4/7/2007 (Garcia was 9-1 making his UFC debut)
Win Douglas Evans TKO (Strikes) UFC - TUF 5 Finale 6/23/2007 2 3:30 (Evans was 5-0 making his UFC debut)

4 guys making their UFC debut. 2 took him to a decision. Evans put up a MUCH bigger fight than people expected...

How about testing Huerta with a PROVEN high level fighter for a change???

Where are all the Pride LW's?? Sakurai is the only one to come over after the purchase of Pride, and he's going to WW...

#1 LW: Takanori Gomi
2. Hayato Sakurai
3. Gilbert Melendez
4. Tatsuya Kawajiri
5. Shinya Aoki
6. Vitor "Shaolin" Ribeiro
7. Joachim Hansen
8. Sean Sherk
9. Mitsuhiro Ishida
10. Norifumi "Kid" Yamamoto

Gomi is going to K-1 it looks like...big loss there. Arguably the hardest hitting LW in the world? Why wouldn't Dana White want him? Who cares if he lost to Diaz...sign both and have the rematch in the UFC.

Where the fuck is Melendez?? American fans would LOVE his fighting style and he speaks perfect English...he's on American Top Team even.

Kamajiri, Aoki, Ishida?? Hansen is always exciting...why not sign him??

Ribero is with K-1...and I know Dana is working on Kid Yamamoto (who has been training in the US some)...

In conclusion, WHAT THE FUCK?? :madrun

Evan
07-18-2007, 09:02 AM
K-1 is going to take a lot of the LW's. I had Gomi leaving PRIDE last week and I am glad to see confirmation but it was the shakiest source I have ever linked. I have almost deleted it a few times.

Agree about Melendez

Agree about Huerta as well although I can't blame them I guess since he was the first on SI. I believe the picture was random from what I read.

Lutter didn't just screw up a PPV card he basically screwed up and entire season of TUF. How how how do you miss weight like that. 2 pounds? How!?

He would have to go on a streak of consecutive wins of about 7 Bruce Lee type knockouts of top tier talent before he gets another shot. The guys is now relegated to punching bag. He is only out of Danas dog house enough to appear on a card….under card.

Too be honest I am surprised he isn't UFN fodder now.

Forrest will scrap...no doubt. He'll have a slight size advantage but that's about it. Shogun is better than him at everything. His best chance is a cut stoppage or that a wild punch will land PERFECTLY...and that may not be enough. This punch from Lil Nog...

dropped him but didn't knock him out...and he actually came back to win the fight...

Forrest is with Xtreme Couture now, so you know he'll have a good gameglan and will be in great shape. It sounds like Shogun is training hard too though. If he was Shogun v2005 I'd actually feel bad for Forrest. We still haven't seen THAT Shogun since the dislocated elbow...

Why are all of the WEC cards on Vs network and not ppv? yeah im not a filho fan( or anyone else ahead of rich in the MWs) I know he will win but that should be a great card.

There is not a big enough "buying market" for it. Being on PPV is extremely expensive and even the UFC cannot afford to risk putting the WEC on PPV.

The WEC being free also helps to saturate the market and makes other channels less willing to invest money and / or risk the time slot for other MMA organizations to be aired. This is a big deal because not being on TV was basically the death blow to PRIDE.

The only info Tanner has on his website is about him and that boat. I guess he thinks he can pick up fighting whenever he wants.

First Tanner wanted his belt back and dissapeared on some sort of "spiritual" journey.
Then he wanted a hosue where he trained up and coming fighters that had problems and he stopped that after the first bad run in.

The he sells his house and will train full time again.

Now he is just messing with some old beat up boat.

He may fight again, but I don't think his heart is in it.

It's obvious Bj is good enough and will take it, but i dont think it's fair to just give him a title shot after he's lost 2 of his last 3 and 3 of his last 5. He beat a has-been Jens Pulver in his only recent LW bout. Its clear he should get a shot but IMO you should win in the weightclass(he has but not recently) before you get a title shot. Huerta? Dude...come on!! Huerta has fought nothing but UFC-newbs. He's proven nothing. They're protecting him and building him into their Hispanic poster-boy. Hopefully he gets choked out by Crane...

BJ isn't a true 170 lb fighter. He destroyed GSP before gas'ing. He was beating Hughes for 2 rds before popping a rib out (or gas'ing, whichever you believe). He lost to Machida at 205 lbs...and he beat Renzo. He showed what everybody needed to see against Pulver...that he's in shape and taking things seriously at 155 lbs. He's first in line for a title...has to be...

By Kevin Iole, Yahoo! Sports, Had the sport of mixed martial arts been around in 1966, the history of boxing may have taken a vastly different turn.

That's because two-time boxing heavyweight champion George Foreman said he would have chosen MMA instead of boxing had it been available to him.

Foreman, who in 1994 became the oldest man to win the heavyweight championship when as a 45-year-old he knocked out Michael Moorer in one of boxing's most memorable matches, said he is an MMA fan.

I don't think Rob could win, but what if Rob did win? What would happen to the WEC belt? Would he continue holding and defending both? Aside from that conundrum, it doesn't really make sense to move Rob over to the UFC. I don't see this fight happening. If they were going to send anyone over from WEC it should be Filho.

Edit: You could also tell from Mir's comments that Filho probably shouldn't be in the WEC -- sorry, slightly off topic.

UFC 76 is Hostile Territory, because it's in Ohio and Franklin is from there...ect. Matt Hamill is from Cinci too. How about a bisping-hamill rematch in Cinci? I don't know which to believe.. Trigg's show? I don't know if Mir is ready for Nog yet. Kongo doesn't have a good ground game and would allow Mir to try out a few things on the feet to see where he is at, because he should be able to dominate on the ground. As long he doesn't KO'd, he should win the Kongo fight. Now, the Nog fight is definitely more interesting -- two BJJ guys. I think Nog is better on the feet though.

I think Hero's slogan "Stop the UFC" has more to do with it than UFC not wanting to sign the other guys. Hero's is signing a ton of guys -- either outbidding or some other reason -- than UFC. I think Dana is making excuses when he isn't able to sign them. E.g., Kang went to Hero's, but was in talks with the UFC. Dana said he wasn't a big deal. I doubt the UFC didn't care to sign him, they just were going to pay what Hero's was.

About UFC 79: Joe Stevenson and BJ Penn will fight in Dec if Sherk is suspended, I think it came from both camps. It's prelim based on Sherk's hearing Oct. 31.

As fars as Sprawl's attempts, they look great.

Hughes/Serra
BJ Penn/Joe Stevenson
Wanderlei/Houston Alexander
Shogun/Nakamura (starting from scratch with Shogun)
Werdum/Cheick Kongo

Great card and great test for Houston, although like you said, I still think Chuck should have this fight if he isn't medically suspended. If Chuck is medically suspended, I'd give it a go.

Forrest/Rampage
Lyoto/Jardine
Chuck/Hendo
Mark Hunt (rumored to be on the verge of signing)/Arlovski - #1 contender
Gonzaga/[winner of Vera/Sylvia]

Should Forrest get the next title shot? It's hard to say yes to, but who should he fight next? A rematch between Jardine and Forrest for title contention could be good. I wouldn't disagree if he did get the title shot though. Lyoto/Jardine could be a good matchup and maybe give Lyoto his first exciting match. I think Hendo would own Chuck. AA and Hunt would be exciting, I think. GG v Vera/Sylvia winner would also be fun to watch.

Randy/Fedor [or Nogueira, or whatever they cobble together if he won't sign]
Brock Lesnar/Cro Cop
Fitch/[loser of Hughes/Serra]?

Randy vs Fedor I see and WOULD LOVE to see this fight. A brutal win by Fedor, or another bad Pride showing. However, I don't believe Nogueira should get an automatic title shot. Nog should have to go through Vera and Sylvia, but he might get it before his contract is up. Brock Lesnar / Cro Cop, I'm not interested in CC's fights anymore. I though Fitch should fight Karo and the winner of that gets the next shot at the title. Loser fights the Hughes/Serra loser.

The rest are dependent on winners and losers, etc.

I really don't see how he will stand a chance but who knows anymore.

There really isn't much left for Bodog after this.

Yer nuts.

Lindland is overrated but Prangley is a C class fighter. Nobody can beat the stench of Lindland beside Fedro.

Give Prangley a little more credit than that. He's much improved since he was in the UFC, IMO...

Not official right?

Not official...that's just what Hendo said when asked about him...

Why such the long break? He had an early edge for fighter of the year.

My guess....

He has a good agent that is trying to get him in leverage with the UFC, or get K-1 to pony up some more cash. :greedy :greedy

Long lay offs aren't good for these guys......

Especially one with so little experience like Sokoudjou

I can't find any Prangley fights for some reason, Evan... :wtf

The UFC offered Sokodjou $20k/fight...that's one big reason...

Prangley's last fight will be on ION this week...

BODOG FIGHT EPISODE TO FEATURE TITLE BOUT

The latest episode of Bodog Fight “New Jersey” will showcase the middleweight championship bout between veterans Trevor Prangley and Yuki Kondo at 11 PM EST/10 PM CST on ION Television in the United States and The Fight Network in Canada.

The 35-year-old Prangley (16-4) owns victories over UFC middleweight contender Travis Lutter, IFL middleweight contender Matt Horwich and Russian veteran Andrei Semenov. A product of the American Kickboxing Academy, Prangley has never been stopped in 20 career bouts.

Kondo (46-20-6), a veteran of 72 MMA bouts and former King of Pancrase, is a mediocre 4-7-1 in his last 12 bouts, though losses to both Dan Henderson and Wanderlei Silva are included in that stretch. He has spent much of his 11-year career in Japan inside the PRIDE and Pancrase promotions.

Ok so I saw Bodog last night...

Prangley Vs "Mr Stench"

Lindland will leg sweep him and sit in his half guard and hammer fist him until the second round.

Maybe I need to see more but I dunno.....
